If he retires before next season starts we owe him nothing. If we cut him before next season we owe him 6.something mill. Cut after 2nd day of next season we owe him like 8 mill.
He was always a solid tackler in his prime. He'd wrap them up and bring them down not just take out their legs like most Corners. It's totally clear he doesn't give a shit anymore.
Incorrect. Guaranteed money is, well, guaranteed, regardless if the player is cut, retires, dies.... Revis will get his $6million next year. No one was expecting him to play that 3rd year for $6million. He was either gonna suck and get cut and get the remaining $6million, or do well and tear up the contract and negotiate for more. That's why the contract was viewed as a 2-year, $39million guaranteed contract from the outset. Pushing the final $6million into the 3rd year was a way for the team to spread out the payments and avoid larger cap hits. If they keep him, he'd be due $15.3 million. Not gonna happen. Like you pointed out, if cut after the second day of the league year, the amount goes up. If he retires before the second day of the league year, he gets his $6million and will still be property of the Jets, so it's not like he can "retire" then decide to come back and play somewhere else. Not gonna happen either, unless his professed love of the franchise is true and he's willing to protect their interests if he decided to change his mind. But he's getting his $6million guaranteed regardless. I'm curious to know why you think this is not the case.
I don't believe that that is true. By your argument, a player could sign a contract and immediately retire, and he would get all of the guaranteed money for doing nothing. I believe that there are three distinct issues: (1) Signing bonus. A player gets this according to what the contract says; it might be protected according to the contract (meaning that the team can't try to get any back from a player who retires or not pay any they haven't paid yet), or it might not (in which case the team could try to get some of it back or not pay some of it). (2) Guaranteed money. "Guaranteed" means guaranteed against injury or guaranteed against skill. The former means you get the money if injured, but not if you're cut; the latter means you get the money if they cut you for someone better. Money is not guaranteed against retirement; whatever part of the money that is guaranteed as salary for a given season does not get paid if the player retires. (3) Salary cap. No mater what all guaranteed money counts against the cap. If a player retires or is cut, it accelerates and immediately counts against the cap, even if it is never actually paid out. The following thread from the NFL Reddit describes much of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/2u7u88/when_a_player_retires_before_their_contract/. The following article explains the situation regarding the signing bonus: http://overthecap.com/what-happens-when-calvin-johnson-retires/
Yes, they can. And conversely, the team is protected that the player is still under the control of the team and cannot simply change their mind and try to go play for another team. Calvin Johnson is the example of this. And your points regarding signing bonuses are correct, see "the Barry Sanders rule". But stating that guaranteed money is not guaranteed because of Reddit posts? Revis will get his $6million at a minimum next year. CBA > Reddit
Like I said, it all depends on the specific guarantees in Revis' contract - saying "it's guaranteed" is meaningless. Is it fully guaranteed, including against retirement? Unless I see that said by someone official I don't believe it, since even the best quarterbacks typically don't have anywhere near all of their money fully guaranteed. The CBA actually says absolutely nothing about guarantees - contracts are negotiated at the individual level for veterans.
Is there some unreported information that the $39 million is not fully guaranteed? Who knows? I'll concede that anything is possible. But as it stands, it has always been $39 million guaranteed, all sites report dead cap this year would have been $23millionn (17 guaranteed this year, 6 million next year). Nothing reported about conditions such as retirement or injury clause (for example, all contract sites report that Brady's contract is guaranteed for injury only). Revis? $39M fully guaranteed (2015-16 salaries + $6M of 2017 salary) So while anything is possible, it has been reported from day 1 that the $39 million was guaranteed. Until something proves otherwise, it is incorrect to assume that the situation is different.
It is obviously not guaranteed against retirement, that's ridiculous. If that was the case everybody would sign a contract and say "i retire". Why would anybody ever play again if they could just collect 50 or 100 mil and walk away to start a business or live on a beach? The bigger issue is that somebody wrote an article last night saying Johnson is so pissed off he may just cut him in the offseason and that plays right into Revis's hands and gives him exactly what he wants. What they should do is make him the tackling dummy in practice every day and then make him inactive for every game. If they have to pay him they may as well make him work for it.
