Couldn't agree more. If anything, seeing a full speed game would make TC seem half speed. Anytime you can make someone comfortable, they're going to do better. If the guy isn't ready, I'd say he's not worthy of his draft spot...which he really isn't. They passed over other prospects that gave better signals of possible success, maybe because they're arrogant or possibly (quite possibly) inept. Or, there's always the closet genius thing and he ends up Joe fucking Montana Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
My bet is that, if Bowles took over the Patriots for a week, and Cheat took over the Jets over a week, then Jets will beat the Patriots.
Jeez. Marshall has decided he'll ride or die with Fitz. I mean standing up for your QB is one thing but Fitz isn't even going to be with the team next year. Who gives a crap if Hack starts a meaningless game.
I can't figure out the fascination that people have with seeing Hackenberg on the field this year. He was clearly a project pick unlikely to be able to play even half-decently in 2016. Are Jets fans just masochists who need to be hurt in every way possible in a down season with a really gnarly off-season ahead and then likely another down season? From my perspective I'd be really happy if the Jets just sat Hackenberg until he forced his way onto the field, even though I suspect that moment will never come. I don't need to see another bad QB to somehow validate the fact that the Jets can't find a QB for their life at this point and have found only 2 good young QB's in the last 33 years.
Neither of them is going to get more than an exploratory look from anybody else at this point. Geno's leadership issues are pretty well documented at this point and Petty was a 4th round pick for a reason. If the Jets cut both of them loose next year, likely with Geno and iffy with Petty, they'd both get camp invites somewhere but I'm willing to bet the money wouldn't be much and little of it guaranteed. Ask yourself where these guys would have gotten a better shot than with the Jets early in their career? On most teams neither of them would have seen the field as much as they have and on the teams that have QB issues both of them likely would have sucked just as badly in the exposure they did get. Do you really think Geno Smith or Bryce Petty would have done anything with the Browns for example? What about the Bears? That one look good to you?
Brady played in a pro style offense at Michigan. He just needed the game to slow down a bit and he needed a game plan that fit his strengths. Petty played in a Spread Option and he needed the game to slow down and the Jets to play an offense that fit his strengths despite it being a bad offense at the NFL level. NFL DC's and players know how to break down an option offense and tear it to pieces. NFL players are too fast on defense for an option to be good unless the QB is extremely good. In college half the starting linebackers are going to be working outside football instantly when they graduate and most of the rest are going to get nothing more than a camp invite before they move on to real life.
If Hack has to spend the next 9 months fixing his many many problems, and Petty will be down for a good portion of that, the QB situation is at an all time low. Geno will be brought back by Bowles, remember he was our #2 until our turnstiles got him put on the IR. Geno is familiar with everything that Bowles and Gailey want so he has a major leg up on anyone in free agency. I am not a fan of Geno's play, but if I had to bet I would say there is a 75% chance Mac brings him back on the cheap. If Mac was willing to give Fitz a 12 million 1year deal, you know he will give Geno half that and keep him. We better hope Petty or Hack turns into Joe Willie, or Montana, or we will see Geno next year as our starter. Even if we draft someone with one of our first 4 draft picks, he will be "redshirted" due to the inability of our coaches to get any QB up to par before the season starts. I hate it, but get ready JETS fans....... Geno will be our 1st string QB next year. When this happens, will the Mac and Todd supporters be ready for them to get out of the big apple?
I think it's mostly based around hope that Mac is some sort of secret genius because you don't take project picks in the 2nd round.
With this team's history of developing Qb's, hell yeah I think Geno and Petty would have done much better ANYPLACE other than the NYJ's. In Geno's case, he wouldn't have been forced to start because he was the pet pick of an idiot rookie GM. In Petty's case, he would most likely have had a better CS to work with and develop his skillset. In both cases, they would have had better CS and better development had they been with a team with some Qb IQ. As it is, this franchise can now claim two more Qb's to go with the many Qb's they've destroyed over the decades since Pennington/Obrien/Namath. Since Hack won't see the field, his clock hasn't started running yearst.. Lucky him... Please Macc... Just release Petty right after the season and go sign a JAG off the scrap heap to play tackling dummy.
The Jets didn't destroy Geno and Petty. Neither of them was good enough to be a starting NFL QB. Once you get past pick 36 in the draft you need to be very lucky and very good at working with QB's to get a good starting QB out of the draft. If you have a real outlier who is under 6 feet like Russell Wilson and he doesn't get hurt, well that's very much the exception to the rule. The 36 pick is not a magical number. It means that the 4 worst teams in the NFL, likely all with QB problems, have passed on the guy twice. That makes him fairly unlikely to be a particularly good starting NFL candidate, again barring a strange combination of talent and will. At that point you're betting that your talent evaluation people are better than 4 other franchises plus each of the other teams that have passed once. If QB was not such a high impact position, well then everybody in the league wouldn't be focused on it like a laser and more real talent would be likely to slip through.
GM's that are secret geniuses better have QB whisperers that are secret geniuses also or a pick like the Hackenberg pick is just going to stand out like a glaring error after a year or two. The worst thing that could happen to the Jets is that Hackenberg finally finds himself in year 4 only he isn't a total star when it happens. Think of the dilemma the Broncos faced with Brock Osweiler only juxtapose it on a fanbase desperate for a QB instead of the Broncos. That's how the Jets wind up with a huge contract for a maybe and 4 more years on the unending search for a QB. I think the Jets should bury Hackenberg on the depth chart and see if he can fight his way up to the top. Cuz if he doesn't have the mojo to handle that type of adversity he'll never make it in this media market even if they hand it to him on a silver platter.
I dunno Brad. Teams always seem to find guys in the later rounds. Maybe they know what they're doing with Qb's. Maybe the Jets are simply unlucky but its not like Geno and Petty were bums in college. Both came out of their schools with talent but unfortunately, they were drafted by the Jets which of course, was the kiss of death. I can see a team like the Saints or the Chargers taking a flyer on Petty as they're gonna have to find successors at some point. Hopefully it will be a warm weather team as Petty doesn't look like he can handle real winters. I can see Geno in Frisco trying to play in Chip Kelly's system too. At any rate, we'll have a answer to this in the next two years one way or the other.
I agree. Maybe this is a crazy idea, but why not bring in Chad Pennington as a QB coach or consultant. He is very smart,. son of a coach. He is also Jets alumnus.
Marshall has turned his short tenure with the Jets into a sour one really. Wonder how the jets would have approached the Fitz contract standoff without Marshall and Decker continuously mouthing off their support for Fitz. He is blindly loyal to a QB who is more of a best friend to him than an actual NFL starting caliber QB.
Geno and Hackenberg were both controversial picks when they were made. Petty was a 4th round pick who the Jets likely saw as long-term depth more than a starter solution. The Cowboys clearly saw Dak Prescott as depth this year. They'd have taken him earlier if they thought he was going to be really good because nobody passes on a QB they think is going to be really good unless they have a mid-career star on the roster and Romo was both battered and ancient going into this year. The Jets problem is that they keep projecting the next franchise QB based on things that nobody else sees. Given their track record I'd stop doing that if I was them. Super secret talent doesn't exist in the NFL. Some times you get lucky and the stars align and a Kurt Warner or a Russell Wilson or a Dak Prescott comes along but you have to get really lucky for that to happen and you have to have set the table beforehand to get the most out of it. The Rams got a mid-prime Marshall Faulk for 2nd round picks just as the Greatest Show on Turf was gearing up. How lucky was that?
