They gotta get LT and Mangold's replacement right or it won't matter. They're extending him thru his prime now. Could be worse. He's much better than when he first hit the field right after he was drafted
I did say the line of, Clady, Carpenter, Mangold, Winters, Ijalana were very good. Hopefully they get Mangold back on a restructured deal and get a LT, they should be ok.
For an average guard with one solid season under his belt coming off an IR'd season, that's a pretty bad contract. I'm glad we kept him but damn. That ties him for the 7th highest paid guard in the NFL next year and would've made him the 4th highest paid guard this year. Bad contract IMO.
Just wait until free agency starts, you'll see the market go up for guards. This deal was good timing. He won't be 7th for long. I'd say Winters is in the top 15 in terms of guards in the NFL no?
This is would make much more sense but it's not true.. the deal is 8 mill per year. Winter's hasn't played a full season since he's been a Jet, he was deemed a major bust up until this last year, and he is now the 4th highest paid Jet behind Wilk, Revis, and Brandon. I'm all for keeping guys in-house but this sounds incredibly overpaid to me.
eh, i'm waiting to see the guarantees before i call it good or bad. trying to think of the last draft pick to get an extension, drawing a blank, anyone know?
Close to 8 mil is steep, but Jets actually got out ahead of the rest of the teams and set the market. As we all know, once FA officially starts, there is going to be some very steep contracts handed out for o-linemen. Good to see we got Winters on a good deal for both sides. Having Carpenter, Winters, Wesley Johnson, and Shell is a good core group, now we just have to find a LT and some depth.
http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/guard/ You don't think the market will go up? TJ Lang very solid for the Pack. The market price could increase and more than likely it will
Winters will be the 8th highest paid player, Marshall 9th. Wilk$18,000,000 Revis $15,333,333 Claddy $10,500,000 Mangold $9,075,000 Decker $8,750,000 Skrine $8,500,000 Sheldon $8,069,000 Winters $8,000,000 B Marshall $7,500,000 Of course with Revis,Claddy,Mangold,Skrine , Richardson and possibly all being gone, he could be the second highest paid player on the roster. I'm sure the FAs we sign will exceed winters contract though.
Those numbers may be true for next year ALONE but on average he will be the 4th. For example Skrine's average is 6.25, Decker's is 7.25.
True I based it on next season. The majority of those player making more will be gone next season or before 2018. The only constant in the NFL is that salaries go up every year. Enuwa will likely get more as will FAs and other young players when extended. It's too early to really judge the Winters contract until all the details are known. How it's structured , guaranteed money etc.
A bit high $ yes But at least we are building an OL... albeit at premium prices garsh.. Dump that dead wood Mevis Skrine Gilchrist Shitz and these moves are not so painfull Franchise QB?? Oh where oh where can thee be??
I could just be being a little bit overcritical because of Maccagnan's short history of bad contracts and my dislike early on for Brian Winters in his career. He's developed very nicely. It'd be a huge lift for this offense line if he can elevate to a pro bowl level. I don't think the offense is really in that bad of shape. We just need to make sure we keep getting the offensive line younger. The secondary is an absolute mess though.
Skrine's contract is an absolute travesty. What were they thinking signing a career nickel corner to that sort of deal and then restructuring it to guarantee more of his money for longer? It makes no sense. We need Burris or Daryl Roberts to turn into NFL starters badly. I like Burris' coverage ability because he's physical and gets his head around but I think he's an interesting proposition at safety.
