Would you rather have one sure fire stud that will make opposing QB's wet their pants for the next ten years or pick seven guys, have three of them end up being duds, and fill four holes with one solid starter and three borderline scrubs?
It doesn't have to be those two extremes. In your first post in this thread you admit that this isn't the year to trade up and that we probably need to trade down. You can't have it both ways. If we got Garret, I'd be excited, but with Bowles as HC, what good would it do? If we trade up for Garrett, it would mean we could probably forget about fixing the LT spot unless we sign a FA, and we'd have a parade of injured QBs next season, so it wouldn't matter what Garrett did on D, the offense wouldn't be able to score any points. Garrett would have to get a bunch of strip sacks that he returned for TDs in order for the Jets to win.
I am fairly certain that our pick (5-8?) is not the one we should be using. Sure we can get a nice starter at RB, CB, etc. but I really don't see anyone available at our potential spot that is light years better than anyone we could get in the 20-27 range towards the end of round one. Ironically, trading up for Garret seems to be the safest route with the lowest floor. Sure there are other pass rushers in round one but most have far less upside and the guy I like later seems to be a boom or bust prospect. While I don't see us getting our much needed LT in this draft I do think we might find a pro bowl caliber interior lineman in round 2-4. If we rebuild our defense and Petty continues to play well that may be enough for now. Trading down gives us more picks and more opportunities to find good / great players but looking at our drafts the last four or five years how often can we get a guy that is not only BAP and fills one of our greatest needs? We can always trade down next year or even use players or picks this year to get more picks in the 2018 draft. Building this team into a winner will take more than one off-season. Right now we are pretty bad on both sides of the ball with the lowest ranked special teams in the entire league. There might be four or five college teams with better special teams than us. When I started this thread the idea seemed a little crazy but the more we hash this out the more I am coming around to think that this is what we need to do.
tell u folks if they did get their hands on garrett it immediately bolsters our LB group going into next year. lee and jenkins are good players that will no doubt improve going into next year. Garnish them with garrett and u have a potentially dynamic group.
If the Jets were to ever trade up, I would rather see them do it with their 2nd round pick to move back into the first. Use Sheldon as a trade chip. It's worth noting the offensive line class is REALLY bad. Ryan Ramczyk is getting hip surgery at the end of the season, will keep him out of the combine. Cam Robinson might be a guard at the next level. If you really want to take a chance, Ramczyk should be there in the 2nd as damaged goods. I don't believe in trading up unless it's the final piece and we need a lot of pieces. We can rebuild most of the secondary in this draft I believe, and just get good football players that play hard and compete. Big roster changes are coming. Not the time to trade up.
Would love Garrett but no way he gets past 2 overall. ... Unless a video of him doing a gas mask bong hit surfaces on Draft day.
I'm starting to really like the idea of Derek Barnett in the first round. I know some look at the weight and think Quinton Coples at outside linebacker but if you take a look at his body of work, he has no problem getting around the edge and has a relentless motor. He's also been an incredibly consistent player throughout his college career. Could be our Terrell Suggs. I also think Barnett could be an argument against trading up for Garrett. Whether they become good players or not, I just hate the idea of spending a top 10 pick on a cornerback. I just feel like cornerbacks are the last pieces you add, although it could be argued that with our youthful box they would be the last piece.
Takkarist Mckinley from UCLA has also been a name I've been hearing about a lot of as late. http://draftbreakdown.com/video/takkarist-mckinley-vs-utah-2016/ --- This guy has some good pass-rushing moves and he's got a good motor. The Utah game above, he kills it. I think this guy is a matchup nightmare where you can line him up everywhere. Barnett looks like a great prospect as well. I'll need to watch more on him on draftbreakdown. We can get an impact player right at #6 if we stand pat. I would personally like an edge rusher with the pick, then look at OT / CB in the 2nd to 4th rounds. Have to come away with a CB in this draft and early too because this is a deep draft. I don't want to trade up right away though, maybe to get back into the first. But easily, give me the edge rusher ... there are 3 or 4 of them that will be taken in the top 15 picks
