Sheldon is basically gone, but he would have fit the 3-T position almost as good as Sapp. Mo would have been terrible to maximize, but I'd like to see him at NT in a speed-based 4-3. He's just not an edge rusher.

Unfortunately, he's the perfect 3-4 end as far as skills go. He's not a good fit in the 4-3. He would have been a no-brainer trade if the Jets were changing philosophy.

Your last sentence is ridiculous. Snacks is a one-dimensional 2-down NT. Mo put up 10 sacks in 2015. He was injured and struggled this past season, but unless his attitudes issues are a lot worse than has been reported, he is a much more dynamic and valuable player than Snacks.

I agree. Force them to make the mistakes throughout the length of the field. That's where the front four pressure D comes into play.

How many players do the Jets have right now on the DL that have a natural position in a 4-3 defense that is not 3T? Offhand I can't think of any.

That's way easier said than done.

I don't think you will ever see the Jets not have a Blitzing scheme until Brady retires because, as well all know, he can only get beat if he gets rattled.

He doesn't get beat or rattled by blitzing defenses though especially after we beat them in 2010. They run those quick hitting crossing and option routes with their Edelman/Hogan type of receivers.

You need to get front four pressure because sending a safety from 6 yards off the LOS takes way too much time.

I definitely agree with you, but it's extremely difficult to get pressure rushing 4 on a consistent basis.

I guess it's somewhat irrelevant given that our head coach and defensive coordinator remain the same.

I wish these guys would try to adapt to the personnel better than forcing Sheldon Rixhardson into outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.

We don't have the greatest linebackers in the world to run a 4-3 defense but I liked the defense we ran against the Redskins a couple years ago. A bit of a 5-2 look or a 4-2-5.

Jenkins-Wilk-McLendon-Williams-Richardson seems like it would stop the run effectively enough and take up enough blockers to let Lee &a Harris run free.

This frustrating coaching staff just seems hell bent on blitzing though. Granted, we needed to blitz last year because the pass rush was nonexistent.

Hopefully we get rid of Richardson because it'll be addition by subtraction (even as good of a player he is). Wilkerson/Richardson/Williams on the field at the same time in a 3-4 look clog the fuck up out of the field. None of the offensive lineman have to fan out and protect the edge because there's no speed to be a consistent threat.

I've made the comparison before. It reminds me of Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire on the Knicks. They both scored from the same area of the court allowing defenses to load up the paint.

We need an edge rusher to stretch an offensive lines blocking scheme. Maybe Jenkins can take a step forward and be that player?

Unfortunately our stupid ass coaching staff puts a player like that out on an island in flat responsibility in pass coverage. Shaking my damn head.

I keep asking people this but I never get a straight answer from anyone.

What is the downside of having Mo change to a NT in a 4-3 front playing the 1 technique? He already has done it before in Temple and the NFL. It's the absolute perfect role for Mo. Leonard takes the 3T.

He has the length, strength, and size to play that position. I think this change would benefit Williams.

Because you can't pay your NT $15M a year to do the job. It just doesn't work unless you find a young Lawrence Taylor working on his rookie deal to give you the outside pass rush.

This is a great way of looking at a switch right now. The Jets do not have the personnel to make it work and so they'd need to dedicate a lot of early draft picks over the next couple of years to finding missing pieces. That's picks they really need to spend on the offense at this point.

The Jets have two players who work well in a 3-4 on the defensive line, assuming that Richardson is a goner. At the moment those are their two best players on the defensive side of the ball. Switching to a 4-3 makes both of them less of an asset because they both want to play the same position.

Let's take money of the equation for the sake of this question. Plus you can always throw Mo at the 3T on certain plays. Of course Jets would need to compliment the interior rush with some speed on the outside, but I see no downside to this. Once we get that speed, you can't double everyone. Jets then exploit the match up.

You can't take money out of the equation. It's a capped roster.

The best the Jets can hope for if they try to play Mo and Leo Williams inside in a 4-3 is that they somehow put together all the pieces for a year or two on defense while at the same time fielding an effective offense.

It's more likely that they have half the pieces in play and are still lacking an explosive outside pass rusher when they need one. Even if they put the pieces together they're going to have to cut Mo to pay the pass rusher after a year or two. You only have so many dollars to pay on defense and the Jets have been over the number for most of the last decade without enough on offense to justify the expense on defense.

