Spiller has bounced around a lot lately, seems to me he would have caught on if he had anything left in the tank. Marshall has been struggling on ST so this may be why he's being brought on board.
CJ knows Chan's offense, and is a solid addition to the Jets rb depth chart. I'm quite sure the Jets don't want to keep giving Forte the workload he's been getting of late. Want to keep all the backs healthy, including Powell. The bottom line the Jets identity on offense right now is ground and pound, so like I said it's a solid pickup.
Not only not worth it, but it is stupid to get a discarded retread on a roster that is old and on life support already. The jets do not get it--The jets have a 3rd year player like McDougle on the practice squad--they have the worst DBs in the league--either activate/play mcdougle or release him from practice squad--a practice squad is for emergency players NOW or long-term developmental players--since they are not activating mcdougle now and have instead signed 2 other players off other teams practice squads to play CB, what are they doing? Now, they cut a promising running back like Pope to claim Davis whom they cut for spiller. (?) Spiller for kickoff returns? Most of the teams who take the touchback and get the ball at the 25 start with better field position than those who run it out to the 19. That's it--Keep adding old retreads and let the developmental players go. And let's keep our 3rd year players on the practice squad when we have no intention of ever playing them at our neediest position. To continue this "anti-youth" movement (since we so close to the super bowl with our 33-year old rag arm QB), why don't we resign Antonio Cromartie for CB and waive another young player? Then move Revis to safety so he can exercise his constitutional right NOT to try to tackle anyone from the safety position.
Hopefully they use him as a wide receiver and kick returner exclusively. But you're probably right. We'll throttle down Powell's touches to get a worse player on the field. Brilliant!
I basically agree with your post, Tom. It's frustrating. I don't understand the Jets' moves. Maybe they think no one will sign McDougle, so they'll keep him there and try to develop him, whereas when they sign players off of other PSs, they have to add them to the regular roster. In terms of Pope, I can only guess that either Mac doesn't know what he's doing, they didn't think Pope showed that much promise, or Woody gave Mac explicit orders to win now and not worry so much about long-term development..
Say what you want about Revis and his declining coverage abilities. The dude can still tackle for sure though. Along with jamming receivers, he was always one of the best tackling corners in the game. He could still be an abover average player if he was used correctly. I haven't seen him jam a receiver once this year. I'm sick of hearing about the wrist injury. He had surgery on it, it should be water under the bridge. I remember him jamming at the line last year against Washington, then falling into his zone, reading Cousins' eyes and picking off an underneath pass (although a poorly thrown ball). Give Revis some FUCKING safety help and tell him to read the quarterback. He could reinvent himself and be a ball hawk because he still has good ball skills, he just has lost recovery speed. Nah we'll continue to play him 14 yards off and let receivers catch stops and comebacks all day like fools.
Spiller is only 29 years old. He was only drafted in 2010 and he has relatively low mileage. Forte is banged up and Powell has turf toe. Absolutely nothing wrong with this cheap depth signing. Not hugely significant one way or the other. If he works out great, if not we can cut him and lose nothing.
Well, we aren't going to win now or next year or any year in the future until we have a franchise QB and like our other past GMs Maccagnan can't seem to figure that out..
Spiller's another retread. Noone is giving him up if he has anything left in the tank. To think otherwise half way through an NFL season is foolish.
If the situation is that the Jets have to win now, more than likely, that is coming from Woody, not Mac.
I can't believe so many people are up in arms over a guy that was most likely brought here to return kicks. Although, it's the Jets fanbase, so I shouldn't be too surprised.
stop bitching about jets fans. also you don't even know what they brought spiller in for anyway. the way I see it they are obviously trying to recreate that dominant 2011 Buffalo Bills offense. With Chan calling the plays, Fitzpatrick under center and Spiller to hand it off too. All they need is Stevie johnson to throw to and they will be dominant just like those bills teams
Like most of you im really confused by this move. I want to see powell get more carries than forte, and now were adding what seems to be like a guy just because gailey likes him, which will only reduce powells carries. Spiller has been released 3x in a year. There is a reason for that. Hopefully Im wrong or he can play corner. I don't get it
I love when people overreact to teams bringing in 3rd running backs. Teams bring in guys like this in the middle of the season all the time. Powell has a turf toe and Forte has a banged up knee and has already gotten a lot of carries. This is a harmless depth move. Also, I would love to see someone other than Marshall returning kicks.
I'm not sure of Spillers role in the offense but he's coming in to return kicks and punts. Jalin has been awful in his decision making lately, they feel Spiller may give a boost there.
