You're right. It's a no-brainer. It's time to see what Petty can do. If not, then Bowles should be fired.
Coaches job is primarily the X's and O's, not player evaluation. Just blindly believing the CS knows best is sheep mentality. Almost every team doesn't utilize the talent at their disposal correctly. Usually it takes injuries to force their hand.
I disagree. I think player evaluation is X's and O's. If you believe almost every team doesn't utilize their talent correctly then you believe almost every coach is bad.
there's more that I don't like than like...why do you think the average shelf life for an NFL HC is so short...
We need a professional "NFL" head coach not a friend of the team,"nice guy", or glorified coordinator. At this point we need somebody that can come in here and crack the whip. On a side note I feel like the attitude in part is due to being Rex's players and they long for that kind of atmosphere.
Besides who else can say they have a QB whose entire NFL completion percentage is 100? We can, start him!
It's crazy because you want the kid to have a chance to succeed in his first outing and build confidence. You don't throw him out for his first game against the best team we'll face all year. That's just nuts! You obviously know nothing about teaching and developing people.
Normally I'd agree, but not in this case. Mental toughness is a part of the deal. Petty was in the system for 1.5 years; time's up. Put him in now. If he get smacked by Rams, he'll have 2 weeks to adjust and continue. If still no good -- so be it, on to the next in line.
We Do agree. I said I think he should start now. What I was responding to was waiting and having Petty's first start be against the Pats.
Yeah, the problem is Gailey won't do it and I'd take Petty vs. anybody (including vs P*ts 1st game) over no Petty.
That's putting a ton of pressure on Petty, and if he struggles, many, if not most Jets fans will immediately say he sucks, is a bust and should be cut. It's smarter to let his first start be against a weaker team and let him build some confidence. Bellicheat confuses all rookie QBs. Petty would have little or no chance. I don't think we should let our disgust with Fitz and Bowles cause us to act irrationally. We need Petty to succeed. He needs to be give the best chance to succeed. Having his first start be against the Pats, isn't giving him that best chance.
Petty will eventually have to face good D. When this happens, he'll probably hit the dirt hard. It doesn't matter if this happens his 1st or 5th game. He is either mentally prepared to overcome bad game, or he is not. The relevant part is that if it's on his 1st outing, fans will form opinion immediately. If it's not on the 1st time, fans might give benefit of the doubt. What you're missing is that fan's opinion is irrelevant. If Petty is the man, he will overcome the boos. If he can't -- then he is not THAT guy and I don't give a fuck. To put it differently: he either can, or cannot ball. If he can, it doesn't matter much who he plays 1st.
I think Petty is mentally equipped and prepared to overcome a bad game, but why unnecessarily take that risk when we don't have to? Start him this week and let him have a game under his belt before he faces the Pats. Having him start this week gives him 2 weeks of practice and another week during the Bye to mentally prepare before he has to play the Pats, and it means we don't have to see Fitz this week. I'm not missing anything. Even though the fans ultimately don't make the decisions, they can sure make it tougher on a young QB. Again, why subject Petty to something unnecessarily? If Petty starts vs the Rams, plays well and the Jets win, he'll have the fans behind him, will have the confidence of having started a game, played well and won going into the game vs the Pats. There's such a thing as stacking the deck against someone and severely limiting their chances to succeed. Petty will already be at a disadvantage playing behind our OL, and having boobs as his OC and HC. Why make it tougher on him? And Jets fans wonder why we never have a good young QB.
A dose of reality: QB ranks in order of most int's Pct Yds Yd/thr TD INT 1 Ryan Fitzpatrick, 56.5 1,982 6.63 8 13 2 Case Keenum, 61.5 2,004 7.08 9 11 3 Blake Bortles, 59.2 2,156 6.51 14 10 And if you look at QB's with the same number of TD's as Fitz (8), Alex Smith has 2 int's , and Ryan Tannehill has 7. There are two *rookie* QB's with better numbers than Fitz, and we have a second year guy in Petty. It's long past time to see what Petty can do. Ron
I'm assuming you meant to say that I "just don't see or comprehend it" I can assure you I understand exactly what you're saying. Now understand this: if Petty is mentally ready, bad game or boos won't change it. The only reason why you might think he could be shaken is if you believe he might not be ready. I get it: you want to build up the confidence so he has something to lay on. Like "Yeah this was bad, but I'm still the same QB who feasted on Rams". That's nice, but with these fans and this city what we need is QB who would be like: "Shit, that was awful 1st game, but fuck it, I'll rape whoever we play next" So I say - throw him into the river and see if he can swim out.
