He is a project of sorts. We are not really in the position to take him. He would be a good pick for the Steelers or Chiefs. He definitely needs more development. The hype is pretty crazy, and I don't believe him to be the best or 2nd best QB in the draft. However, his arm talent is probably the best in the class. People talking about him being a top 10 pick is pretty crazy. This is what I posted about him 1 month ago. I do believe that he is head and shoulder above all the guys on the list. He is easily the best QB, but the system is very concerning. He needs to land with the right team and needs to be reworked with his mechanics.
Thanks for that. I'll stick with my pick of Ryan Ramczyck for the Jets. I know guys don't think he is a top ten talent and I respect that, personally I believe he will be a pro bowl 10 year starter at LT for any team that drafts him.
Yeah I watched 5 games and every game he does this. You can't get away with doing that at the NFL level, defenders are too fast. His footwork is awful, he has a great arm but like I said that only gets you so far. We didn't even start talking about the system being designed to have pre-determined reads / snaps under center. He does this with a clean pocket, it's a little bit of the happy feet too. The kid has moxie, no doubt, he looks to be a gamer, but I won't take him at 6.
Technique wasn't really the reason Rodgers was supposedly struggling, in my opinion... his struggle was mostly myth oriented perpetuated by the media that failed to assign blame to Mccarthy's archaic offensive system and the Packers lack of talented Wide receivers at this point. Maybe he played two worse games than he would in a given year for his standards, but I just think his decline was overstated, but that's for another thread. Rodgers's footwork is not textbook from the typical standpoint. The inconsistent weight transfer/alignment of his feet can sometimes lead to him having ball placement issues in the short game, but overall works for him and that's matter. Also, yes, Cam Newton struggled with his footwork in the SB against playing against an all time great defense. Brady's feet were all out of whack playing them in that AFCG that year as well. That still doesn't change the fact that Cam was amazing throughout that season , despite having inconsistent lower body mechanics. There is certainly scenario where Mahomes's play and back yard style football gets him into ore trouble than good. I never denied that, but I could see him becoming one of those rare Quarterbacks, who makes that style work. It's a cop out on my part, but I don't know what else to say.
To add on: Despite "terrible" mechanics and footwork, these QBs were able to elevate their teams and get to the SB. I would certainly live with some bad mechanics - even some lost games due to them - in return to getting to the SB, and I believe both Mahomes and Watson offer that possibility, despite their "flaws".
I like him a lot. It is just with the big board the OL is not near the top. It would most definitely be a need over a BPA, which I am not against. The question is "would it be a reach?" That I am not sure of. At #10 it is ok, #6 idk. His NFL Draft Profile compares him to Joe Thomas... that is a great compliment.
Technique was why he dropped and sat for 3 seasons. It's also why he struggled last yr. Read this link. http://www.espn.com/blog/green-bay-...diagnosing-and-solving-aaron-rodgers-problems Bad footwork and tech bud. Mahomes cannot play at the next level with the footwork he has now.
Stafford had similar issues coming out of the college and is the pro comparison for Mahomes. How many playoff wins does Stafford have?
The Jets are going no where until they get that franchise QB. They have had one franchise QB and subsequently one SB appearance. Where are we going with Petty and Hack? Nowhere! Maybe were sign a FA like Cutler,,, or maybe Geno comes back, please no. Red , we do need to rebuild the OL badly but you can't take RR at 6.. You can trade down and pick up another asset and still get him in the teens. Martin pee wee program? They put up those numbers in the Big XII against OU, Baylor, UT, OSU, etc. Back when Kingsbury, Harrel, Symons, etc played. There was also A&M, Missouri and Nebraska in those early years. Of the QBs you listed, only Webb played in Kingsbury's system, all others played in Leach's system. Kingsbury's system utilizes the RB a lot more, and also gets the ball downfield more. Last year TT had a young inexperienced OL due to injuries and graduation, they also lost D. Washington to Oakland so RB was hurting. Most plays Mahomes had to scramble to survive. He posted unbelievable numbers considering that TT had the worst defense in D1 football. He had to constantly pass to keep TT in games. When passing he was running for his life. Unlike Watson, KIzer, he wasn't surrounded by 4 and 5 star talent. IN one of the earlier videos posted Mahomes talks about reading and making his progressions and dismissed this stating at times he had 4-5 reads he also had freedom to change the play at the line after reading defense. The earlier posts in this thread have an abundance of videos and interviews covering this and other topics of concern. Lets see how he comes out of the combine.. Many of the experts are starting to recognize the potential. He also will get broken down at the Gruden QB camp.
You can't blame Stafford. Its still a team game. Put Brady on those Lion teams and he probably would have retired already. Arguably Luck is one of the best QBs in the league and he looked like it a few years ago. Lately he is surrounded by crap and now he can't even remain healthy.
Leave it to the Jets to make life complicated They didn't let the kid play even during garbage time, the end of the Season Gut says he most probably a bust but this is all under wraps , top secret
Yes, of course, how can we know? But we do know this: Hack had only one successful season, and was so screwed up the Jets wouldn't even let him take practice time, let alone get into a game. Sure, maybe he'll surprise, and maybe the Jets know he's their FQB, but I highly doubt it. I'll still take Mahomes at 6.
He struggled primarily because his coach keeps running isolation concepts, when the Packers WR are not capable of winning on one consistently anymore. I Defenses adjusted and the Packers had no answer for that post week 6 last year. The windows were even tighter and messed with the rhythm of the offense. . And disagree with your last sentence. I'm not willing to make a blanket statement like that about Mahomes, but we can agree to disagree.
Nope. I do see they share some of the same traits / tendencies, but one football IQ wise was sharper. Remember, Stafford played in a pro offense in Georgia that sets him apart. Stafford, I look back easily one of the best arm talents I've seen in an NFL prospect. Mahomes shares that arm talent and inconsistent fundamentals [far worse footwork however]. Air Raid.
“It’s understandable why people would think I’m just another Air Raid guy, not ready for [the pros],” Mahomes told MMQB. “Quarterbacks who came from our system haven’t done well in the NFL; that’s a fact. “At the combine, I am going to show NFL teams that I am ready to play Day 1. Everyone knows I can make the throws, but I’m smarter than people think. I know these NFL concepts. I’m not a project.” -Pat Mahomes II (a.k.a 2PM)
