Darron Lee looked good...he was all over the field...big development there. Defense has improved from its beginning follies. Also Roberts maybe someone I wanna see more as the 2nd CB. Oh and Enuwma was a beast.
I dont feelt he defense has improved. They are the same as they were at the beginning of the year but just playing weaker competition. They are just an average bunch with no pass rushers and no corners. There is still a severe lack of talent outside of a few players on the dline. Good teams will expose this as you saw today.
The way he just wrapped up his tackles was amazing to see. Normally this is something mundane but with the Jets and the way they tend to tackle; it's refreshing.
These big vaunted defensive lineman are an absolute joke. Wilkerson doesn't look to care and we get absolutely no pressure at all. Nothing. No more 300 pounders at the top of the draft unless we're going to play one at the 3T in a 4-3 flanked by speed rushers. Remember when we thought Wilkerson was just a class below Watt? LOL. Roberts looks to be a serviceable corner in this league. Decent tackler and bad ball skills but at the very least he seems like he can hang with receivers in a deep zone type of system. Good tackling corners are underrated as a commodity. It's the reason Marcus Williams can't be counted on to stay on the field. All things considered the secondary wasn't terrible. Revis looked better, Gilchrist didn't let up any big big plays other than that last Hogan catch which might've been either Pryor or Gilchrist not sure whose assignment it was or what the coverage was. Looked like cover 2 and the route split the safeties. Tough play. I don't expect either to be back next year so it's not a big deal. The young core of the defense looks to be plenty to hold the fort while we try to construct an offense in the draft. Need to add another inside linebacker really and we'll have to live with Mauldin/Jenkins on the edge. A mid round center field safety will be needed as well. It honestly looks like a scheme change would do wonders for this team. Kick Mo and Leo inside next year and start Mauldin on the outside while signing Mario Addison to play the weakside end. Play Darron Lee at weakside backer while signing Malcom Smith and Zach Brown. Boom there's our 4-3. Unfortunately that won't happen with this coach. Could be our very own Marcus Stroud/John Henderson or Pat Williams/Kevin Williams type of combination.
Lee is the perfect fit for this defense. He has the needed speed to catch up to the receiver after the defenders give them a ten yard cushion
I think Mauldin put on too much muscle, he was able to drop his shoulder last year and bend that corner, he looks like he has lost a step when he probably should have improved. Wilkerson got paid and got lazy, absoluley nothing from him. It could be scheme though, I have never seen a defense not create turnovers like this defense.
The defense flew to the football today, they looked more in sync. It doesn't mean crap because they failed when needed but Lee looked great. Big Cat was great as well...
Just kicking around ideas. I don't get how anyone; Tannenbaum, Rex, Idzik, Mangini, Maccagnan, Bradway, Bowles etc. ever thought it was a good idea to try to build the strength of a defense in the secondary. Especially an attacking 3-4 defenses. The days of those long developing blitzes being effective have been long gone since we beat the Colts & Pats in the 2010 playoffs. Any halfway decent quarterback will destroy that type of defense without a Von Miller, Justin Houston type of pass rusher out there. Yet we decided to build it with three 300 pound 3-4 ends and a ton of overpaid defensive backs. Smh
I thought Jenkins would be decent but he just looks slow. A complete non factor this season. We still desperately need a pass rushing OLB. Maybe even two.
