Situation: You are GM for the Jets coming off of a 5-11 season in 2016 and a 10-6 season in 2015 in which you were named Executive of the Year. Surely you have some job security? Wrong! Take a look at what happened to your predecessor. Another 5-11/6-10 season in this town and you very well could be shown the door along with Todd Bowles. Given the fact that you dont have much of a pedigree its likely that you wont get another shot at an NFL GM gig. So what do you do? If it's me I am doing everything possible to win next year: 1) Spend like a drunken sailor in free agency 2) Bring in a veteran QB like Cutler or Glennon 3) Spend my first round pick on one of the stud RB's Who cares if those aren't the best decisions long term for the franchise? Why should I leave a good situation for next GM so he can win Executive of the Year and make me look bad?
I'd take some of that money I made last year, get a nice fancy hotel room for the weekend. Call up some hookers and get like an ounce on coke and some weed, probably a little heroin. Wouldn't want to come down to hard, ya know? Oh damn, you know those huge pixie sticks we used to get when we were kids? Fill that bitch up with coke and see how much I can blow up a hookers ass. If she dies, whatever, there's a couple more up here. Spend a few hours getting all American Psycho and ruining all the furniture. Take a shit in the sink, cut up that dead hooker in the tub, wrap the pieces in plastic and dump them around the city in different areas. Probably take a nap back at home so I can get into work early on Monday and work on that draft big board. Maybe trade down in the first for a couple extra picks and hope for the best.
Quite frankly, I'm really not sure what he should do going forward? To me there are so many needs that one could make a case for going in any different direction. However, with that said, the fact is Mac put himself in this position. Now I do think there was at least one thing going against him. That is, he had no control over hiring the Head Coach. And truthfully, that is a major disadvantage. But I do ask openly, "Does anyone know who Mac would have hired had he been given the opportunity? Whoever that may have been, would they have turned out any better than Toilet?". The fact is, no one knows the answers to those questions and we may never know. Mac put himself in this position. He agreed to take on the task of GM, knowing that HC had already been hired. He also knew that the HC would not be answering to him. Those are facts that he knew ahead of time and yet he still took the job on. So I have no sympathy for him in his career in NY. If the job was that bad and held him to a certain disadvantage, maybe he should have taken another job or stayed in Houston? I also think that Mac has been attentive to Toilets desires in the way of players? I personally believe Mac picked Darron Lee based on what Toilet had to say? I think Toilet let Mac know that he could use a guy like Lee based on his personal success with smallish type Safety/linebackers in AZ? So he decided to fulfill Toilets desire when really he wanted to select an OL. I believe it even more so when I see that Mac attempted to trade up and grab Laremy Tunsil? I'll bet truth be told now, that Mac wishes he had just made the trade to get Laremy Tunsil? But once there's no time for Mac to complain about the situation he put himself in and now? He has a huge hill to climb to: 1) Show major progress in the way of winning in 2017. The fans and Woody I am sure are reaching the end of their rope in regards to losing. This fan base has not enjoyed a playoff game since 2011. 2) Continue getting better. This isn't just about 2017. If the Jets suffer through another say 5-11 season in 2018? Even if the Jets made the playoffs in 2017 (they won't, but if they did), Mac would likely still get fired. The majority of jets fans are very depressed right now. They don't have confidence that the product will get any better in 2017. They feel as though watching a game in 2017 will be even more painful and unentertaining than 2016. Those are facts that Mac is going to have to come to grips with and all the pressure is on him to change virtually in one offseason. JMO.
enough with Glennon. How many backup QBs go on to become talented starters? Take Watson or fill other holes and address QB in the draft next year.
