Per Bowles' most candid press conference ever. Notes: - Final 4 games was the plan all along, even if the Jets won a blowout tonight. Final quarter the right time to evaluate. - Barring injury, Petty will start all 4. No Hack, no Fitz. - Hack may be backup with Fitz inactive; that will be discussed tomorrow. Embrace the tank.
I still refuse to embrace the tank, but I ENTHUSIASTICALLY WELCOME the young player evaluation period! Now get out there and win 4 games using only our Rookies, second-, and third-year players!
If he had said Fitz was the starter again I was done. Unfortunately, a QB change can't fix this defense, so the results might not be any different. At least it's a reason to tune in other than blind loyalty, though as I've said, this team is the enemy of hope so I'm not doing any cartwheels.
Because we were still trying to lock up that final wild card spot and Fitzpatrick gave us the best chance to do so.
Bingo Bowles doesn't make any fucking sense. If you had already committed to playing Petty . . . why the fuck not play him TONIGHT? or, to put it in simpler terms that any idiot (our coach?) could understand: How is 4 games of player development ever better than 5?
Dumbest shit I've ever heard of. Not because Petty is starting but because we've wasted 12 games on a fucking bum for no reason. What the hell was the point in playing Noodledick the last two weeks if the plan all along was to finish with Petty. I don't want to hear... well it makes sense blah blah blah cause it doesnt. He should've been playing the second Geno tore his ACL.
So Petty played in his second game and looked like crap. Compare Jacoby Brisset, third string QB ROOKIE yet won his first game 27-0 against a pretty good defensive team Houston. He hurt his throwing hand that game and lost 16-0 next game against the Bills, but he had to go on IR, he was just sucking it up for the team because they had no one else. Yet Petty, after A YEAR AND A HALF AND ONE START, still looks like crap! Bowles may know x's and o's, but I honestly don't think he knows how to prepare players, and it's not just Petty, it's the other new guys too. Ron
Better late then never. Let's see what he can do with a week of practice with 1sts and I pray a decent game plan.
That's huge...(Game Plan) I wonder if last nite, they just let Petty air it out just to get him used to throwing the ball around. There was no rhyme or reason to the play calling at all and more often than not, Petty was throwing into a 8 man secondary. Gailey just completely abandoned the run game and went air raid and the Colts, knowing it was the kid's second game EVER in the pros took advantage. The Jet offense after Petty came in looked more preseason than regular season. It also appeared that Petty was overthinking and too often afraid to pull the trigger on a throw. That will improve with time and experience.
You're right about Bowles not knowing how to prepare players to play. That much is obvious from watching the last two seasons. It's just one more glaring thing that he doesn't know amidst a sea of other things he doesn't know, and that makes him totally unprepared and unqualified to be a HC. I can't believe that Wolfe would have recommended this fucking stiff to Woody. Bowles isn't Kotite bad, but he's pretty darned close. The only difference is that Kotite had been a better coach with the Eagles, and then obviously just stopped caring about the game, himself or the team when he came to the Jets. Bowles is pathetic because he's never been good. It now looks like the Cardinals' D is even better now without him than they were with him. I'm beginning to think he had one lucky season with the Cardinals and that's all he's got as a coach.
There wasn't much Petty could do yesterday. There was only one drive where they went sensible and Petty threw a TD pass. But between Anderson's drops and jogging routes, Go routes were doomed. He was nailing the short and middle passes but they decided to just have him throw it up every play and those kinds of passes tend to get picked off a lot no matter who the QB is.
Petty was 11/25 for 125 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT's. The INT's were horrible reads, especially the second one. No worse than Fitz, but Petty needs to see the field better, no doubt. Hopefully that comes with game reps. There were several overthrows and 5 drops of catchable balls. With 1st team practice reps, hopefully the young WR's and Petty can get in synch. Let the kid learn and mature. He has too much upside to not try to make it work for him. Can you imagine having a gunslinger Jet QB?