Because most large contracts (50-100 million) involve signing bonuses which can be recouped in the case of retirement (again, see the Barry Sanders rule). There was no signing bonus in the Revis contract, which is why everyone viewed it as a 2 year, $39million contract. There was no way he was playing for $6million next year. It was designed for the team to spread out their cap hit and give them an out. Pay the $6million and let him go or pay $15.3 million if they keep him. No brainer. And if it's obviously not guaranteed against retirement, show me. I'd have no problem being proven wrong.
Jets owner reportedly feels 'betrayed' by Darrelle Revis, could cut him in offseason Things aren't going very well for Jetscornerback Darrelle Revis. At the age of 31 and dealing with the aftereffects of multiple knee injuries, he isn't playing very well. Someone close to Revis recently told the New York Daily News the cornerback "doesn't want to play anymore," which seems a bit extreme given his salary. Revis is making $17 million this year and stands to make $15.3 million next year. That's assuming he's around anyway. Jason Cole of Bleacher/Report reported on Thursday that Jets owner Woody Johnson is so miffed by Revis' play he might not even offer the corner a paycut. A Jets source indicated the team may not offer cornerback Darrelle Revis a chance to take a paycut this offseason, even if he was willing to take one. Owner Woody Johnson pushed hard for the team to bring back Revis in 2015, but was warned by some people in the organization not to bring back Revis. Johnson has become upset by the way Revis has performed this season, feels betrayed by him and may not want Revis back at any cost. The problem for the Jets in this situation is that they have a $6 million dead cap figure for Revis in 2017. That's not a totally untenable number, but certainly New York would prefer a situation where they restructure Revis' deal by convincing the cornerback to take a paycut and then keep him around for another year. Johnson can be as mad as he wants, but the reality is he gave a 30-year old cornerback with an ACL injury in his past a five-year deal. What was he expecting? Probably not total decline out of a guy who might (will?) go into the Hall of Fame one day, but that's the risk of paying someone money after their prime. Having said all that, it's also possible this is a bit of a bluff by the Jets -- lay it out there that Revis might get cut and then start trying to negotiate a paycut with the corner. The team could also wind up moving him to safety and seeing how he thrives as an older defensive back. Whatever the case, you can fully expect Revis drama this offseason in New York. The Jets version of Jerry Jones is Woody, things will never get better with this guy as the owner. He tries, but he meddles too much.
Just part ways with the guy. Sooner we can forget about his 'era' the better. Best in the league at his position as a Jet. Holds out numerous times. Ultimately leaves due to money. Won a Bowl' with hated rival. Robbed franchise for more money before dogging it. Fuck Darrel Revis. Seriously, the whole damn saga makes my stomach turn when I think about how I support a franchise that lets stuff like this happen.
Keep in mind this is the Fanbase that still revels in back to back AFCCG losses.. Ask any Bills fan what they think about losing 4 SB's decades ago.
Macc would be applauded if he were to cut Revis from the team Monday morning if Revis has another un-inspired game.
As much as I would like that as well, another part of me is happy that Woodys meddling is blowing up in his face. He was advised to not bring him back, there are obviously some smart people around Woody with foresight and he refuses to listen. This is a mess created by Woody, he can choke on it.
Oh so let's see, you're happy the Jets suck..ok., He's the owner and as such entitled to do whatever the fuck he wants..buy the team and then you will have the same right.
Funny thing is, I remember even in 2014 he was kvetching about being put in zone coverage the first few games. What do you bet he showed up out of shape in NE and Hoodie refused to man him up until he got into shape? But here, Revis is the king with no pressure on him - so he's fat at the start of training camp and out of shape in the season.
If that happens, it's even money on Revis pulling a Legarrette Blount on us - taking our money, signing back with the Patsies mid season, and then going on to win the SB.
