My post was based on the assumption - maybe too optimistically - that they would certainly improve the OL, and give whoever the QB is some weapons to work with. I agree with your POV if this won't be the case.
The problem with your approach is that this isn't the draft to do that. The Jets big needs are at both tackle positions. We know there are no certain starters at LT in this draft aside from maybe Ramczyk. Shell may take care of the need at RT, but he may not. With Mangold gone, there is a need at C as well, but as far as I've been able to tell, there are some good centers and some depth at that position in the draft, but no great centers. Carpenter is very good at LG, and Winters has been steadily improving and the Jets just re-signed him, so they're not gonna look to replace him in the starting lineup. They'll probably re-sign Ijalana, and have Qvale, so will have decent depth at OT. Other than depth at OG (which is a definite need), and a C to compete with Wesley Johnson, there really isn't a lot the Jets can or should do in this draft to "overload on offensive line." IMO that would be a waste of draft picks and would not help the team at all. The Jets have plenty of needs that should be addressed in this year's draft. It would be criminal wasting their picks on players at positions that will have little or no impact upon the team's play.
I see your point but I see no way Mac doesn't draft a tackle in the mid rounds.... Actually I would bet he picks one up with our extra 3rd.
I can't see their bringing Sanchez back. That ship has sailed, and he should not be brought back under ANY circumstances imo. I'd rather play Powell at QB or sign a poster from this forum than play Sanchez.
Thats likely 90% of the fanbase, so your likely right. But for me, I'd rather have Sanchez than Geno. At least he's been to a few championship games and was a mentor to Dax in Dallas.
You may be right, but I'm not so sure. If they fail to sign a FA LT I agree that they definitely will draft an LT prospect. If they think a player in the draft could or definitely would upgrade Ijalana or Qvale and has starting potential, they probably would as well. If they sign a FA LT and re-sign Ijalana, and either draft or sign a FA OG, with all their other needs, I think they may stand pat on the OL. One LT I could see them drafting in the 3rd round (if he's there) is Garcia. In fact if he is, I hope they will take him. As it is, they're not gonna be able to address all their needs this year. Aside from QB and LT, hey have a huge need at OLB, CB, TE and RB. If they cut Gilchrist (which imo they should), they'll have a huge need at FS. If they cut Harris, they'll have a huge need at ILB as well. Even if they don't cut him, they need to get a young ILB to groom this year to replace Harris next year. If they cut or trade B. Marshall or if Decker isn't healthy, they may need a WR. While the need is there on the OL, sadly, it just isn't a very good draft for OL, while it is a very good draft at CB, OLB, TE and RB, and is pretty good at FS and ILB. IMO they need to draft to the strength of the draft, and get the best players they can, not just draft out of need and wind up with inferior players/depth.
Yep, draft based on the strength of the class. Get as closed to sure fire football players as they can. Minimize the projects.
I agree with you regarding getting players who can be most effective rather than draft for need regardless of skill. I think this off season will be fascinating. It may not be what some want to see and some of it may be down right disappointing but to see a true rebuild and see how macs vision comes into play will be very interesting. If not better the 2017 New York Jets will not be anything close to what the '16 was. For better or for worse.
Where are they going to get a FA LT? I hear from the Francesa show (for what it's worth) that there are very few good LT's in FA. The best one who may be available is Whitworth from Cinn., but he's 36. If the Jets aren't going to draft a QB who can start, then maybe they should try to load up on RB, WR, TE talent. Great RB's can flourish even if the O line isn't stellar. Fournette and Cook have that potential. That should make life easier for whomever is under center.
It won't be easy, but they have to try. The pickings are slim. Whitworth is indeed the best FA LT available. He still graded out last season as one of the top 2-3 LTs, and may have been #1. I forget. I'd be shocked if he would sign with us. I'd take him for a year or two in a NY minute, however. Reiff is another possibility. Perhaps the best possibility is the Beachum guy from Jacksonville. The Jets had him in last season for a look. Supposedly, he's a good pass blocker, but not that great a run blocker (shades of Brick). I think he's 27 or 28, maybe only 26. I'd take him for a year or two, longer if need be to get him.
Sanchez never recovered - physically, emotionally, or mentally - from his time here. He's toast - crumble him and toss him to the birds.
Good news! Sort of: http://nypost.com/2017/02/28/the-redskins-kirk-cousins-indecision-is-getting-ridiculous/ With the exclusive franchise tag he can only be traded, he can't be simply signed, so that takes this bad temptation away from the Jets. Of course they could still put together a blockbuster package to get Washington to trade him to them, but that wold be SO monumentally stupid, I don't even think the Jets could be THAT dumb. Then again...
The Redskins should let Cousins test the market and then decide if he's a competitive advantage off of what that turns up. He's no way no how a competitive advantage with a cap figure approaching $24M. He's probably not a competitive advantage at half that.
Me neither and I live in the DMV (DC, MD & VA). I hear what everyone says on the radio and social circles. He's going to want a fortune and he's not worth it.
No one has taken into account the injuries , suspensions and distractions that Dallas had to deal with in that 4-12 season. Even with Dak and Zeke, the cowboys had way too many injuries at key positions to be successful .
So with Revis and Mangold cut, the rebuild is on and in my mind it means the Jets wont be bringing in an older vet like Cutler or Romo. They may chase after Cousins or even Glennon, but I think it most likely they roll with Petty/Hack and will draft a QB in the mid rounds. They may get lucky and have Watson or Mahones available in the 2nd/3rd or they may look at a developmental prospect like Davis Webb or Nate Peterman in the 4-6th rounds.
