    NY Jets: Giving It Away
    by Smackdad Feb 2, 2017, 7:40am EST

It's been almost ten years. For some of our younger readers it may be so long ago that you have few coherent memories of it. There was a time when a quarterback by the name of Chad Pennington took snaps for the Jets. A time when the Jets were not perennially one of the most generous teams in the NFL, charitably giving the ball to their opponents on a weekly basis.

Pennington could not stay healthy, and the Jets moved on after the 2007 season. Since 2007 the Jets have been the most charitable team in the NFL. One after another quarterback has taken snaps for the Jets in the last decade, from a Hall of Fame quarterback like Brett Favre to guys who never had any business playing in the NFL like Matt Simms. There have been high draft picks and low draft picks and undrafted quarterbacks. There have been guys with howitzers for arms and guys who couldn't break a pane of glass. There have been run first guys and pocket passers. Through the past decade more than a dozen different quarterbacks have thrown passes for the Jets, and other than the green and white uniforms, they have shared but one thing: they have all been unusually generous with the ball.

It's been almost ten years since Chad Pennington threw his last pass for the Jets during the ill fated 2007 season. In the last decade the Jets have thrown more interceptions than any other team in the NFL. The Jets have the dubious distinction of having led the NFL in interceptions twice in the last ten years. Three other times they have been in the top (or should we say bottom?) five of the league in interceptions thrown. Never in the last decade have the Jets finished better than 12th. It all adds up to the sorry total of 192 interceptions thrown by the Jets over the last ten years, more than any other team in the NFL by eight interceptions. The two stingiest teams in the NFL over that time have been the Patriots and the Packers, both with all time great quarterbacks at the helm the large majority of snaps. The Jets over the past decade, with a spirit of generosity that knows no bounds, have thrown one more interception than the Patriots and Packers combined.

With such a history of giving the ball away the remarkable thing is the Jets have still managed as many winning seasons (four) as losing seasons in the last decade. One wonders just how successful the Jets could have been if they could just protect the ball. The only season in the last decade in which the Jets placed in the top 12 NFL teams in terms of fewest interceptions thrown was 2010. It is perhaps not a coincidence that 2010 was the best Jets team since 1998.

Here is the full list of all NFL teams with the number of interceptions thrown over the last ten years. It should come as little surprise that with a few notable exceptions like the Giants the teams with fewer interceptions thrown have a high correlation with sustained success. If the Jets are ever to emerge as a perennial contender a good place to start would be to become a whole lot stingier with the ball.

    Team - Interceptions

    Patriots - 88
    Packers - 103
    49ers - 118
    Seahawks - 127
    Chiefs - 128
    Falcons - 135
    Broncos - 141
    Steelers - 141
    Ravens - 144
    Redskins - 144
    Vikings - 144
    Titans - 146
    Dolphins - 147
    Chargers - 148
    Cowboys - 149
    Bengals - 152
    Panthers - 153
    Colts - 154
    Bills - 155
    Texans - 155
    Jaguars - 157
    Eagles - 159
    Saints - 159
    Raiders - 161
    Buccaneers - 162
    Rams - 165
    Browns - 169
    Giants - 173
    Lions - 177
    Bears - 182
    Cardinals - 184
    J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets !!!!!! - 192

Not only do we have the high score but we more than doubled the Patriots total.

It doesn't seem like they missed Revis much after he left even though he did help them get a SB win.

I would like to give a special thanks to Geno Smith and all the Geno bots supporting him for helping us to achieve this impressive accomplishment.

Also, kudos to the front office for $12 million well spent this year to put us over the top!

just kiddin Hasty....but yeah, I have to admit I didn't know we gave it away THAT much. I would have guessed in middle somewhere or a bit worse. And I know our defense hasn't done shit on the other side to help out either

The era of Mark Sanchez and Geno smith vs the era of Tom Brady. No surprise here.

Not surprising seeing as we have had the worst cast of Qbs in the NFL besides maybe the Browns for the last 10 years

I don't always agree with Hasty, but this thread is pretty fucking valid.

And embarrassing for a fan of this shitty team.

    Well surprise surprise.....

The Jets loaded up on Defense "to win Championships" for 10 years but could never get there because the QBs and Offense sucked

Excuse me but time to get back to my Rocket Science homework...(lol...this Rocket SCientist believed Turnover Fitzs lies but the Geno boyz are far more deluded hahah)

Today on the NFL Network they were breaking down why Kraft and Bellichik have won 20% of the modern era SBs and they concluded that MANAGEMENT and a SYSTEM TO WIN is much more important than high priced players and drafting BPAs...owner willing to provide $ and resources

So careful selection of quality players and FAs to FIT YOUR SYSTEM gets the job done year after year ...

Why is it so hard to not copy what your chief competitor is doing well?????

    Hmmmm..

PROBLEM # 1 .our Owner is Band Aid boy not a business genius like Kraft or Blank

PROBLEM # 2 There is no stated SYSTEM to win...oops our OCs have not stayed and new one hasn't called a play...OMG in Heaven!!

PROBLEM #3 Our Managers are terrible Coaches without a clue...GM powerless and cant fire HC

Oh well..thats all I got on such a negative historical stat for Jets

PROBLEM #4: Systemic cheating needs to be ingrained into the culture.

Want to know what coincides with this perfectly? Our shitty drafting. Only one offensive player selected in the 1st round since 2007. Mark Sanchez...

    You nailed it!

I made the point awhile ago that both Hess and Woody were more interested in their profits than in spending money to build a good organization, and some people jumped on me with "proof" that Woody has spent a lot of money (i.s. Revis for one example). But my point then, and now, is that both owners tried to build and run this team by cutting corners. Yes, they spent money, but not enough at the right times. For example, hiring Parcells and giving him a lot of money, but then not spending in other other areas. Or when they just missed going to the SB with Sanchez, they didn't spend the money to keep or replace the talent that departed. Kraft and BB are proof that you don't have to spend the MOST money, but you DO have to have a plan and spend whatever that requires to execute it year after year. But, as you called Woody "Band Aid Boy", that's HIS "business plan": keep trying to patch a sinking ship with band aids.

Really, as long as he owns this team - or at least fails to hire someone to be COMPLETELY in charge of the team that knows how to build and run a winning organization, all the other moves are just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Why would anyone under the age of 30 be a fan of this team? Seriously?

Self-flagellation? The same people that cut themselves obsessively with razor blades and tie their hair into man-buns.

Lol every time I think about this I have to shake my head. On top of not drafting offense since schanhez half of the first rounders they picked have been busts
