I'm sure you heard it by now: a mentally disabled teen was tortured in Chicago. The thugs made him drink toilet water, shouted and made him repeat “F*** Donald Trump. F*** white people.”
It's reported everywhere, here is a link
    http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/01/05/second-torture-video-shows-teen-forced-to-drink-from-toilet/

Now a couple of prominent people on CNN saying ...

    Don Lemon:
“I can’t say that it’s a hate crime... I don’t think it’s evil. I think these are young people and I think they have bad home training."

Symone Sanders (former press secretary for Bernie Sanders):
"That is not a hate crime,” she said. “Hate crimes are because of a person’s racial ethnicity, their religion, their gender, their disability—your political leanings, because someone doesn’t like your political leanings, they do something bad to you, that is not a hate crime.”

So, I'm curious what do you guys think?

It's not a hate crime. It is "White Privilege"

Well, this Simone lady kinda has a point: if it's about your political leanings as opposed to being about race, gender or religion...
TBH, I'm a little confused here, hence the poll in the first place.

On one hand, it shouldn't matter what you hate me for; hate is hate.
On the other, political is not a part of definition of the hate crime, so if you hate my political views, it doesn't count.

Now, I never liked the concept of hate crime on the first place. To me it's either crime, or it's not; I don't care about your motivation. But since the law is in the books, I have hard time understanding the guidelines.

It sounds like a hate crime, though I'm not sure whether it has to do with race, disability, or both.

I disagree with Lemon on it not being evil.......it's pretty evil to abuse a disabled person for shits and giggles.

i don't know the exact law for hate crimes, but an interesting question is whether they did this simply because the guy was white or disabled?
if the answer to that is 'Yes', than maybe it is a hate crime.

Even if they don't pursue the hate crime angle, they might serve time on a number of other charges, and rightfully so.

The second when they mention the color of the person's skin, or who they voted for, it became a hate crime. If a white person kidnapped a black Hillary voter, would this even be a question?

They chose a white man, said "F*ck white people" during the attack, they were all African American, that right there tells me it had a racial aspect to it.

I also dislike the hate crime designation, not because it makes the penalty for the same crime more but because it is too hard to make that judgement. I have seen some crimes that I thought was clearly racially motivated not charged as a hate crime and then another that I could not for the life of me see how it was a hate crime, was charged that way.

I am pretty sure your choice of Pres. is not criteria for a hate crime. If a white guy kidnapped and beat a black guy, the whole time saying, f*ck Clinton, it would not be a hate crime. On the other hand if he mixed in f*ck black people with the f*ck Clintons, then I think you have a good case for a hate crime.

Probably not, but since it didn't happen, you can't really know for sure.

What if the victim was made to say "f*ck Obama".. would that qualify as hate crime?

I remember some news organizations pretty much saying that RNC critical of Obama because of the latent racism.
Wouldn't that mean "f*ck Obama" is a racist remark?

Nope, as much as some people try to frame any negative remark about Obama as racist it just isn't so without other factors being present.

The Fuck Trump these assailants shouted is not the factor for determining that this was a hate crime.

    Hate Crime

I know what hate crime is because abzymul, Dierking JStokes and other Jet Supremacists on this board have tortured me a lot for being a Muslim.

Kidding aside, this thing isn't only hate crime but also a crime against humanity. If it was in my power, I would strangle those 3 idiots in the middle of the city and have people hear their cries for mercy and pee in their face each time they opened their mouth.

It absolutely is a hate crime if you kidnap and beat someone for their choice of president. If the motivation was something other than something tangible like bumping into someone or a shouting match over a parking spot, it's a textbook hate crime.

"A hate crime (also known as a bias-motivated crime) is a prejudice-motivated crime, which occurs when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership (or perceived membership) in a certain social group."
