If Mac feels the same way about Hack as you do, then they need to ensure he gets all of the reps in the OTAs and TC. Getting younger is the only way to escape this abyss the Jets are in. There will be plenty of growing pains early on, and you have to hope the CS stays with the plan, but it could really work out in the end. NO MORE BRIDGE QB BS, but maybe you sign a McCown for 3M as insurance of injury.

Unfortunately, Morton will not have any opportunity to work with, or evaluate Hack prior to the draft. Off season workouts begin 10 days prior to the draft and only strength and conditioning or rehab is allowed. No drills, individual instruction,or separates are allowed so there is not alot for Morton to evaluate.
That's one major issue with coaching staff turnover that is overlooked.

He covered his bets. Carr was the 4th pick in the 2nd round.

What's "silly" is taking a guy with a high pick, knowing he has MAJOR flaws, and then declaring that you're not even going to address them until after the season!

And what's stopping Hackenberg from working on his footwork and mechanics in practice?

Macc has provided NO basis for having made Hack his 2nd round pick, and is thus open to questions about his ability to judge talent - especially QB talent. Could he prove me and the doubters wrong? Sure. But until he starts showing some evidence to the contrary, I'm going to remain skeptical.

I'm of the the camp that favors getting my FQB in place and building the team around him.

I disagree. When were they going to work on them during the season? They have game plans to install, new plays to teach. Hack had to learn the offense, adjust to the speed of the NFL, try to develop some chemistry and timing with the receivers. One cannot do the focused work on fundamentals/technique while one is doing those other things. THAT's what stopped him from working on those things in practice. In addition, when working on those things one needs an objective outside eye watching to make sure that the poor fundamentals aren't being replaced with just another sloppy fundamental, but getting the correct fundamentals. After a while he would have been able to work on them on his own, but in the beginning he would have needed the QB Coach to spend a lot of time with him.

Be skeptical all you want, but your statement that Mac has provided "NO basis for having made Hack his 2nd round pick" is silly and more than a little arrogant. Mac doesn't have to provide or prove anything to you, me or any other fan. He knows what he's doing more than we do.

There were 3 other QBs on the roster.

I don't think I'm the one with an "arrogance" problem. If you go and reread your posts just in this thread you'll get a clue who might have one though.

And in one sense, you're right, Macc doesn't get his paycheck from me, so no he doesn't have a direct mandate to prove anything to me. But as a member of the fan base, yeah he does have to prove himself. Ask Idzik about that.

Are scrimmage reps the only way you can improve footwork and mechanics?

I say bring that Barn Door down to the field at Met Life. Now if if Hack hits it throwing a football we got it made in the shade pardner...

After that take him down to the Jersey Shore and see if he passes the body of water test

I personally believe getting practice reps against a defense is the best way to improve footwork and mechanics. At the same time, it creates chemistry with other players and the QB learns the system. There's no negative in terms of letting a young QB get those reps, you won't ruin him. It wasn't until Geno was on IR that Hack finally got reps with the scout team, which is still bottom of the barrel reps. I don't believe in just "going through the motions" on the sidelines because if the QB is under pressure in practice or a real game, the QB will then revert back to old habits.

EDIT to add - If the Jets did this last season, the Jets would have more of an answer on Hackenberg and also you have something more to build on going into the next season.

Bingo. No one is preventing him from putting in the work on his own time. I think one of the big problems as Jets fans is we are so starved for a franchise QB that we tend to overly protect and sometimes make up an inordinate amount of excuses for QB's on our roster just because we're so desperate that they'll pan out one day. Even if those QB's are highly questionable and have fatal flaws in their game.

Most good-great NFL QB's usually just go out there and produce and don't need the ridiculous amount of hand holding that lesser prospects need. That may work at the college and HS level but this is the pros we're talking about. Results oriented business.

Of course practice reps with a team around you and in front of you is the only way to eventually become ready to play in a real game. But you can certainly do training and other non-scrimmage exercises to improve shortcomings. And frankly, if I invested a 2nd round pick in a guy I would be paying some attention to him, and not just letting him do nothing.

Maybe it's that I'm from the school of "Throw the guy in there and see what he has" if I think a guy really has talent. If Romo hadn't been hurt, it's likely that Dallas would never have found out how good Prescott is. And it's not like we had a Romo at the top of the depth chart. I'm not saying that Hack should've been made the starter, but he sure should have been tested and given more experience than he was given. At least then we would have some clue of his potential.

Absolutely, the QB can definitely do things on their own time, but it's best to play a defense in practice, find out what you need to improve on, you have notes from practices and such you can evaluate your performance much better and critique what needs to really improve. Dak got every single first team rep in OTAs / TC. However with Hack, I think you saw a lot more standing around and throwing the football around practicing his mechanics then what you would normally see from a QB drafted in the 2nd round.

When you have 4 QBs on the roster, the least experienced / more green QB will more than likely get the bottom of the barrel reps and could ultimately stunt the growth of a QB. He shouldn't have been made the starter, but getting team reps would've been very beneficiary for him.

From every indication, Hack has been working on things on his own. He's a highly motivated individual. He worked with a QB guru last year before the draft, and I believe was going to again this offseason. I'm certain that he did work on things on his own as much as he could during the season.

you can disagree all you want, but at the end of the day the Jets babied the hell out of Hack. He could've been farther along if he did what I mentioned when they first drafted him.

No, he wouldn't. He would have made zero progress if he did things your way. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Hackenberg could not realistically work on his mechanics during the season as he was pretty much a 4th string QB at one point, and was not until late in the season where he was elevated to 3rd. The reality is doing scout team reps isn't actually working on your mechanics. A player has to work on mechanics in the offseason, mini camp, at latest training camp. Within the season, its all about game preparation, film study, etc.

Macc and Bowles did not want Hack to play last season. Its pretty evident, now if we don't see some semblance of improvement, more exposure to actual game time, etc for Hack then it may become legitimate to actually question Macc, and also question how they've handled the QB position as a whole during his tenure. I think many will completely agree that picking Hack in the 2nd was probably a reach, but I think people writing him off as a wasted pick, bust, etc. is extremely premature and shortsighted IMO.

We have not seen the kid play a meaningful snap and we are writing him off. I just think its completely unjustified. Most QB's dont come into NFL being able to perform at a high level because college ball is different than the NFL in a variety of ways. And each QB prospect has circumstances surrounding their transition to the NFL that either benefit or prohibit growth. In Hack's case he was told to change his mechanics and was expected to transform himself into a QB to operate a non-pro style offense under James Franklin.

As for Hack working on his mechanics on his own time, Hack indicated at seasons end with the media, that just like before the draft, he will be working with Carson Palmers brother on his mechanics this offseason.

I fully expect Hack to be competing for the starting job this year, only exception to that would be if Jets sign a Cutler, Romo, Taylor, Glennon kind of player.

Actually he would, you have no QB examples or empirical evidence that suggests practice reps ruins a young QB with mechanic issues.

And I don't need you to send me a 2 or 3 paragraph PM trying to tell me what I know and what I don't know.