Do you think the Jets are closer to a good 4-3 defense or a good 3-4? Cause right now, I see the 3-4 aspect requiring more resources in terms of the draft. It requires more attention. Finding versatile 3-4 linebackers / 4-3 DEs are extremely hard to do and the Jets have missed out on a lot of good pass rushers because they were looking for this DeMarcus Ware type player that can line up anywhere and cover. They've been looking for a player like that for the last 10+ years.

Jets need to go back to a more simplistic approach on defense, and field that efficient offense. Jets are an inside linebacker, and speed rusher(s) away from becoming a true 4-3 team should they decide to do it. In a 3-4, Jets need all types of things. Lee can't play inside linebacker in a 3-4, so the Jets need 2 and from there where does Lee fit in the defense? He no longer fits on the team. You need more 3-4 pass rushers. It's going to require more resources.

It's time to ditch it. If Mo doesn't pan out, the majority of the guaranteed money he's owed will be paid to him this season. He could be gone in 2 yrs. Cap wise, Jets will be in good shape. It's nothing more then a band-aid contract. Almost makes me want to forget about drafting Malik Hooker from OSU and just drafting Reuben Foster from Alabama and plug him in as your middle linebacker. He's your Luke Keuchly.

The Jets aren't close to a good 3-4 or 4-3. They have more pieces for the 3-4 though. This is not surprising given that Rex controlled the defensive picks for 6 years.

Offensive line is the way to go. Not defense. Great offensive line---decent pass rush. And build outward

You're right. The Jets have WAAAAAAY overspent on "D" for too long, and ignored the "O". They're like a guy who spends all his money customizing his car, but ignoring the engine and drive train.

I tend to agree with the idea that they ought to go to a 4-3, but frankly I don't know enough to say if they have enough of the personnel to do it. And I would scream bloody murder if they decided to revamp their alignment by drafting mostly "D" again. And while their pass defense this year sucked, their run defense was was one of the best. Of course that's skewed because why would anyone run the ball against them when they could pass so much more productively? I do think though that if they got an elite pass rusher to put pressure on the QB they would dramatically improve the pass defense because QBs wouldn't have all that time to exploit their secondary. Elite pass rusher is the only concession I would make to the defense in this draft. And unless it was Garrett at #6, I wouldn't be taking that pass rusher their over an elite "O" player - Watson, Mahomes, Fournette, Cook, Howard.

I think you have it absolutely backwards. To run a straight 3-4, the Jets need a pass-rushing OLB and another ILB to replace Harris either this season or next. Lee can absolutely play ILB in a 3-4. To say he can't is ridiculous. I suppose Ryan Shazier can't play ILB either.

To run a 4-3, Jenkins might be ok at one DE position, but unless I'm mistaken, I think he played in a 3-4 his entire collegiate career at UGA, so he'd have some adjustment and who knows how good he would be as a 4-3 DE. They need a true pass rusher. Mauldin is not it. They need a MLB and a strongside LB. If they use Mo at the 3 Technique (which I think would be fairly ineffective), then they'd need another DT to play the 1 technique (and don't say Williams, because his talents would be totally wasted at that spot).

I don't think I have it backwards at all. It remains to be seen if Lee can play 3-4 ILB at a high level, however his natural position is a strong side linebacker in a 4-3. He's in open space and it would probably maximize his play. In the Nickel, you shift Lee inside. He would be in open space and that's how Lee operates. Right not blockers are eating him up.

Jenkins can play both schemes, he has the skill-set just like Calvin Pace did. He's actually a complete football player and that's why I wanted him on the Jets. Mentioned this a bunch of times, but the Jets still need to find a speed rusher to compliment the interior pass-rush. Mo would be the one playing the 1 technique and Leonard would be the 3 technique, based off match-ups you can switch this up. What Mo does best is open opportunities for others and is superb in the run game; that is what is required schematically for the 1 tech. He has the length, power, technique and size.

What we need to realize is the Jets need a true pass-rusher regardless of scheme. They need a MLB regardless of scheme. Jets require depth. The 4-3 operation to me seems like a better idea and would require less resources. You don't need stars at every position. 2 GOOD players at every level would be nice.

I don't disagree that some players are out of position, but in terms of blitzing, Bowles cut that down significantly in 2016.

He tried a lot more 4 man fronts and hoped the d-line could generate pressure. They couldn't. The defense sucked when they didn't blitz. In 2015 when they were flying around blitzing every passing down they were much better.

Wilkerson took 2016 off. coasting his way through games.
