And Brady could be worth about 40-50M/year without the cap. The reason a top-tier QB like Brady can't get that much is simply because of the salary cap. While it is true that Brady can't get that much he could probably get about double his current compensation if he did not bend over backwards to accommodate his team like no other player in the entire league.
Again, the whole purpose of the salary cap was to bring parity to the league, according to NFL official. I don't see how anyone can objectively say that the cap has been successful in doing this.
The cap hasn't resulted in parity, but the lack of parity isn't because of the cap. Getting rid of the cap would probably make things worse.
First, I think there should be a cap within the cap. Say $10M/per max contract. That would leave a WHOLE LOT of cash for a lot more players. Right now teams typically have about 5 players taking up 50-60% of the cap, leaving not much for the other 45+ players. So when a cpl of your star players go down, especially QBs, your team really sucks ass. Or max salary by position. QBs, $12M. Skill (WR, DB) $8M. O-Line, D-Line $6M. RB, TE $5M. Kicker $1. If at least half your roster gets paid really good, a lot more parents would push their kids into football so those same kids could buy them a house down the road.
That wouldn't help us. We're already cheap on the QB position because we don't have one. The teams with franchise QBs taking up a large chunk of their cap would benefit, and those teams are already doing better than us.

That wouldn't help us much. Mo is our highest paid player, and his cap hit is 18M next year. The cap is about 168M, so your proposal would knock his cap hit down to 16.8M, saving us 1.2M. It would help a team like Atlanta, where Matt Ryan has a 23.75M cap hit, or any team with a highly paid franchise QB. But those are the teams that don't need the help.
oh I hear ya, I was referring more the the NFL as a whole. Team salaries are top loaded, with a handful of stars accounting for the bulk of the pie. I would like to see teams control the top end spending so more players get more money, and vets can stick around longer. It would help FA a bit too....you wouldn't have a Revis or a Suh coming in taking 20% of the cap from the team (players) that have been here all along. Teams would be healthier if the money was more evenly distributed. You KNOW it burns teammates asses that Revis grabs 10 times what they get, every game, and Revis is a dead man walking losing games for us. They see Revis laughing all the way to the bank while they struggle a bit paying his agent and living the life an NFLer is 'expected' to live, especially with their families with their hands out and every charity begging for help. A Million dollars don't go as far as it used to!
Without a cap the pats would prob win more super bowls and the jets would still suck winners win and losers loose in this league
On a more serious note: What's hurting the teams the most is that, there just isn't enough places to raise their QBs. In the soccer world, there are lower tier leagues, where top league teams can assign their youth players so they could gain experience and learn. Hell - most good clubs have their own youth academy.
This is exactly what I said to my wife. You have the top 5-6 qbs. Year in and out they make the playoffs and the Super Bowl. At this point what is the purpose of watching games if we know who will be there in the end? Why torture our selves? It has become a qb driven league and if you are not a team to get lucky to find one or draft one you will suffer in NFL purgatory forever. Just look at the Jets, Lions, Chiefs, Vikings, Dolphins, Bills, Bengals, Browns, Titans, Jaguars, Texans, Chargers, Raiders, Redskins, Eagles, Bucs, Bears, 49ers, Cardinals, and Rams. The teams I just listed have had success and won Super Bowls (and some currently have a qb but the qb is not in the top 5 or 6; Matt Ryan could jump to 5 or 6 with a win in a few weeks). I fell in love with football in the 80's and 90's. Bump and run was allowed and it was a defensive game. I know I am in the minority and I am also aware changes have happened because of injuries but I do miss the defensive battles and having a chance because you have a great defense. The Giants and Bears of the 80's, Ravens and Bucs of the 2000's and so on. Really different game now that favors the qb. I'll watch but I hope it reverts back somewhat to what it used to be.
Couldn't agree more. Kurt Warner never would've been found if not for NFL Europe. I think offensive line play has gotten worse without a developmental league. A developmental league would allow for the offensive lines to learn proper techniques and help them develop. Look at Brian Winters it took him three years to develop into a solid offensive lineman. Like a qb it takes an offensive lineman a number of years to develop. With all the billions the NFL makes I'm shocked they haven't created a developmental league to help make the product better.
How can you do that ? It is bad enough people spelling it loose in the first place but to do it after spelling loser is a special talent
Good post. Football now seems like Arena football, especially the indoor stadiums. No wind, no snow, no nothing. It's more like watching basketball than football. I remember when receivers wouldn't dare go over the middle.
I still say the Jets just need to offer top players in F.A. a place where they can have another business, make Le'Veon Bell an offer of $3M a year for 5 years but also let him open Bell's Ice cream in the training facility where the team pays him $5M a year to provide unlimited ice cream to the players. Kevin Zeitler, $2M a year for 4 years and his lawn service gets a $6M a year contract to cut the grass at Woody's summer home. Lots of side businesses for the players to make some extra coin. I guessing this is a perfectly legal way to circumvent the cap since the P*ts do it with Br*dy.
This is pretty smart, since players have finally realized that DeMaurice Shit is getting bankrolled by the owners. The only reason we got Brandon "best Jets wide receiver of all time, what ball, oh shit I dropped it" Marshall was because he could take a golf cart to his Showtime studio. The Jets should let Tony Romo open a backwards hat company on Madison and also be able to make appearances at his shop 4 times a week. Especially since he'll be injured on most of those days.
