Don, any QB needs protecting and the RB need holes to run through. Aside from Fitz, most QBs in the NFL can hurt you if you give them enough time to spot an open receiver. On average DBs can only keep receivers covered for about 3-4 seconds. If we had an OL that could keep Petty or Shaun Hill or Hack or a QB we draft clean for that long, more often than not, he's going to be able to find an open receiver and hurt the other team.
I'm a believer that you win ball games in the trenches. Build your Oline and Dline solid and you can get by with average talent in other areas. You put a young qb behind a crap oline and all you get is David Carr 2.0
I don't really disagree with that but you can put a crap qb behind a stellar line and you will still have a crap qb..i still say get the qb first..when is the last time a team won the sb without a franchise qb? Tampa Bay? And they only won because they had Gruden.
Apparently that's the case..they trade up for OL, they stay pat and take DL..oh wait, they did once have a brainstorm and trade up for Sanchez but basically the thought never crosses their mind, you're right.
The more I look at it, the more I think the Jets may need to cut/part ways with Mangold during the offseason. As much as I hate that idea, it appears it very well could happen. After that, what is left? Carpenter as a decent guy? Clady cannot be relied on, he's too injury prone and his play slipped big time while he was playing. The rest of the OL amounts to depth at it's very best. We need at least TWO FA acquisitions for the OL and TWO drafted OL for this OL to rebound next season. I also know this will not happen in one offseason. So this will be a long term ongoing problem for the Jets until they have big bucks to spend in FA.............
The trenches definitely need to be built, but if you have average talent at QB and the skill positions, getting by is all you'll do. You'll have zero chance of making the playoffs, much less getting to and winning a SB.
I agree with you regarding Mangold. I totally disagree with you regarding spending big bucks on FA OL. The Jets have been there before and had no money for skill position players. No thanks. They need to draft most of their OL. They can add either a LT or RT via FA, but not both, and can't afford to pay big money for OGs or a C.
Smith, Amaro, Smith, Hill, Ducasse, Clemons and the Nuge. Based on this list of stellar second rounders, if J Thomas is available for a second, I'd do it. Plus, they're gonna need somebody with experience to block for Romo...
If they trade for Romo or sign him as a FA, I won't care if there's anyone to block for him because I won't be here. If Romo can't stay healthy behind the 'Boys OL, he'd never survive his 1st series here.
The last time the Jets had a 2nd round pick make a Pro Bowl was Mark Gastineau in 1979 (other than if you want to count Justin Miller as a Pro Bowl kick returner). With those odds we might as well trade them away every years.
"we need to build through the draft" ......okay, here's some valuable 2nd rounders....vlad ducasse, stephen hill, browning nagle, mike nugent, etc. etc. etc.
If we trade a second for Joe Thomas, would Joe Thomas also be cursed? Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
Then why wasn't Cassel (1-6), Moore (0-2) and Breeden (0-3) successful last year? They had the same OL last year and a good ground game as well. Prescott is successful because he's good.
