If anything this should probably be the draft where we trade down. With that being said many of the mocks I have seen have us drafting a CB, a RB, or a major project in Jabril Peppers at # 5 or 6. God knows the last thing we need is to blow the pick on a QB. The guy that would make the most impact for us at a major position of need and is arguably the best player in the draft is DE / OLB Myles Garret. It won't be cheap moving up anywhere from our spot to #1-4 for Garret. While we have lots of holes to fill just imagine how effective our front seven could be with Garret rushing the passer from the blind side. The defense can't double team everyone. Thoughts?
Garrett is the one player I'd most love to see the Jets get, but of course they won't. I agree that he would make a greater impact on the team's fortunes than any other player. I'd love to add Fournette, and think he would definitely help the team a lot. The problem is, even as great as our need is for a pass-rushing OLB, our greatest need is at LT, and unless something changes dramatically between now and the draft, there won't be an OT worthy of being taken with the #6 pick. I haven't seen enough of Ramczyk to know if he is really worth passing up on Fournette and trading down for, IF the Jets can find a team willing to trade up. I'm not that high on Cam Robinson or know if he will be worth it. Of course the Jets could sign a FA like Whitworth as a stopgap for a season or two, and draft an LT next season. All I know is that if the Jets fail to sign a FA LT, then they HAVE to draft an LT that can protect Petty's (or whomever is their starting QB next season) blindside.
Can't reach for a need, not even a left tackle. If our guy is not there in this draft we take the BAP and get our left tackle next year.
I'm not saying that we should reach. I said we should trade down. BAP won't do a damn bit of good, if our QBs are getting killed because we don't have anyone who can play LT better than Ijalana.
Hes 270 lbs and listed as a DE, sounds like another Coples. I really think if they draft another DE no matter where they plan on playing him, I will quit being a Jets fan.
Well, get prepared to quit. It's changing as more and more college teams play a 3-4 D alignment, but still a large number of the 3-4 OLBs in the NFL were DEs in college. The Jets need quality pass rushers, which more than likely means they will be drafting a DE at some point.
You know who trades up? Winners trade up. The Falcons traded up for Julio Jones and have reaped the rewards. The Jets traded up for Revis and came back to trade up for Harris in the same draft. The result, two consecutive AFC Championship games. The Jets also traded up for Sean Ellis. The result was an AFC Championship game against Elway's Broncos. Giants appeared to overpay by trading Rivers for Manning. The result, two Superbowl wins. When the Jets traded down in 1997, the Rams used the Jet's first overall pick on Orlando Pace. The result was a SB victory for the greatest show on turf.
It does not matter who they select, I'm convinced that this CS is garbage. They will find a way to screw up any pick they take. They will not scheme correctly, they will not develope correctly. Mac is going to draft OL in the 3rd round and hope they will be good in a couple of seasons. TB will bench Myles Garret because he will want his four defensive linemen in the game and Garret will be sitting next to Lorenzo Mauldin, wondering why they are only getting 15 plays a game.
Im all for trading up in the right situation but this is not the time. This team has holes everywhere and if we are serious about rebuilding then we need as many picks as possible
hey man i'm with you for the most part......BUT the heat is turned up on the team that moves up because they HAVE TO hit the lottery and draft an all-star. Considering how much the NFL draft is a crapshoot, some GM's think they have a statistical advantage drafting higher in each round, despite having fewer total picks after moving up. Conversely, some view that having more than 7 picks gives them the statistical edge. You can find draft data to support each approach so it really comes to team philosophy. i will say the overall depth on the jets appears to be better (except OL and secondary) so i wouldn't be totally opposed to having fewer picks this upcoming draft as long we hit the jackpot at a given position.
I would be fine with trading up for Garrett. He's an athletic freak, incredibly skilled, and he's a hard worker. You rarely get a combination of all 3 of these in a prospect. There are some other good 3-4 OLB's in this draft (Williams and Mckinley) and we could always take a top talent at CB, but I wouldn't be opposed to trading up for Garrett.
You get no argument at all from me, Red. I agree with you. In reality, if Bowles and his staff aren't fired, then it won't matter to me who the Jets sign in FA or take in the draft, because I will be through following them. I will find something else to which to devote my time and energies.
C'mon Hasty. You know as well as I the ton of holes this team has due to Idzik's blown picks and all the trading up and missed picks during Tanny's reign of error. As much as I would love to add Garrett to this team, plain and simply, the Jets cannot afford to trade up. If anything, they need to trade down. I will say that Garrett added to our front 7 would make our D a lot better and make our secondary better, but that isn't going to protect our starting QB's blind side or open holes for our RBs.
