Then how do you explain all the "D" picks for the last decade-plus? We certainly didn't "need" all of them - they were picked because of a bias towards defense by the management/coaches. We need to break out of that mindset. I'm not saying that we should ignore "D", but our first pick should be someone who makes a big difference on "O"; perhaps even our 2nd pick too - as you yourself said, this draft is lighter in offensive difference makers, and heavy on defensive ones, so we should grab "O" while they're available - and obviously keeping BPA in mind for all picks. But if it's close between an "O" and a "D" player, I'm going to advocate picking "O" right now.
Garrett is the only guy on "D" I would take at #6, and he won't be there barring a miracle. That said, if Watson were also there, I would take Watson, but I know I'm in a very small minority on that, and Macc wouldn't do that either. But until we get a FQB I would pick the highest rated QB every draft until we do.
Mo Wilkerson was not a need pick. He was the BPA and Rex took all defense regardless of rank and need. Gholston was not better than Jonathan Stewart and Domanick Rodgers Cromartie and Jerrod Mayo were better choices and needs.
Yeah but he was our first pick in the 2nd round big difference. Everyone laughed at Al Davis for taking Ray Guy in the first round. Greatest punter ever. He changed the game.
one outlier doesn't prove a point. we would have been better adding talent at any other position then taking a kicker in the 2nd round thinking the he was the missing piece to the super bowl puzzle. he wasn't and the roster was thinner because of it. its the result of drafting for need
Mo was a very good player, but the need at DE was very real. With Gholston, you proved our point. There were better players, but Gholston fit the Jets glaring need at OLB.
I wouldn't be too down on Mo even though he had a poor 2016 season - the injury to his leg imo, was a hidden issue that no one in the the Jets org cared to admit to, for whatever reason. I expect a strong rebound in 2017. Vernon was a pick based on his strong showing at the combines - real bad choice because combine performance does not give a good indication of a players football instincts....just his physical attributes. BPA, can be very subjective but I thought the Milliner/Pryor picks were decent. Wilson was a disaster !
Gholston was a need pick without question. We didn't have anyone that offenses truly feared from a pass rush perspective. It was a need pick. Most of them you listed were.
gholston was a need,true, but he was also considered by many to be the 6th best player in what was a 5 player draft. as bad as he was i don't really hold tanny and mangini to the fire for that one. other than that pick they had some good drafts, sometimes it just doesn't workout.
Totally agree about Mo. I was and still a fan of his. The combine risers always scare me. Mike Mamula being another one that fizzed in the NFL
The only way we're going to have a contending team is if we develop a prolific offense. Screw the ground and pound. It's fine if you make the playoffs, but being explosive is they way to get to the playoffs. I'm so sick of a conservative offense and stock piling defenders. The NFL is different today, all you have to do is look at the offenses that made the final 4 this year. The Falcons, Steelers and Packers had suspect defenses.
