It may be a cap, but it's still a lot of money: Jared Goff, 1st round pick, contract= 27.93 million Christian Hackenberg, 2nd round pick, contract = 4.66 million When a team invests that much money in a player they have to be committed to him for four years. A second round player like Hackenberg, not so much.
Disagree. Romo gets hurt on plays that he is barely touched. He has no flexibility and gets twisted and turned the wrong way. We have two young, talented QBs. No way do you disregard the young guys. That's pretty much the only way you can have sustained success in this league, by bringing up a young QB. And no, no-one has a clue on how good they are going to be yet.
Take all this QB talk, money, draft pics, trades, whatever, and dump it into the O-Line. Our QB situation improves overnight, regardless of who we stick back there. On a side note, the 'window' may already be closed on our vets, who are aging out pretty fast. D'Brick, Mangold, Revis, Harris, Marshall. Maybe it really is time to go youth and start over. Start Petty/Hack. Start the young WRs. Keep drafting young talent and start them year 1. Maybe it's time.
They may not have to be committed to him because of his smaller contract, but with a player like Hack who has prototypical size, a cannon for an arm, is smart and can read Ds, imo the Jets would be stupid to not give him every opportunity to succeed, or just as much as they would if he was a first round pick. If he can fix his fundmentals/accuracy, he could be the true franchise QB they've been looking for. The same basically goes for Petty even though he was just a 4th round pick. Good size, great arm, great character, great work ethic, just has to learn to read Ds better. He'd have 4 less years than Hack (give or take a year), but could be every bit as good.
I don't think its only about the money though, its the allocation of draft resources. If we draft a QB in the first round, then you have essentially wasted a second round pick whilst also not even giving that player the time to develop. I understand both sides though but I wonder if this QB class is worth it. Unfortunately, they've already began on the path of NOT giving him every opportunity to succeed because Bowles insisted on sticking with a 33 year old Ryan Fitzpatrick who is the epitomy of garbage. Even now, why would the coaching staff not bump Hack up to 2nd string??? Let him take the reps instead of Fitz. I just feel like the Jets have screwed this whole thing up so badly, and thinking Fitz was the best bridge QB to Petty or Hack was an asinine decision made by Macc which to me stands as the worst decision he's made thus far (and the Wilkerson contract).
I agree, and on one hand don't want the Jets to draft a QB in the 2017 draft. OTOH, if Mac has realized that taking Hack was a mistake and he doesn't believe in Petty, then he probably should take one. That said, if Mac has made that many mistakes at the QB position (including Fitz), I'm not sure I'd trust his judgment to take another. I really think that the Jets should roll with Petty and Hack next year. If they want to bring in a Hoyer, Foles or Glennon to compete, that's fine, but it should be a competition, and all 3 should be given the opportunity in OTAs and mini-camps, then the best two duel it out in TC for the starting spot. I definitely agree that Bowles has screwed the pooch. That's one reason he has to go. I hope Mac was NOT in agreement with how Bowles has handled the QB situation, but just couldn't do anything about it due to the org chart that Woody set up.
Agreed. I think there should be a competition between Hack Petty and a free agent pick up or a middle to late round QB draft pick. The only way around that is if they see Petty through these 4 games and decide that he's not the answer. They would cut him and then maybe pick up a free agent and a somewhat higher draft pick. Either ways, the whole thing is incredibly screwed up because the jets insist on red shirting Hack, which is fine, but is he supposed to be a 2 year red shirt? Do they realize that mechanics take awhile to learn and repeat? Like I've mentioned in another thread, the mental aspect is not something anyone is concerned about with Hack, kid will be fine in that department, I worry about mechanics and having a good o-line to protect him. I hope the jets spearhead these issues with a lot of focus this offseason. I hope Hack takes it upon himself to work out with Carson Palmer's brother to work out the kinks of the mechanics. He worked with him prior to the draft, and I think that continuity will do him wonders. If only there was a developmental league then this wouldn't really be a problem.
Even if they don't think Petty is the answer as their starter, they wouldn't necessarily cut him. He knows the offense and surely would be ready to be the backup next season, if not challenge for the starting spot. He's under contract and cheap. I see no reason that they would cut him, especially since they didn't cut Geno this past season under similar circumstances. I truly don't think the Jets will draft a QB in 2017. I think they will look to sign a younger vet like Glennon, Foles or Hoyer to compete with Petty and Hack. I can't imagine their going with Petty, Hack and a draft pick even if they were certain that Petty would be starting next season.
The 2017 QB Situation is Simply This: 1. Bryce Petty 2. Christian Hackenberg 3. Free Agent QB (More of a Glennon Type than a Romo/Cutler Type) 4. Late Round QB/UDFA QB (Camp Fodder) Those 4 enter camp, a true 3-Way QB Battle takes place, Winner starts 2017 season. Preferably Hackenberg or Petty.
I tend to agree but the keeping 4 QB's to start the season was a bit of a head scratcher. I hope Petty shows enough in these next 4 games.
I'd be both very surprised and very disappointed if the Jets have 4 QBs again next season. It would divide the reps too much. Petty and Hack will need all the reps they can get, and if the Jets have added a FA QB, he will need a lot of reps as well to learn the offense. I think (and hope!) that Petty will be the starter. Because it can take time to change mechanics/fundamentals (if ever), I think the FA would probably wind up being the back up and Hack would be the #3, but would love it if Hack was the #2. That would be ideal. It would mean that the Jets have two good young QBs.
4 wouldn't make the team. That is why I labeled them Camp Fodder. Haha. Yes, ideal would definitely be Petty or Hack stepping up as the starter. Which means the Jets will sign Cutler to a 5 year deal.
I'm not sure the Jets would even take 4 QBs to TC. They might need it to prevent the QBs from getting tired arms, but rep-wise at least, I think they'd be better off with only 3.
