I have to disagree strongly with the first part of this, because Bill Parcells took almost the same exact team and went 9-7 the very next year. In fact, many of the same players were on the 1998 12-4 team, AND many of the guys Kotite drafted ended up being either Pro Bowlers or major staples on the Jets for years to come! The 96 team included the likes of Wayne Chrebet, Keyshawn Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Mo Lewis, Marvin Jones, Victor Green, Otis Smith...The problem wasn't the talent, the problem was the coaching. Kotite was gutless and predictable in his playcalling, and his team had absolutely no discipline to speak of. However, I totally agree with your point that Bowles, like Kotite, did not know how to utilize the talent he had available to him. If this same team went 10-6 last year, there's no excuse for this year. It's not like they've taken a minor step back. If they were going to go 8-8, 7-9, or even 6-10, and were playing generally solid football even when they lose, it would just indicate that they need to upgrade a few positions and iron out some of the kinks. But they're about to go 4-12, with most of the losses being blowouts. That's not a step back; that's a team in turmoil. If Bowles stays on, I wouldn't be surprised to see another 1-15 season next year.
In the last six quarters of football, this Jets team has been outscored 62-6. I'm not even sure we accomplished that feat in the Kotite Era.
so many years of neglecting the OL and now it's time to pay the price. I understand that some years, the talent isn't there to justify a high pick lineman in the draft. But except for projects like Vlad, that's the excuse every GM has thrown out there every fucking year.
yes the similarities are there but at least bowles hasn't referred to his defense as "swarming" to the ball....LOL
kotite was the most useless coach i have ever seen, i remember seeing quite a bit of talent on that team and it proved out over the next few years when they got a real coach. they went from 1-15 to 9-7 to 12-4 coming out of kotite. i actually think this team is worse, they have big money guys not performing at all. they have a linebacker corp that is completely inept and a secondary that is terrible, expensive and old. there arent alot of young guys with big upside on the team. the offense has no qb, no line and no clue. a bunch of above average wrs are not going to win you anything without those other 2 parts. i am now completely convinced that bowles needs to go, i am also very confident that maccagnan needs to go too. i am also completely convinced that the jets owner needs to bring in a real director of football operations or president or whatever you want to call him to handle the FOOTBALL and set the tone, give them an identity and have a real fucking plan for whats going to happen. woody needs to fall off further into the shadows and not ever be seen or heard from. he needs to follow along and only talk about what he is told to talk about.
Hess was a likeable grandfather who didn't know how to run a football organization. Woody is a guy who doesn't know how to run a football organization.
I was talking about this comparison with my Jets fans family last night and we concluded this is worse. Kotite was a horrible coach, but those teams had MORE talent. This roster is horrible. The OL is terrible, there is QB in sight, the WRs are old, there is no TE. The best RB is Powell. The secondary is a mess, the linebackers are pedestrian. The only player on the team who has a future is Williams. One players to build around and he is an interior DL. The 1996 team had Anderson, Chrebet, Coleman, Douglas, Elliott, Glenn, Green, K. Johnson, Marvin Jones, Mo Lewis, Mickens, Murrell. I don't see that talent on this roster. The young players are not good and the players that played well last year are older than dirt. This roster is a mess.
Bingo... you nailed it. I been a fan for 49 years (dam) and I can tell you your right. TB should be fired immediately.
My family had season seats in front of the owners box. When things were bad, as they usually were, fans would turn and frantically flip the finger at Leon Hess. I felt sorry for the old guy.
So the jump from 1-15 to 9-7 in 1997 seems easier to you than the Jets going from 4-12 this year to 9-7/10-6 next year? It's possible. We will see. I thought the roster had more talent than the team has show this year. Maybe I was too optimistic.
He was an incompetent team owner, but I never had any contempt for him. He seemed like a classy guy. My friend was a trainer in a Trump hotel gym and Johnson was a fucking tool, and I can only imagine that he is every other aspect of his life. He threw a dumbbell because he was asked to keep it quiet around a massage room. He threw a childish tantrum and made more noise. This is a quiet hotel gym for residents of Trump Tower who pay $150-$200 for an hour massage. What kind of tool throws a tantrum like that?
Thank God we have the internet to share these doubt free stories. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
Oh STFU! Seriously. I don't have any reason to make up stories about an owner who was already known to be an asshole.
Amongst all these years of failure, Woody has been the one constant contributing to this organization''s failure. Even in the most basic ways his ownership hurts us. We thought hiring two respected GMs to oversee the hiring process would help bring about different results? Not with the same ex-UA boozehound frat boy now a grown elitest incompent at the helm.
Seeing this board's reaction to Bowles, I can only imagine what would have been if the Internet were around in 1996.
Nuclear fallout lol. Actually, I remember it getting really ugly with Joe Walton. The tabloids fanned it. But even before that the players were at odds with some of the media. I remember Richard Todd roughed up Steve Serby. But when the team started losing under Walton it got really ugly towards Walton. I've hated Serby ever since and have maybe read his shit once or twice over all this time. Can't stand some of them. Like violently Lol Did you see them hovering around Sheldon after the game in the locker room like leech's, trying to bait him?
