Whatever you say Mrs. Nugent, I guess I'm just nuts. I would put together the arguements for you, but this topic is just not worth it IMO....
I don't see how one can "work" on kickoffs. Either you have consistent leg power or you don't. We heard much about his offseason conditioning, best shape of his life, yada yada yads. Did that translate to the field? No. He will never have a deep NFL leg, unless of course someone transplants a premier kicker's leg onto Nugent's body. I'm not saying "bust" yet- but certainly a stretch as a 2nd round pick.
Check out Josh Scobe's difference between when he first came in and now. He couldn't kick it past the 15 his first year. Now he is pretty solid at touchbacks. Although, it is a much lower kick which can cause problems.
Give me your counterargument. I would really like to hear what you know. It is apparent you have nothing else to do...so let's hear it. Give me numbers. Not just your conclusions. Compare second year kickers to Nugent. Show me why he will not be any good. Why he is "one of the worst draft picks ever." If you make the statement, back it up.
You need to learn some reading comprehension before I do anything for you. I never made that statement.... :drunk:
Hey I'm holding out hope, as the org. invested alot in the guy. It's simply that thus far, Nugent has shown ZERO to back up the statement that he's our clutch, go-to, deep threat, consistent guy of the future. I hope he is, because finding a decent kicker can sometimes be one of the hardest things for a GM.
I agree. He hasn't shown anything in the Jets uni. I've just followed him for so long that I know his potential. Hopefully his attempts go up and everyone will get a chance to see it.
Yah my Securities professor just said the same thing about my reading comprehension...and about my temper. But seriously, Mrs. Nugent? I already explained to you (i believe it was you) that i'm a fan of his and know a lot about kicking. Therefore, I mainly post about him. I thought that was the point. Post where you can add something. That's what I'm trying to do
So why go look for another one right now? To be fair, people spend a lot of time analyzing his kickoffs because he's yet to be in a big spot in his career with the Jets. The only game-on-the-line FG attempt I remember him having was the SNF game vs the Saints last year. It was a very long kick which was straight but just a bit short, going into the wind. It was a rather meaningless game that at the time we were probably better off losing, so I don't know if you even worry about that. It's not like he shanked an easy game winner at any time since he's been here. The few misses he's had haven't mattered.
I'm not saying to go look for another kicker now. But in my book, misses are misses. If you are blowing the ones that don't count for anything, I'm worried as to what you can do when the game is really on the line...
Nugent is on the downside of ordinary. He's about as ordinary as I've ever seen as a kicker. Hall was light years ahead of him, even while being as inconsistent as he is. Hermway couldn't pick players if their lives depended on it.
The bottom line is that Nugent has not lived up to his billing. To spend a second round pick on a kicker, he better be one of the best in the league--and what Nugent has shown is that he's very average. Granted the guy hasn't had many opportunites in his short time here, and he deserves more time to prove himself, but it is hard to be impressed with what he's shown thus far. I for one thought he had a stronger leg...
He could have kicked a million game winners at Ohio State from over 50 yards on the final play of every game in the snow...thus far that has translated into a below average NFL kicker. His college career has no bearing on his NFL one. Just ask half of the heisman trophy winners that never panned out in the Pro's.
I can't even be confident with Nugent on 35 yard FGs, that's sad, much less 50. Let him sink a big kick and slowly we'll start to come around...We can handle his kickoff problems if he keeps making kicks.
Nugent has potential, but has not earned his stripes yet. He will have his chance this year. There will be a big game when it is all riding on his leg and he will have to come through. Unfortunately, that is how place kickers are judged by how they come through in a tight spot. With regard to John Hall. He had a strong leg, but he would give me the heebie geebies when he kicked. He missed a fair amount of makable field goals and some misses cost us wins. O'Brien. Not bad. He was made a scapegoat by Edwards, like what Edwards has done with everyone who surrounds him.
He still has to make one of the two kicks, Herm or no Herm. You don't get many second chances in life, he got one. Jeremy Ito from Rutgers got a second chance and made the most of it. Brien cost us the Giants game in 2003 also, not paying attention to when the ball is snapped in OT. How many plays is he in there that he can't pay attention?
Brien also kicked over 80 percent in Giants Stadium, which is beyond terrific. And the week before he cost us the Pittsburgh game(it wasn't Doug Brien who called a kneel down to cost us a few yards) he won us the San Diego game. He could never come back, but the fan reaction was completely irrational. That game wouldn't have put us in the Super Bowl. Instead, we'd have had to beat a New England team that raped us that year. -X-
