Jets have gone the coordinator route for far too long, and the defensive coordinator route to be more specific: Coaching Options for 2017: Kyle Shanahan - young offensive mind who is probably the only exception to the avoiding coordinators with no HC experience. Todd Haley - has prior HC experience but he has done a good job with the Steelers Tom Coughlin - Old and has a history with cross town rivals, but the dude will run a tight ship and I don't really care about what he did with the Giants. I want to win. He would provide discipline and a clear cut approach towards progressing and making the team formidable. Jim Harbaugh - probably a 99.9% chance this doesn't happen but I would throw 20 million at him and tell him he could have full control of football operations, coaching, everything. He would re-energize the fanbase and would give a much better optic towards making the Jets a formidable franchise. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to continue to post them. I can't fathom seeing Bowles and the rest of the coaching staff back next year.
I think the main problem here starts organizationally. This franchise lacks a clear vision as to who they are and what kind of team they want to be. Rex tried that with his "ground and pound" philosphy but that really didn't work in a league where points are at a premium. What is needed is a true face of the organization. Not Woody's face either. Neil Glat should not be "Team President" when all he does is business related. They need a President of Football Operations and he should be second only to Woody. Below that, a clear cut CoC where the GM reports to the Team President but handles the overall personnel profiles. He should also be the one hiring the HC and all of this under the umbrella of what and where this team is headed. I would blow up the Org Chart and get that straightened out PDQ. Then start from there all the way down to the trainers if necessary.
I don't think Tom Coughlin is going to work. He couldn't reel in OBJ and didn't even know how to go about it. I think he's too old to be able to bring the rage when needed.
That was a disgrace on so many levels, but that is what blowing it up is going to look like for a while. I don't see Woody tolerating many more nights like last night. New HC. Maybe a new GM. We are likely to bring in ANOTHER washed up veteran QB and try to patch our other holes through FA. He wants butts in the seats and that requires a mediocre product. Rinse and repeat.
I disagree. If I were a season ticket holder, I wouldn't pay for tickets to see another freaking JAG QB and a mediocre product on the field. I would pay to see a team loaded with young players with a ton of potential. They'd make mistakes, and probably look awful at times, but would also be exciting and would look great at times. As a fan who lives in another state, I would still keep following and rooting for that young team. If Woody brings back Bowles and brings in Romo, Cutler or another older JAG QB and demands that the Jets "win now," I'm done with this team until Woody dies or sells it.
Blow up? Hell, I'm ready to have Woody sell the team! Whatever it takes to FINALLY purge the losing mentality of this franchise. Short of that, I would like to see a President of Football Operations hired who knows football. Maybe Holmgren, or Coughlin? The Pres. would be free to hire everyone below him, but I'd prefer that Mac be kept for now, unless someone better can be found, which I think is unlikely. A new HC and coaching staff, and preferably someone who has SUCCESSFUL experience, as opposed to yet another coordinator who has to learn OTJ. A new, franchise QB is needed, but probably isn't available to them for at least a year, and that's only depending on their draft position. Almost no team gets to, or wins, a SB without a top flight QB. This has to be the Primary Mission for this franchise until its completed. That said, for now, I'd go with Petty and then if necessary Hackenburg, and maybe they get lucky...not likely, but it's their best choice for now. I would even agree to sign Smith for a vastly reduced salary as an insurance policy that obviously has a short shelf life. To ease the strain on the young QBs, I think the next highest priority is a stud RB, someone capable of making his own holes and breaking games open on any play. They could well be in a position to get this player this year with Fournette. Upgrading the OL comes next, closely followed by the secondary, or vice versa. A stud pass rusher is needed too, but I think the other needs are higher than this right now, and maybe grabbing this guy comes in 2018, unless their franchise QB is there for them. This is a lot of change, and not likely to happen, but it do-able if they have the guts, and it would transform them. That's my plan, fire away.
People keep throwing this out, like it's a thing. Might as well wish for the Jets to hire Conan the Barbarian on a magical unicorn. Or even a non-magical unicorn! Please take a few minutes and do some research to provide us with a list of available HC candidates who have a winning record, are available, and would consider the position of Head Coach of the New York Jets an improvement over their current career. I, and everyone else, will be happy to consider and debate any serious candidate you, or anybody else, puts forth.
All we need is a good QB - sad thing is that is what we have needed for the last 40 years or so and never had. One day we will get lucky in the draft - it has to be our turn once right? right?
The Chargers are proof that you need more than a good QB. Between Brees and Rivers, they've had all the talent anybody could ask for for the last 15 years and they have the same number of Super Bowls as the Jets.
Conan would not. However, I would be at least slightly MORE impressed by a Non-Magical Unicorn than by a Magical one.
First, I'm not privy to all the behind the scenes info that would allow me to know who might be available - are you? If so, please share. But based on current situations and standings, maybe one of these guys would consider a change: Bill O'Brien - admittedly not likely, but if the Texans don't make the playoffs, he did have success with Hackenburg, and maybe would be willing to see if he could make him into the QB he saw when he had him at PSU. John Fox - Older, but has been successful, and might be ready for another change. Mike McCarthy - I doubt he'll be fired by the Packers, and if not, then will probably stay there, but he would be a good choice if available. Sean Payton - Definitely an offensive mind, and again, might not be quite ready to walk away from a QB like Brees, but who knows? Okay, take your pot shots.
This team is already playing like a bunch of prancing rainbow riding unicorns, so unless Conan shows up riding a dragon or sabretooth tiger I'm not sure if I could sign off on that deal.
McCarthy and Payton would be the only two on that list I'd want. O'Brien hasn't done a good job with the Texans at all imo. I've never liked Fox. He was too conservative and dumb with the Panthers and has been with the Broncos and Bears. I would be shocked if GB fired McCarthy, but if they did, I'd take him in a NY Minute. I'd be even more shocked if Payton left NO, but again, I'd take him in a NY minute.
But you DO need a top flight QB, and they're really hard to find, so a team should always be looking for that first and foremost. That said, you also need good supporting players and good coaching.
No pot shots here. I personally think all four of those will be back in the same jobs next year, and I don't think the Jets will be a better team next year than any of those four. Even the Bears-- if I'm not mistaken, they have the youngest roster in the NFL. Unlike the Jets players, I suspect Bears players will learn something from this season and be better next year. I don't have any more info than anybody else. The closest guys I could come up with are (in no particular order): Todd Haley, who is a hothead and probably not a good fit for NY, nor for rebuilding a team with a bad attitude. He may just not be HC material. Bill Callahan, who nobody here will get excited about, but who could build a monster O-line faster than anybody and has shown plenty of aggressiveness in both passing and running the ball. 17-18 all time, and got a raw deal in Oakland. Scott Linehan, who is 11-25 all time......which is hard to get excited about. But with the Trent Green/Marc Bulger Rams, what can you expect? Mike Tice is another former HC who is still around. 33-34 all time, and is currently the Raiders O-line coach. Wouldn't be my first choice, but he is one of the few guys out there who fit the criteria.
