It's unfair to judge a second round QB based on a couple of preseason games. Why are we writing this kid off already like he's the next Ryan Leaf? He has all the physical and mental tools to play QB at a high level in the NFL, it's just a matter of getting him in the right system with actual pass protection. Hack has a better shot of being our QB of the future than Petty does that's for sure.
Belichick, Jerry Jones and Hue Jackson were all in on Hackenberg prior to us picking him from reports. He was picked in a great spot and is being afforded an opportunity to have things slow down and he can start fresh this coming off-season. Why throw him away after 1 or 2 years, why not give guys a chance to make mistakes, learn and grow and if it doesn't work out then you move on.
I dont think there gunna draft another QB. If they did, Itwould be crazy if he was another developmental project cause that would be 2 QBs on the roster that won't play assuming hack won't be ready next year. So they would have to sign a vet to compete with petty and roll with 4 QBS again. Or if they drafted A QB they think could start right away to compete with petty and leave Hack out to dry and probly kill his confidence.
based on what? Draft position? Petty was much better in college, no comparison there. At least Petty was allowed by our staff to play, Hack was sent straight to clip board duty, rightly so. There is nothing that indicates that Hack will ever play a down, where as Petty playing with a crap line at least shows he will be on this team next season. Hack was a mistake, a high draft pick mistake. Hell, Penn St., even prospered after his exit. He has a nice arm, I will give him that. He sure isn't a cerebral QB, that is for sure. His accuracy blows chunks, and has since his first year at Penn St. The only reason Mac drafted this project was to try to pressure Fitz. It sure wasn't to be the QB of the future, if so maybe we will see him on the field in 2025 right before he retires. What a joke
It would be a truly terrible move for the Jets to draft a QB this year. Did you watch the last few games? We have no offensive line. The dumbest thing we could do is draft a rookie qb with our first pick just to watch him get battered and destroyed like Petty did last week. We should spend our entire draft on offensive linemen and defensive backs.

There is no consensus elite QB coming out this year, no "Can't miss" (as if THAT is ever really true) guys, so there is no guarantee that anyone the Jets drafted at QB would be better than Petty, or even Hackenburg, so it doesn't make sense for them to draft a QB in the 1st three rounds, and after that, why waste a pick on a very questionable player? So the most likely thing to happen is the Jets will draft a QB. After watching the Miami game it's blindingly clear that they have to fix their OL and secondary, and everything else takes a backseat to that. I was a big Fournette guy, but he's a luxury they can't afford until they get an OL that can block, and a secondary that can actually defend passes from a journeyman QB at least. The good news is that they could probably trade down and get some extra picks AND get quality players in areas of need...assuming their GM knows what he's doing, and the jury's out on that point. And of course they need to fire Bowles and the CS and get people who are competent and know how to coach in the NFL. Other than that, the Jets are in fine shape!
You know I find it kind of funny how everybody is trying to anoint Petty as the future of this team. What has he done over his 3 starts and 2nd half vs the Colts to warrant that? He turns the ball over at an alarming rate. His completion percentage is so high because he dumps the ball off to the back half the time. He's had 2 or 3 nice drives in his 3 starts and that's it. Nothing to warrant him being anointed future of the Jets. Believe me, I really want to see him succeed. He has great drive and character and that's something I value the most in players but I just don't see it happening.
Totally on board with building in the trenches. Having that offensive line up front makes everything else on offense so much easier. I don't really want to see us draft secondary again. I truly believe the biggest weakness in our secondary is the scheme itself.
I didn't want Revis part 2. I was done with him after the injury and he moved on. Wilk, I was unsure. I figured when we drafted Leonard, Wilk was done here. Would have been cap friendly, now it isn't.
Yet you have faith in Hack? Who has throwing mechanic problems, and he is suppose to be a professional with this type of problem? Throwing mechanic problems are harder to fix at this point in his career than anything. It will probably be his demise based on accuracy issues. When you see Hack play, it may be the Arena league.
This entire argument just solidifies the NFL's need for a developmental league. If it existed, Hack and Petty both should have spent time there instead of on the Jet bench clipboarding. Perhaps we could groom some linesmen and cb's too. Why the NFL doesn't take this route rather than the money grab that was NFLE is beyond reasoning..
I know scouts in the NFL who had him as an undraftable prospect. From what I read the Jets scouts weren't nearly as hot for him as the GM. Hackenberg is exactly the type of guy that attracts people who don't understand the position.
