Coincidentally, Jets fans tempered their praise of Bowles, knowing the second year head coach still has a long way to go. They listed areas where they'd like to see improvement over the last three games:

Better command of the offense. Better command on the clock. Better game management.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this kid handles himself against division foes.
We may not be playing for a post season spot but these divisional games are a different atmosphere no matter what the records of the teams.

What i'm looking for out of the kid is seeing him get more comfortable with each game and having better understanding and command of the offense.
Win or lose doesn't matter , just make better reads, look off defenders and understand when to throw the ball away and move on to the next down. Show that you are learning and growing with each game and give us reason to think you'll be in competition for the starting gig next season.

The post was about Petty and what he could bring to Jets as a Qb not about the D and ST which are separate issues

hhhhmmmmmm... interesting. there were a handful of plays in the second half against the niners that did remind me of the favre style. once things slow for petty, i can envision his game to mirror favre.

hopefully the football gods allow the results to mirror favre as well.

Very true. Not only that, but I didn't see much pocket awareness in him. Never saw him step up into the pocket. He was at his best when moving outside the pocket. Not sure how this will translate going forward. I'm sure D coordinators are taking notes as well.

Read the article I linked to above. It tells a different story about Petty's pocket awareness (in situations.) The point is, he shows some pocket awareness and ability to look beyond his first read. The question is how much that can be developed.

It looks like Petty can play the notes, size, arm-strength, mobility and toughness, we will see if he can make music. Hope he gets a long look and the club uses free agency and the draft to help him. That's how you win in today's NFL.

He'll move on to other reads but I definitely seen what you're talking about multiple times.

It's definitely a problem if it doesn't get fixed. Question...Is it not possible that this is in large part due to nervousness and lack of experience? If so, that should go away with more playing time and experience, as he grows in confidence and feels more comfortable on the field.

Petty has very similar skills to Geno. They're much closer to each other in terms of what they bring to the table than they are to any other QB's the Jets have put on the field in decades now.

They're QB's from a college Option offense that can't read a complex layered defense. They go to their first read most of the time and this is where their successes mostly come. They both have strong arms but are not all that accurate down the field. They both put a lot of balls up for grabs and rely on their receiver to win the battle. They're both very mobile and capable of breaking a tackle.

The difference between what we saw out of Geno and what we're seeing out of Petty so far is that Geno was more willing to throw the ball under pressure instead of hanging on to it. This caused more Int's down the field and fewer sacks. Petty is more willing to go straight from his first read to the outlet under the defense. This means fewer completions down the field overall but a better chance to keep the drive alive. Except when he's on 2nd and 18 because of another sack and so now we're looking at 3rd and 11.
