I've got mixed emotions about thee decision to kick the field goal there. It was obvious we weren't gonna win, so avoiding the shut out was probably the reason. It was all about the optics. Did Bowles get asked about it in the post presser? I'd love to hear his response. Probably some lame-ass answer from a lame-ass coach
There would be no point to asking about the decision in the presser. Everyone knows the answer. It's not that difficult to figure out. "When the fall is all there is, it matters." ~Prince Richard, The Lion In Winter.
An even more curious call was in the second half when Marshall ran a kick back for good yardage. I can't remember the exact yardage but it appeared to be spotted between the 30-35 yard line. The Pats however, were flagged for offsides. Rather than take the 5 yd penalty, he opted to have the Pats rekick the ball. On the next kick Gostkowski kicked toward the corner of the field with the Jets unable to return it past the 15. Not sure what the thinking on that one was?
The coaching was piss poor to not take the 5 yard penalty on top of the run back. We don't often get past the 22 on run backs.
This is precisely the kind of stupid shit that just keeps happening. Our "special teams" have been a disaster all year. Why would anyone consider taking the ball out of the offenses hands and putting it back in theirs? Risking a turnover in the shadow of your own goal line, vs. possession out near the 35-40? Who in the pluperfect hell is making decisions like these? These aren't "decisions," they're wild-ass guesses, hoping for a deus ex machina type miracle to somehow fall on him. Shouldn't an NFL HC understand the situation a little better than this? Because, apparently he doesn't, even after almost two years at the helm. We can't expect to beat other teams until we stop beating ourselves.
I don't remember seeing that play...but it sounds stupid as all get out. And all "get out" is what this coaching staff should consider doing.
I'm usually very critical of bad and dumb coaching decisions but I don't think this one matters much Just trying to avoid a shutout in a game we had zero chance at actually making a comeback in
Just watched this play. Marshall took it out of the end zone to the 27 yard line. On the re-kick he muffed it and got to the 14 yard marker. Fuck it...if the Pats are going to kick our ass then make them work for it.
Guys. It''s not Bowles fault! How's he supposed to be competent when the players suck so bad? The wind wasn't favorable that day. The amount of coffee he drank affected his decision making process. All I know is a likable guy like Todd Bowles CAN'T be blamed. He's just so likable! Give him another year. No give him two... it'll work out, you'll see!
So you agree with his call. Offside happens [before] the kick, hence the rekick. If any violation occurs [during] the [return] phase, then the penalty would be assessed after the play.
I should have said he opted to have the Pats rekick with a 5 yard penalty. This is the rule as per Wikipedia, I can't find the rule in the NFL Rule Book. "If a kicking team player crosses the line at which the ball is placed before it is kicked, the receiving team has the option either to have the kicking team re-kick from 5 yards farther back, or have 5 yards added on to the end of the return."
I applaud Bowles decision. We could have suffered a humiliating 41-0 shutout and no one would have remembered Bowles 'went for it' late in the game. Instead we suffered a 41-3 loss, scoring on the Pats at least once during the game. It's tit-for-tat, but Belicheck would have LOVED LOVED LOVED to shut out his nemesis. Bowles kicking the short FG to deny Belicheck the SO was his way of giving Belicheck the finger. It's like the 27th batter bunting his way on base to break up a perfect game. It is what it is, and Belilcheck has one less feather in his hoodie.
That big three points Bowles laid on Belly so valiantly is like a mosquito bite on an elephant. And way to go by Bowles not to go for an onside kick to show he was put into submission totally so that Belly wouldn't curb stomp his ass anymore.
Wow you're dumb You play to win the game not keep a feather out of someone's cap Embarrassed that you're a fellow fan