Macc needs to have a slam dunk draft that has 2-3 immediate impact players. He also needs to hope Hackenberg amounts to anything, and Devin Smith needs to be actually be something other than a bench warmer. Now, things can look very different if we sign a veteran QB like a Cutler, which would then allow Hackenberg to sit. But then the question arises, do you invest a high pick in QB? That would inadvertently signal that Macc does not know how to draft QB's as he would have then wasted a 2nd round pick on a QB. He also needs to be wise in how he approaches free agency, Melvin Ingram would be a slam dunk pick up IMO
Many people said " what GM in his right mind would take this job under these circumstances " or" who would want and be able to do this job " at least I did. Now we are stuck with LAME DUCK Todd and most likely Mac for 1 more year. Maybe Mac gets to hire his OWN COACH after 2017 and that buys him 2 more years ? No way Bowles survives he will be lucky to make halloween ,I honestly do not know what Mac does right now, I mean say by some act of god the team does better than expected next year and wins 8 games are we supposed to be happy with that as we are expecting much worse ? Again I stray from the topic . I have no idea what Mac can do to get this team competitive as we are a sieve and have so many holes ! Again being handicapped with Clueless Todd is a big hill to overcome but Mac does not get a free pass and he knew this coming in. If they try to go young and rebuild they set themselves up for failure and firings as Woody, the media, and much of the fanbase will not stand for a rebuild and bad year although MANY of us on this site would. I think he is on borrowed time along with the coach, unless Mac pulls a rabbit out of his ass via FA and the draft , I think its over for him .
u guys are funny......we must remember that our GM and coach were escorted here by so called consultants because the owner and president do not have enough skin in the game, so to say. Could u imagine the steelers or giants using consultants to find a coach/GM? anyway - a repeat 5-11 won't get these guys fired, IMO. Only a complete wash out, at least as bad as kotite, will do it. do they have 3 or 4 year contracts??
So that begs the question, what does Todd Bowles need to accomplish this coming year to keep his job? I don't see another 5-11 season sitting well with ownership and I know the fans and media in NYC will go ape shit over this..
If I'm Mac..I'm using Free agency to address the back end & LT. At minimum 2 DBs(2 corners & 1 safety are the prime spots) & at LT...I'm more concerned with depth than so trying to force my cap space out the door on a 2nd rate player. Beachem would make alot of sense. The DB's I target do not need to be shut down..they just need to be respectable from a speed/movement perspective, cohesive with the rest of the unit, and actually be able to tackle. 26 or younger. For the draft...I'm targeting a QB in round 1 & I'm pulling a Jimmy Johnson. Whoever that QB is...I'm finding the exact spot where I should be selecting him...which hopefully implores the need for a trade down.I stockpile as much picks as I can..in a draft this strong there will absolutely be teams looking to hop around..I then take the highest graded player(Minus DL) at every spot for the rest of the draft. At the minimum I'm improving the overall talent base of the roster...if everything goes well..I've also filled a reasonable number of holes & improved the overall depth. The QB selection just makes sense on so many levels. It's the most obvious spot to start a rebuild & more specifically for this franchise. It may end up buying the regime some time as the given QB will obviously need some time to develop. It also gives everyone involved a clue on the identity of the team & what complimentary pieces can be added that fit the team. Let next year's draft be next year's draft when it comes to selecting a QB. If the prospects are really that good...and our rookie QB from just a year prior was that unpromising...that should work itself out wen the time is right.
The problem isn't even the 5-11 season, if we went out there every week and played hard as hell every down of every game I don't think a lot of posters would have such a negative attitude towards the season. When I see players giving up, taking downs off, late for meetings, etc... I get frustrated. We don't feel like we are building towards anything because it looks like the players don't really give a shit. How much of that is Bowles and how much of that is player personality, I don't know. I do know that day one of training camp, Bowles needs to have answers to that question for himself if he wants to have a job. How much did losing Snacks as a leader hurt our defense? From my perspective a lot. I know Mangold is getting old but he's a leader and we need leaders on this team. Don't forget that he was the guy calling the protection for Geno because he can't read a defense, something we absolutely need if we plan on trotting out Petty, Hack or if we use the 1st round pick on a QB. Bowles and Mac need to establish the right attitude for the coming season. If a player isn't going to be giving 100% every play, trade then for what you can get, if it's only a third round pick, take it. Having a team of solid players who give their all is better than having a few guys who are top 10 when they feel like playing.
If you're Mike Maccagnan this year you're looking to get the most long-term talent on the team that you can - and you're doing that from a draft perspective. If you go the other way and sign prime-time free agents and then the team collapses in 2017 you are so out on your ass at the end of the season. Bowles is already about an 80% casualty because he lost control of the locker room last year and players started acting out in the locker room and on the field and so he doesn't have many outs if something goes wrong this year. Maccagnan stil has a chance to avoid the blowout at the end of the year but that requires him to actually improve the team and have the future be looking brighter at the end of 2017 than it did coming in. Not a little bit brighter, a lot brighter.
