Like Satan, US election days are foreign to me. What was it like? Did you feel pretty well informed on a lot of the other names on the ballot (e.g. local positions, judges etc.)? I heard you're not allowed to wear clothing that blatantly supports a candidate? I'm curious if they give out voting guides of any sort where every candidate gives a small blurb about what they stand for. We had that for our recent local elections, but it was a mail-in situation.
I was well informed on who was on the ballot. I don't know any rule about clothing but I wore a red polo shirt and no one said anything. No blurb whatsoever. Just a big giant paper with the candidate's name and who they represent. Have to bubble in your choices, take the paper and slide it into a machine while it scans it. If you get a check or success on the screen you're good to go.
A small blurb about the candidates would be extremely controversial. there would be lawsuits. that's america. better to be woefully under informed than allow any election inspector to pass out information of any kind because that could be "biased"
Some people will go to the candidates website to see where they stand but I would say the vast majority are uninformed in their decision, even on the major races let alone the local races. Wearing something with the candidates name or slogan is called electioneering and is not allowed within a certain amount of feet of the pooling station. I know my area the newspaper will have a guide in one of the section purporting to show where each candidate stands on the issues but of course that newspaper endorses candidates so if you think it is without slant you would be mistaken. I'll I can say is we have hit a low point in the history of the Presidency with either of the 2 major candidates, no previous President has come anywhere near as bad as these 2 choices.
Bah. People have been saying this since the dawn of the republic. When you pick your chief executive in a winner takes all format you're going to drive a lot of good people out of the process and you're going to incentivize the ones that stay in to demonize and attack their opponents. So the perception is always how terrible the candidates are.
I did have to show my ID so they could find me on the list. The line for my assembly district was like 3-4 people.
This year, though, perception is reality. We have a celebrity who has zero qualifications to be President and a career politician/liar/criminal whose only qualification is that she is part of the system whose only interest is keeping itself in power.
I can't think of any President in my lifetime who is even close to as bad as Clinton and Trump. Carter maybe but I still think these 2 are by far worse. Maybe when all is said and done I will be proven wrong but I sincerely doubt it.
Really interesting. All the guy had to provide was his name and address along with signature (forged) and he was able to vote. He is located in South Jersey.
