We are 1-5... we are not making the playoffs. we could go 9-1 the rest of the way and still not get in. and finishing strong is a moral victory that doesnt help us going forward. Fitzpatrick shouldnt play again. has nothing to do with who gives us the best chance to win. he is old and on a 1 year deal. every move we make needs to be about the future. fitz has no future here. Geno should not play. we have seen 1.5 years of him as a starter. im not saying he cant be a low end starter definitively. but he isnt a franchise qb who will make us a good team. any rep he takes is 1 less rep for the younger guys we have yet to see. Petty and Hack... these guys need reps. we need to see what they have. ESPECIALLY if we end up with a top 3-5 pick and are in position to draft another qb in next years draft. there would be no pressure on these guys as our season is over anyhow.
I dont want Hack to suit up this year at all. He needs a year to sit. He's young it wont hurt him or us. Petty has been injured for nearly 2 months. He needs a few weeks to get into things again. It's not like he has a ton of experience to draw on. A combination of rust, inexperience and the way this team is playing is a recipe for disaster. If things look as bad in a few weeks then Petty needs to have a shot. So that leaves us Fitz and Geno. Neither are the answer, but I'd take a shot on Geno in the unlikely event he can be that low-end starter. Whichever it is has to have a short leash though. Thought it was interesting that the sideline reporter asked Bowles about keeping 4 QBs. The response was something along the lines of there's a good reason but you aren't going to see it yet. To me that indicated that they are very high on one of Petty or Hack, but that he isn't ready.
"not hurting us" isnt a concern. whats is going to help us? what does sitting for a year do? there is no substitute for real live in game reps. its not like you are throwing the kid to the wolves week 1 asking him to get us to the playoffs. season is toast. use it to develop the kid. give him reps. hell it doesnt even need to be the entire game. give him a quarter or two each week. this season is over. there is no turning it around. we arent going 9-1 to finish the year. its not about wins and losses anymore, its about developing young guys and seeing what they can do. there is no upside to playing geno. we have seen what he can do
Giving Geno Smith reps, at this point, is a waste of valuable time with the "first" team. As soon as Petty is healthy, he needs to be starting. The Jets have to see what he can do against live defenses so they can make a decision whether or not to take a QB with their top 5 pick.
Agreed, this is where the GM and Owner say, "Coach, we gave the vets their shot at the playoffs. It didnt happen. Now we need to focus on our rebuild." I would give Geno the Ravens game to see what he has. But frankly I seen enough with him in one series to know he hasnt progressed. He holds the ball too low in drop backs (strip fumble) he cant read defenses quickly (timeout) and he doesnt move very well in the pocket. The INT was just a desperation throw that the DB made a good play on. So get Petty in a room, tell him he has two weeks to get ready. If they feel like Hack can manage the offense, give him some reps as well. A quarter here and there. Frankly seeing these young guys play and develop will be the only reason I will watch a Jets game the rest of the season.
I have no problem putting Petty in there, but I don't think it's a good idea on a short week, coming off a lengthy layoff when he hasn't even played a regular season game before. Yes its about developing the young guy now, but give them the best chance of success when you do it, not as a knee-jerk reaction. Having said I don't want Hack active, I suppose letting him get some time towards the end of the season wouldn't hurt too much, but there are people on here who have already written him off based on preseason. Again, it's put them in the best position to succeed when they do get a shot.
Top 10 pick is the most you can hope for and I wouldn't count on that either. Unless of course we actually lose to the cellar dwellers too.
Playing Geno Smith is not a waste of time. You need to see if he's anything worth working with before you let him walk after the year. He also has a strong arm and it would help guys like Robby Anderson develop their game without having to stop and wait for deep/intermediate passes like they've been having to do all season. Playing Fitzpatrick is the ultimate waste of time yes. I agree with you that they should give Petty time as well but since the season is already over and there are 10 games left, there is plenty of time to play both Geno Smith and Petty before the season is over.
The franchise QB is not on this roster, Hackenburg is complete garbage and will never be an NFL quarterback. Petty doesn't have the accuracy or instincts. F it, keep Fitz in there, go 1-15 and compete with the Browns for that #1 pick, maybe we'll get a Wentz or something. But you know we'll draft a DB or DE and everyone will scream how great the pick was and how we had to take him because he was the "best player in the draft". When you don't draft high on offense for 20 years it's no wonder your team is shit and every QB has been trash.
We are 1-5 so I would roll with Geno for next week. If he shits the bed the way Fitz has, then you go to petty the rest of the way. Geno's leash is short because of his past, Petty needs to see the field so we can ascertain whether he is worth keeping going forward. Fitz and Geno are not being brought back next year
This is the thing. In 2017 you cant keep both Petty and Hack on the team AND have a third player who is a hold the fort guy (even Geno) And you cant go into 2017 without either of your QB's on roster seeing a snap. They will have to see what Petty can do THIS year. I would go to him first, then have a look at Geno. Hack I would just let him watch a year. He is very young and has alot of time to prepare.
yeah i can see the value in that. give geno baltimore to prepare petty or hack to start moving forward
I would even sign up for Petty for the rest of the season...I don't really want to see Hack because he needs a full year to just regain confidence in his mechanics and confidence in general. Geno really should only get a 1-2 game leash based on the fact that he's young and in a contract year. I still think Hack will most likely be the starting qb next year unless Macc goes out and gets Cutler, Romo, or Tannehill.
Pre Draft and over the Summer I posted again and again what a poor strategy it is to keep drafting on Defense Lee sux he is too small to cover TEs Why is this not obvious to Toilet Bowles when he insisted Mac get him???? Now we witness this sh*tparade and Fitz failing You have Petty and Hack get them in there ...see what you've got Go Offense with each draft going forward till the OL is redone and draft a QB every year till one sticks
Petty time inseed. Genocide shouldn't take a fucking snap if Fitz isn't under center. It should be Petty. See what we have in him against real nfl competition
If Fitz is startlng next week I doubt we see Petty or Hackenburg for a couple weeks at least. We have to decide whether or not to keep Geno after the season is over (as starter or backup). We also need to decide how much we are willing to pay Geno. Petty has been hurt and Hackenburg may see garbage time but is unlikely to get in the first half until the last 3-4 games. Once they pull the plug on the Beard (in a week or two) they will ride Geno who will also find the bench if he can not deliver.
