I think it would be absolutely counterproductive to release Maccagnan at this point in time. This season should be a kick in the ass. They are definitely hearing the grumblings of the fan base and hopefully it will be a sense of urgency for them to "get it right".
Mac's free agent signings have been fine. Most anyone you ask would say that on paper the team has enough talent to win. Folks were positively giddy in August. But the coaching staff hasnt done enough game prep, and their in game adjustments are non existent. Boles should go. Let Mac pick the new coach.
Possibly. I just think that there is a HUGE difference between Idzik and MacCagnan. There was a universal acceptance/understanding of most of the moves that MacCagnan made, versus the universal "WTF?!?!" that was heard when Idzik ran the show.
To be fair, Mac was allowed to spend the money to build the team while Idzik was hamstrung. But Mac brought in contributing vets (Marshall, Forte), had a few misses (Clady) but there were no head scratchers. And most importantly, he didn't put them in cap hell. The Jets can purge the roster in the offseason and have a HUGE amount of cap space to work with.
I don't agree that Idzik was hamstrung. The only thing he was hamstrung by was his obsession to see Rex Ryan fired, which ultimately led to his own dismissal.
I dont want the team to be in a similar situation that they were in with Rex and Idzik. What if they suck again next year? Do you fire Mac and keep the coach? Doesnt seem fair to can a coach after one season. But if they're bad again, obviously Mac is gone. Personally I'm sticking with both one more year. If the team sucks again, you tear it down again and start over.
This team is falling apart, the defense lacks effort and the offense is onto their 3rd QB. @San Fran (short week) Vs. Dolphins, @ New England, Vs. Buffalo. It is very possible they lose all 4 of those. suppose they do - they finish the year losing 8 games in a row with some embarrassing games mixed in there. Do you still believe they should bring back both Macc and Bowles to see how they perform next year?
Honestly, the last 4 games wont change anything for me. Clearly they are a crap team, with crap players, who dont care about their job. Hell, losing the last 4 games could be the best thing possible for the franchise. If they want to clean house at the end of the season, I suppose I'd understand it. But I think if you go down that route, both need to be let go. I dont want to go into the offseason having to force a HC on a GM, or vice versa. I'd be ok with cleaning house, bringing in two guys with a correct Org structure, and rolling with that. I'd also be ok with keeping them both one more year. Giving them a chance to right the ship, and blowing it up at the end of the year if they fail.
No one, and I mean no one, could have envisioned the collective shit storm most of the free agent signings have become. Revis was expected to decline, but not to this degree. Marshall has had a bad year but look who's been throwing him the ball. Clady was always a risk and that risk unfortunately did not pay off. Forte has been solid, I actually think the coaches have used him far too much. I think Powell should have really been featured more throughout the season. McLendon has been a good run stuffer, run stuffing is not a weakness on this team. Gilchrist has regressed to his career average which is pretty mediocre. Skrine is strictly a slot corner, anything more and you're asking for trouble. I think 3-9 will make everyone look terrible. Point is, Macc has acquired some good talent, it's up to the coaches to make good use of that talent. Can't say Bowles has maximized the talent on this team.
It's simple - if you want to be a monkey organization like the Browns, you fire GMs every two seasons. If you are a legit franchise with a long term plan, you need to give a GM five years minimum
NFL football is based on offense. That's why a team with an average QB rarely goes far. It's like hiring a coach for an NBA team that doesn't believe in the 3 pt. shot. How can you have an offense that doesn't employ a tight end at all.?
Keep Mike Maccagnan and if the Jets fire Bowles, they must then hire a proven commodity with NFL head coach experience. I would be on board with hiring Mike McCarthy if Green Bay parts with him for a "new voice" the way Philly did with Andy Reid.
I think there was actually a lot of people saying Fitzpatrick was a fluke last year. Questioning whether istwas the right idea to give all that money to Revis, saying that Clady was injury prone, Gilchrist kinda sucked in San Diego, etc. I don't believe for one second that bad things coming out of Macc's moves could not have been forecasted
The Fitzpatrick turning into a dumpster fire was obvious. I was adamant that I did not want him back, especially after the long, drawn out, and embarassing contract stalemate. Very few QB's who have had mediocre careers, suddenly turn it on at 32-33 and become legitimate franchise QB's. The clady thing was risky for injury, no one thought revis was going to as bad as he is. Gilchrist was mediocre in SD, he had good and bad years....what I get out of all of this though is that teams who don't draft well and think they can balance a rebuild and winning usually end up screwed. Jets wanted to balance rebuilding and being competitive, what we have now is a team with a bunch of question marks surrounding it. I anticipate the 2017 jets to look very different, coaching personnel and players will be very different.
Easy. "Hey, Todd, so . . . listen . . . "Hey Macc, I'm giving you another draft and a chance to pick your own coach. Assemble a list." This notion that GMs and head coaches should only be fired or hired together has always been silly to me.
I completely agree with this. I also voiced the sentiment that I wasn't crazy about bringing Fitz back because I didn't trust his career year last year to be a reliable indication of his future performance. To me, that was easily Macc's biggest mistake.
Agreed. It's amazing how well a defense can play with a lead and time to rest between changes of possession. When your offense is 3 and out, your defense has no shot at pulling all the weight.
Relatively happy with what Mac has done For all those whining about re-signing Fitz - who was the top tier free agent QB we failed to land instead? I forget can you just remind me?
Including a big chunk of this board, and to be honest, I think Mac did as well, hence the initial 1year / 8mil offer that he tried to stand by all summer. I'm wondering where the outside pressure / demands came from that pushed him to reneg. From what we've seen this season, it wouldnt surprise me if it was Bowles wanting him back.
