Ask 5: Who will Browns select with top pick of 2017 NFL Draft? By Daniel Jeremiah NFL Media analyst Published: Jan. 18, 2017 at 01:54 p.m Now that the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the 2017 NFL Draft has come and gone, we have a clearer look at the player pool teams will be selecting from in late April. The Browns own the top overall pick and I was curious to find out what other team executives expect them to do with that selection. Do they fall in love with a quarterback? Do they add some firepower to their pass rush? Or, do they follow last year's playbook and trade down? I reached out to five personnel executives and posed this question: Who will the Browns select with the first overall pick? Here are their answers. Executive 1: Texas A&M Myles Garrett "I don't think the Browns have a choice. ... It has to be Myles Garrett. He has such rare physical tools. He's clearly the best player in the draft." Executive 2: Garrett "Garrett makes the most sense. The Browns are switching to a 4-3 defense and he fits perfectly. He's the best player available and he fits what they need." Executive 3: Garrett "There's no quarterback this year worthy of the first pick. Plus, next year's QB class is going to be much better than this group. So, if you reach for a quarterback this year, you miss out on a player like Garrett and you remove yourself from taking a much better QB next year? That doesn't make any sense. Just take Garrett at No. 1." Executive 4: Garrett "Don't overthink it. Garrett is an elite talent at the second most important position on the field." Executive 5: Garrett "I'd be shocked if they don't pick Garrett. I guess they could trade down, but they did that last year and missed out on (Carson) Wentz. I thought that was a big mistake." Summary: It's a sweep for Garrett. Conclusion: All five executives agreed that the Browns should and will end up selecting Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett with the first overall pick. I agree. I believe Garrett is the best player in this draft class and he would give the Browns something they desperately need -- an elite defensive player. They have added several quality players in the last few drafts, but they lack blue-chip, difference-making talent. Garrett has all of the tools to quickly emerge as one of the NFL's top edge rushers. The Browns need to upgrade the quarterback position, but I don't think it would be smart to use this first pick to address that need. There simply isn't a signal-caller worthy of the top spot in this draft class.
Makes total sense, but I hate it. I was really hoping that somehow, some way, Garrett would fall to us.
I don't care what they do with #1. I want them to trade up with the Jets at #6, though. I'd be tickled pink with #12, #33, and #65 for the #6. Cleveland would have #1 and #6 to get two big name stars, along with #51, and the first pick in rounds 4, 5, and 6. Along with any compensatory picks. Jets would have #12, #33, #39, #65, #70, and high picks in 5, 6, and 7, plus compensatory picks. Still no 4th rounder, though. If they couldn't swing that deal, maybe #12, #33, and the first pick in the 4th could be a nice fallback position.
I get semi-annoyed when people make posts saying we should trade back 5-15 spots in the draft, and collect 5 more draft picks. Of course we would all like to add better depth in the draft, but the fact is that most teams don't want to trade a pile of picks to move up a little bit. It really only happens at 1, and 2 in the draft for a QB which I really can't see happening again this year.
The quantity of picks is OK but Cleveland would be losing a lot of value in that trade. It would be more realistic if we got pick 12 and Cleveland's other second rounder (40 something I think).
Some seem to forget that Cleveland are in a worst situation than the Jets and need every pick. They need to plug alot of holes even more than the Jets. It would be great to trade down to 12 but picks at 12 and 6 will provide similar value so why would a team give up a good pick to do that.
I care about the Jet holes to fill, not the city of Cleveland with their other Championships I am starting to become more of a quantity over "quality" guy Follow Bellisht style and grab as many lottery tix as possible,,,start with OL Olb CB RB etc Some other team might go for this other than Cleveland Lets try it jmho
We might get slightly overpaid if Cleveland wants a QB at 6 but after the first four picks I think the next 10-12 guys are pretty much in tge same tier. At #12 guys like Fournette, the #2 WR, or even the #3 QB could be available.
I guess as it's been mentioned it all depends on who falls and how much other teams value that said player. Similar to the LT who dropped last year when he was a concesus top 3 pick.
Cleveland has a lot more ammo to trade with in this draft than any other team. Anybody who is advocating trading down just about has to think Cleveland is the team to trade with. It's a pretty steep fall off from there, maybe Dallas? Finding someone who wants to trade up to #6 AND has the means to do it is going to remain unlikely.
I was tinkering with a three way trade with Cleveland and Tennessee that had us picking 18th overall.
Using the draft value chart Jets get Pick 18 - OJ Howard TE Pick 33 - trade down to 43 for D'Onta Freeman RB Pick 52 - BPA - Maybe a pass rusher (one of them could fall here) Pick 65 - Antonio Garcia OT Titans get Pick 6 Pick 12 Browns get Pick 5 Pick 39 Pick 82 Jets keep pick 70 - Quincy Wilson CB
This team would be a whole new kind of stupid to take a TE in the 1st round. Additionally, 0% chance Wilson lasts till the 3rd round.
Thanks, but drafting a TE first? No Way! There HAS to be a better QB, RB, OL, pass rusher, DB available at that point, and all of those positions are MUCH more needed than TE. Using the Player Rankings from DrafTek: http://www.drafttek.com/Top-100-NFL-Draft-Prospects-2017.asp At 18 we could get Trubisky. And if you didn't trade down from 33 (what did you get in return?) you could snag Garrett Bolles or Dan Feeney. At 52 you could get a RB - Samaje Perrine, Edge Rusher - Jordan Willis, S - Budda Baker, or even another stud OL in Adam Bisnowaty. And at 65 you could still get your TE - Evan Engram or Jordan Leggett. To me, TE is the LEAST of our worries.
