Fitz was handled perfectly from Mac's end. Didn't pay too much. Didn't give him a long term deal and like you said: Nobody better was available. A Jets fan could argue they could have seen what Geno had from the start of the season, then move to Petty, Hack etc, but I disagree. I like the move he made. It did not work, but it was right.
It never occurred to me that it was Bowles that caused Macc to cave with Fitzpatrick but now that you mention it, it very well could've been. If the guy seemingly refused to play anyone else through Fitzpatrick's disaster, he certainly might've been the advocate to bring him back
Sticking with the initial 8 mil offer, and using the rest on a new RT....... and if he balks, use that 8 mil on another O-lineman and roll the dice with glassjaw McGraw
Starting Geno Smith at QB. The rest of the cash could've went to whatever the hell you wanted. 3 of it could've went to Hoyer as insurance.
Two choices 1.Fire Bowles and let Mac hire the next coach..in which case we get a recycled HC with no managerial aspirations or another coordinator-1st time HC 2. Blow it up - Fire Bowles & Mac - and bring in a big name, (as if that person currently exists) who has complete control IMO this season is not on Mac. The team always comes out flat and that goes back to last year. Defense is underperforming big time and Fitzpatrick truly sucks. Although the drafts can't be evaluated very highly, at least at this point. Might be worth letting Mac pick a coach to see what happens

Because Macc isn't responsible for Bowles' inability to adjust to bad play, and this dating back to as early as Week 3 against KC.
These 2 are not joined at the hip, IMO. Mac had no choice if he wanted to be the GM to not accept Bowles as HC. Casserly and Wolfe were conducting a parallel interview process and that's how things ended up where they are today. BIG mistake. Get the buffoon off the sidelines and get a coach in here that reports to the GM. The coach and GM have to have both a short-term as well as long-term view for the team...
Do you mean that he was prepared to dump the season? Fitz was the average QB he had always been. Expecting a different result against that early schedule was silly. They got nothing out of this year. At the moment they have less direction than any Jet teams since the mid seventies. Geno and Petty could not have done worse. Allowing players and the media to run the show is a recipe for disaster. Who is really in charge?
Roster isn't the problem. Coaching, poor gameplanning, poor clock management, and players who don't give a shit are. I like. I really don't like Bowles at this point. I'm convinced his roster did the work when he was with the Cardinals, because his scheme is shit.
Mac inherited a crappy roster and has only had two off-seasons to fix it. He has found some good young WRs in round six, seven, and UFA as well as steeling Marshall and Forte from the Bears. He should have played hard ball with Fitz and Wilkerson but no one is perfect. Bowles on the other hand has had week after week to motivate this motley crew and failed miserably.
Again, you aren't talking about a long-term contract. That money would have gone towards this year. Other than QB, what other perceived holes did this team have at the START of the season?!?!
RT Offensive line depth RB Depth CB Depth [Dee situation, Revis surgery] There were ways to improve the football team
I don't recall any of these being spoken about heavily at the part of the season. No one was ready to give up on Revis (yet), and everyone envisioned Bilal Powell being utilized more than he is now.
Breno is trash dude, many wanted him cut from the team. No one knew what we had in the other RTs. Revis was coming off surgery, and we still needed another bruiser and a lot of us wanted Karlos Williams on the roster as well. This was all talked about before we resigned Fitz.
Bowles has to go, there is no question about this. While I would prefer to give Mac more time I have no problem with him getting pushed out the door if that's what it takes to give our new head coach every chance to succeed. This team needs a rebuild and a new head coach (preferably an offensive minded coach) is the first step.
