Now that is complete bullshit. Petty didn't get an entire year on the bench. He wasn't even active his first year. Didn't get a first team rep until 12 games into his 2nd season and you want to call that adequate preparation? Really??? Yeah, Petty sucks...So does this FO/CS and their "planning". By the time Petty came on the field, the Jets had quit on the season. The Jets had one starter on the oline, the defense had already said fuck it. Petty walked into the worst possible situation for a rookie. Now all of a sudden the Jets develop a conscience and want to "protect" Hackenberg? I hope to hell Hack can survive getting sacked in the NFL. Maybe the Jets will figure out how to prevent that from happening too. Until Hack actually steps on the field and plays a meaningful down, we still don't know if he sucks or not. We don't know who our Qb will be in 2017 either. What we do know is that Petty got hammered repeatedly and Hack will be spared so they can continue "fixing his mechanics". Like I said. Keep the diapers on Hack until 2018 or beyond. No need to evaluate Hack during a real game when he can be evaluated in TC against scrubs. Maybe buy Macc some time to create a real NFL oline too. Gotta protect that 2nd round reach to make the GM look good.
I hear that's actually one of his strengths. Jokes aside, they should play him unless the expectation is that whoever lines up under center will just get mauled all game.
At least that... My God! How is the kid supposed to gain experience sitting on the bench...?? If the Jets are lucky, perhaps Buffalo does us a favor and knocks Shitz out of the game. Guess Hack will have to go in or they'll play Powell at QB out of fear.
I'm gonna pray everyday that Macc releases/cuts/trades Petty. The kid doesn't deserve the shit this organization has thrown his way. I'd like to think Macc has a conscious and will do the right thing. That way, Hack can get all the time he needs to get his "mechanics" fixed and prove he deserved being drafted where he was. The worst thing that can happen to Bryce Petty is to be on the Jets Roster by TC 2017.
In today's press conference, Bowles confirmed Fitz will start and that the team wouldn't gauge anything meaningful if they started hack (which I happen to agree with). The plan all along has been to red shirt Hack...no need to ruin that plan in a meaningless week 17 game. Let Fitz get screwed in his last game wearing a Jet uniform.
Since that's the case, I'm rooting for Buffalo to crush Shitz repeatedly from kickoff until the gun sounds.
I feel ya Cman. I was a wondering whether Petty was a bit skittish at the start of the Pats game because of that Suh/Wake malachi crunch. Now he was a torn labrum. Petty seems like a tough kid. Hope the Jets didnt ruin him already.
David Carr ring a bell? Remember a guy named Joey Harrington? Point being, it may be too late to salvage Petty. The only way to find out is to get the kid a fresh start ANYWHERE ELSE than Florham Pk. Geno Smith is in the same boat. Both need a change of scenery.
Jags were supposed to sit Bortles all year one but caved in and played him and he never adjusted his mechanics to live game action. He kept bad habits and while he threw for a lot of yards and touchdowns he didn't or hasn't developed how Caldwell planned.
Hack can do all that, I've seen it on film. The key is getting it done consistently and that's something I'm sure they'll work on in the offseason.
Precisely, like it or not the best and most consistent thing the Jets have done this year was sticking to their plan of red shirting Hack. Deviating from that plan in a week 17 game when most players will be thinking about their vacations would be pointless. Let Hack spend an entire offseason working on his mechanics, and let Fitz play in one last game. He spent months playing hard ball to get 12 million... mite as well let him earn that hefty pay check.
This is the right way to look at it. Hackenberg probably has a 10% chance to work out as an NFL starting QB. The Jets should do whatever they can to keep that chance from shrinking and reminding him that he's a bad QB in a meaningless game at the end of a lost season is about as far from "do no harm" as you can get.
I agree Fitz should pay a price for that $12mil heist he pulled off. That being said, playing Hack in the 2nd half of the last game of the season against a team going home is perhaps the best time to get the kid some real game experience. At this rate, Hack won't take a meaningful snap until 2018 at the soonest. Hopefully Macc signs a JAG to come in and play tackling dummy/Qb until Hack gets his mechanics fixed. Somebody has to start for the Jets in 2017 since nobody currently on the roster is capable of doing it. Out of curiosity, who exactly is in charge of "fixing" Hack?
If the Jets play Hackenberg and he sucks it will be a confirmatory event for the fan base. Better to put that off until you've really had a chance to overhaul his mechanics. I don't believe you can overhaul a player's mechanics at the pro level and make him a star. A better player maybe but the guy has played 6+ years of football by the time he gets drafted. If he was going to be a star based on his raw ability, well that's already happened by now. If he was going to fix his mechanics, well that's mostly happened as well. Kurt Warner didn't change his mechanics much, all he did was play Arena Football and learn to get rid of the ball instantly on short seam routes. Then the Rams rebuilt their offense around that ability when they realized he'd been hiding on the depth chart with all the coaches looking for him to be a "normal" QB.
If I had to guess Kevin Patullo and Chan Gailey are going to spearhead that effort...but yea wouldn't it be poetic justice if Fitz started and got hurt, and Hack had to play? Fitz has to be the luckiest back up ever....he continuously gets opportunities to start through injury
Aaron Rodgers was the exception to the rule. He had his mechanics overhauled in 3 off-seasons and now he's probably one of the best throwers of the football the league has ever seen. What Rodgers does under pressure however is maintain what he's learned and doesn't go back to awful habits. Will Hack do that? We don't know, but if he doesn't we will have a QB IMO.
Petty isn't NFL starter material. He might develop into an ok starter later in his career but it's going to take an unusual situation to make that happen. He just doesn't have NFL reaction times in terms of reads and throws and you can't add that later on. It's possible that as he gets older everything will settle down for him and he'll believe he belongs on an NFL field but right now it is obvious that Petty does not believe he's good enough to be on an NFL field. I have a friend who has been grooming his kid to be a basketball player at the high school level. The kid bought into the hype for awhile and got some minutes on the freshman team and did ok. Then he got thrown into the mix with Juniors and Seniors during summer drills and as he put it "can't hold onto the ball, they're all stealing it from me whenever I get it." Now that kid might turn into a basketball player some day but until he gets over the mental hump of "they're all stealing the ball from me" it isn't going to happen. Petty is stuck on a similar hump of his own and man it is going to be hard to get off of it when he can't make a post-snap read for his life.
If Petty ever does develop into a starter, it won't be with the Jets. If he can get on with a team that has on staff, a true Qb whisperer or a very successful pro (Brees) to learn from, things may turn out differently. What we do know is that the Jets aren't a good fit for either Petty or Geno and its best for the both of them to get out of dodge on a rocket.
Rodgers and Petty are apples and oranges. Rodgers was good enough coming out of Cal that he was in the conversation for the #1 pick in the draft until a few weeks before it happened. He also went to a rock solid organization with a Hall of Fame QB. He also was of the opinion that he was good enough to start from the get-go and he hated running the scout team for 3 years for the Packers. The Packers knew what they were doing though. Running the scout team got him exposed to a bunch of different offenses and it got him a ton of snaps against his teammates. By the time he took over the team nobody in the organization had any doubt about his abilities, which is why they cut the thread on Brett Favre when he still had some gas left in his tank.
The Jets right now aren't a good fit for any young QB who is not ready to go right out of the box. They need to take that into consideration as they evaluate QB's in the next year or two. They need a Roethlisberger/Flacco/Ryan type guy who played in something resembling a pro set in college and is fundamentally sound coming out. Then they need to rookie cocoon the guy with a strong running game with lots of underneath passes when the opponents put 8 men in the box and only have 3 guys watching the back nine.
