I think he can he can play corner or safety and he would be an instant upgrade as a kick returner. The young man has excelled on every level of football offensively and defensively. ..he may be a playmaker we shouldnt pass over.
Honestly, I'm worried about drafting somebody like that. Extremely athletic but has he really developed a single area of strength? Does he have the mental strength and discipline to take his athletic skills to the top of the NFL? Lots of guys who do well in college purely on athletic ability flame out in the NFL. Could be a jack of all trades but master of none. He's certainly exciting to watch though and who knows, he might be elite. Gotta be sure though...
Other than PR and KOR, I'm not sure he has a position. No, I don't want him at all. IMO you don't take a player that high who doesn't have a position. Even if he can play CB or S, his ball skills don't seem to have translated to those positions, as he only has one interception. I'll take a pass.
I share the same view. He could be the Next Great Thing, or he could be a flame out like you say. For this reason, I wouldn't take him with the first pick they have. But, if he falls to them in the second round, maybe? They have greater needs though, even though the secondary is one of those, it's not clear what position he would play so it makes him a crap shoot. I see him going to a team that doesn't have any glaring needs, so probably lower down in Round 1.
He's a cover 3 in the box strong safety in the mold of Kam Chancellor IMO. Keep him in position to always be coming forward to make plays rather than moving backwards. I didn't see Adrian Wilson in college but he reminds me a lot of him as a pro. He could also be a weakside Tampa-2 linebacker but even then he'd have to put on some weight and strength, although that's an inevitability once in an NFL training program. In short, no. I don't want him. We have our hybrid player in Darron Lee, and our in the box only strong safety in Calvin Pryor. He'd be a massive waste of a draft pick, and doesn't fill the need of pass rusher or exterior coverage guy. Harbaugh uses him in a position to play a rover zone and fly to the ball. He hasn't demonstrated the ability to cover man to man very affectively but we can't say for sure he can't cover tightends or runningbacks. I would say he has no shot at playing corner in the NFL outside of spot duty on slot receivers. Edit: To add-on, players like him generally don't bust in the NFL assuming a team finds the correct position. He's just not a luxury this team can afford. I think he'd do best on the Titans, Bengals, or Ravens.
He projects much better as a Safety at the next level than a CB. He's a very good all-around player but he really doesn't do any one thing overly well. A very solid kid and a physical specimen but I'd rather the Jets go in a different direction with their first round pick.
Peppers will probably play as a box safety in the NFL and be a team's primary return man. I think he is going to be overdrafted and isn't a player the Jets should consider in the top 10.
Ive read some great responses. Although i am biased i must agree that he is not a first round need. He is definitely a first round talent and if by some reason he is available in tbe 2nd i think we should take him. Didnt Devin Hester prove his worth for years?
Drafting a KR/PR in the first or even early second is a waste of the pick. One of many examples: Ted Ginn. JV mentioned Kam Chancellor, but depending on his ball instincts there is a much more intriguing comp to me - Earl Thomas. Peppers may have the speed to be an _elite_ free safety who can take away the back third of the field. That sort of player can be worth a high pick. BUT, the coaching staff has to really work hard to project him as that sort of player with really strong instincts. It's too risky for my blood, but if that's how they grade him out then maybe.
Devin Hester more than proved his worth. The main difference is that he was drafted by the Bears who were coming off an 11 win season, not a team with tons of holes to fill like the Jets. He added a dimension to an already good team that didn't need him to step in immediately to play CB the way the Jets will eventually need their 2nd round pick to perform.
Hell no, kids overrated. I'd take both of michigans corners before I'd take peppers. I know a lot of Michigan fans and they agree. He's athletic but highly overrated and definitely not worth a top ten pick
CP is poor in coverage. ..but i love him in the run game. I don see jabrill as a Ss...i see him as a Fs due to his amazing speed. He can play both but to maintain youth and talent i would like him to play Fs if we drafted him.
How did he end up top 5 in Heisman voting? Wow...he's been one of the best if not the best player on the field since he played pop warner. Now all of a sudden hes overrated. ..lol.
