How many great pass rushing OLB's get to FA? None. So we're talking signing somewhere between an Eric Barton and a Calvin Pace and we've done that already to no great effect. Yeah, they had big cap numbers like a pass rushing OLB is supposed too but they were ok pass rushing OLB's not great ones and so we limited our upside when we signed them, even though they were still fairly young.
We have an irreconcilable difference of opinion apparently. I ABSOLUTELY believe that either Mahomes or Watson are FQBs. Aside from that, why oh why do you have such bias for "D"? Of the two units, the Jets "O" is certainly in worse shape, and therefore would gain the most by adding an impact player. And despite all the so-called "conventional wisdom", an elite RB - even in today's passing oriented offenses - will still make a bigger impact than any player on "D" with possible exception of an elite pass rusher.
I think the big passing plays were due more to lack of QB pressure, although the secondary wasn't very good either. What I'm saying is that IMO getting an elite pass rusher fixes both problems.
OK, thanks for the clarification. I can get on board with this post. Yes, Petty could be partly to blame as could Gailey for not giving Petty better game plans to work with. I know the first game or two Petty played Gailey didn't give him any chance to succeed. I agree that the coaching may not have been the best on the OL. Again, I think Bowles is mostly to blame for the dumb penalties. He just seems to accept sloppy play and doesn't hold players accountable, just like Rex. That's what you get from "player's" coaches, however. I've been saying for years that we need a disciplinarian that will demand perfection, not accept losing, and will hold players accountable....the type who if the players won't put their own faces in the fan for the HC, then the HC will hold their faces in the fan. Yes, I agree that if the Jets aren't that high on Petty's future and think they can get someone better, then they should. That said, I know I don't trust Bowles to make that decision, am not sure about Mac, and even less sure about Morton and the new QB Coach (whose name I can never seem to recall LOL).
I'll bet that some here can't Handel those puns. With puns like that, you two ought to go into Haydn.
Sigh. I wish some of you would quit trying to twist my words or make them read as saying something I didn't say. Where did I say anything about "great" pass rushing OLBs? The answer is nowhere. I said "pass rushing OLBs." Even an average or slightly above average pass rushing OLB would be better than what we currently have. I just said that was the only position that I think merits a big dollar FA contract, I didn't say that I'd be willing to sign a big name, big contract "great" pass rushing OLB. In general, I don't believe in signing big name FAs except in very limited situations. One, is like we have now where the Jets don't have a starting-quality LT on the roster, and the draft is not likely to provide one this year. Two, is if the team is already a playoff team, but is weak at one position and by signing a proven vet at that position, can quite possibly get them over the hump and to the SB. If a team drafts well, it shouldn't have to be "desperate" and look to sign big name FAs, it would probably only need to sign some depth-type players and STs players. Would I give a HUGE contract to Melvin Ingram or Nick Perry of the Packers? NO. If they were willing to sign a reasonable, incentive-laden deal I might sign them.
Why can't the Jets have both? Also, it's a combination of the 2 in my opinion. No talented players in the secondary and no speed on the edge to get to the QB to compliment the interior rush. One can't work without the other. While the Jets do not need a star cornerback, I would really like for him to grab a safety that can really help eliminate the big plays down the field
I agree completely ,. He makes some very valid points but I also know his M.O. and where he tends to go after making a valid post. My comments to him were in regards to future comments. He has a history on other boards where anything besides a polite reply equal banning. It's a shame because he is actually a nice guy for a Pat's fan....
Then what do you susuggest? Cause that's exactly what every NFL team does while trying to find their franchise qb. There have been exactly 2 qbs in the past 25 years to win the super bowl who wouldn't be considered a franchise qb. Its almost impossible. Better to be competitive and get lucky in the playoffs IMO then tank and hope to hit paydirt.
It may be what most NFL teams do, but no one ever accused NFL teams of creative, outside-the-box thinking. It's not known as a copycat league for nothing. The odds of ever getting over the hump and finding that franchise QB when one is always trying to be competitive are nil. It dooms one's team to mediocrity, to being just good enough to make it into the playoffs and getting bounced the first game. One's draft position then is always at the bottom of the draft, and you almost never get the QB or other impact/difference-making players who might get you over the top. One of the definitions of insanity is to keep doing things that don't work the same way one has done them before, and expecting a different outcome. The reality is that this team has little depth and a TON of holes. The reality is that they appear to have a HC who is in over his head, who can't manage the game or the clock, can't motivate players and get them ready for games, and who doesn't hold players accountable. The reality is that they have a DC who sucks and a ST Coordinator who probably sucks as well, although in fairness, it could be as much or more a problem with talent. IMO the only sane thing to do under the circumstances is to commit to an almost total rebuild and commit to a youth movement. They need to accept the fact that they're probably going to suck for a year or two while the youngsters develop. I'd cut almost every older vet (maybe keeping Mangold and/or Harris with renegotiated deals), go with Hack and Petty and either a cheap vet QB or a middle or lower round draft pick at QB. In FA, I'd look to address needs with younger, cheaper players who would increase competition across the board. I wouldn't feel like I had to spend every dollar this year. In fact, I'd look to roll some over to next year. I'd look to improve depth. The only position I'd spend any big money on at all is in trying to sign a stop gap LT. Ijalana is not a starter. If I could sign Beachum, I would. If not, I'd shoot for Whitworth or Reiff. I'd tell Bowles if he wanted to win to save his job that he needed to do a good job of developing players, holding them accountable and making sure that they were prepared and ready to play each and every week.
I get that and I agree that its a viable strategy, just not one I would particularly follow. Fact is some people on this board could've put this team in a better position to with this organization. They could have drafted Carr or Cousins or Bridgewater or Prescott or Wilson. Instead we had Geno and Fitzpatrick. I also agree about this HC. He is not a winner and has already proven that he can't handle a locker room.
With the 18 pick in 2014 the Jets would have taken Teddy Bridgewater if they were taking a QB. Wouldn't have helped us at all except in terms of getting rid of Geno a year early and never signing Fitzpatrick. Any of the three guys we had a realistic shot at could have been the guy or an overwhelming bust or just not been up to the physical requirements of the NFL. It turns out there was one in each category available at the 18 and no way to tell who was who.
I can understand not wanting to go with my strategy. Long time fans of the Jets have seen enough lousy football to last two or three lifetimes. I want to win a SB, however, not just be competitive. As things currently stand, imo, the Jets will never win another SB. I would have drafted Bridgewater or Carr, but that's water under the bridge. With our current HC not being a winner and unable to handle the locker room, what's the point of spending a bunch of money in FA to try to win? Cutler would be an unmitigated nightmare here with Bowles. He might throw 8 interceptions in a game. The young players might not develop under Bowles and might develop some bad habits/attitudes, but hopefully, they won't get too damaged in one season (or one more season in the case of those who were added last year). At least in that scenario the Jets finally would have some young talent upon which they could build and to give some reasonable hope for the future. If they just load up again with a bunch of older, expensive FAs, they're still not gonna win, they'll be in cap trouble down the road, and the cupboard will really be bare in another year or two. IMO if they're gonna do that, they might as well just go ahead and fold the franchise or invite all Jets fans to a free rally and then poison us all. That would be kinder.
OK, I think we're back on the same page again. It just may be that opportunity does not present itself, in which case, I will be pulling for Petty 100% if the Jets decide to go with him. I would just quibble about "player's coach" vs. disciplinarian. I don't think one style is inherently better than the other. Both styles have won championships.
