Brian Winters deal averages about $7.0M per year, I'm told. Falls in line with guard market. Key will be gtd $ + structure

You guys kill me. $8M per is 'about right' for a below avg guard, but $9M for the best Nose Tackle in football on a team that runs a 3-4 was 'outrageous'.

Anyone who seriously thought it was 4 years at 2 million per is lost.

7 mil for a guy who ended season on IR while having only 1 above average season? A little too much if you ask me.

Jets have to pay 89% of the cap over time. If they're planning to dump a bunch of veteran contracts Winters is a great place to sink a bit of the money they need to spend anyway. He's still young. He's improving. He's a Jet.

The contract might be a bit overpriced but I'm glad they put the money into one of their draftees and I'm glad it's on the offensive line.

I'm happy with this signing. However, this team is screwed if Mac doesn't get off his fat ass and start revamping the OL.

A tackle early in the draft seems like a no-brainer at this point. Mangold might be the vet that avoids the cap massacre for this season and then the OL is looking ok for next year and potentially quite good in the future as the young tackles shake out. Brian Winters might be the Jets center in a year or two when Mangold retires depending on how things go.

Damn, Winters is apparently the 5th best guard in the league. Guy is doing work to hide that from everybody, but macc.

This was a solid signing. I'm curious how the contract is constructed overall.

Wow! I was all in favor of bringing back Winters, but not paying him like he's a top 3 guard in the NFL.

Another dopey move by a dopey GM. McCagnan will be fired next year thank god

Winters is coming off a solid season and is still young so the chances of him getting even better are good.

Money is a bit high but you can't pay these guys peanuts. There all gonna get higher then expected contracts, it's just the way it is now.

I disagree. The Jets' secondary was in as bad a shape or worse when Mac took over. Any FA is going to get overpaid, but to entice one to come to a team like the Jets that were in the shape the Jets were when Mac took over, one has to overpay even more. Skrine was considered to be one of the best, if not the best slot corners in the NFL. He was the first player Mac signed, and helped bring some validity to the Jets.

Is it more than I'd like? Yes. Who could have Mac signed instead that was better and cheaper?

Solid player and decent deal...not much else to say really

I don't think he's all that great but the metric sites like him and I'm not going to argue.

Didn't know we had a Marshal Yanda in our roster , if so he will be worth the contract we just gave him .

Seems a high contract number, but with the way the cap figure is increasing, who knows how it will look in a few years. He's really been pretty decent since he moved to the right side and seems to keep improving. He's a decent starter, no more, but it's a good idea to lock him down now.

And he would have probably gotten more as a FA as he is well liked everywhere but here.

Look at the past ...All you guys on TGG who glorify defense didn't bat an eyelash when Mac handed the mega millions to Mevi$ and overpriced deals to Skrine and Gilchrist..for what?

Now everyone has their panties in a bunch over moves to get a quality OL

At least BW is good and a young kid

I think it is just the perception lag. All people remember is how terrible he was in years 1 and 2 as a LG. Now every mistake he makes seems twice as bad as it really is and it seems he makes them twice as often as he really does. You also have to remember who he had alongside him for much of the year and how terrible we were in general. He played well all things considered.
