ASJ coming out of college was a beast and from what I remember made plays for the yucks too. It's a low risk high potential move by Mac. I like it!
The TE position has never been a focal point in his offense. He has never been a guy that will go out of his way to get the HC to bring in some really good TE's and waste a bunch of money on those guys so he can involved them in the passing game. Will he work with whatever is already on the team like he did in Kansas when they had Tony Gonzalez in his prime? DUH. Of course. Does that mean typically the TE position is of importance to him? NO. That's a fact. He lines up with bigger receivers, H-Backs, he loves the shotgun, he does not care for TE's. If he did he would have had a long history of signing big name TE's when he never had any in all those years in the past decade, whether it's with the Bills or the Jets. He always had enough power and credibility to ask the HC to bring in a quality TE. That's what you do as a coordinator. You make the position that is a focal point in your offense/defense a priority. The fact that he has no history of doing so is a pretty good indicator that the TE position is pretty irrelevant to him. Nobody said he can't work with a TE if he's being gifted a really good one who can be or already is special.
If Gailey likes big WRs and h-backs why the hell would he NOT want a TE? They are basically the same thing. The whole "Gailey doesn't care about the position" is so overblown, honestly I question if these people watch the games. For instance, If he doesn't care about the TE position he sure as hell isn't showing it! He had at least 1 TE on the field for 704 snaps last season, which equates to nearly 65% of all snaps. Seems like someone not caring about the position - with a roster full of complete crap at the position - would be giving them a hell of a lot less snaps. oh- and that's counting people listed as TE in the roster book and not Quincy Enunwa, who last season basically played the position. If you include him, you could say Gailey used a TE for nearly every single snap last year
okay, you got me ranting now but another thing about Gailey and his TEs - - he asks a lot out of them in blocking! Everytime they run a counter play, he is almost always asking his TE to make the tough peel back block. That's why we see Kellen Davis and curse the TV screen, because he misses on that block from time to time. It's almost like a draw/counter, all the lineman block down the line and the RB starts in that direction to mis-direct the Defense. Then he counters back to the otherside and its usually the TE that is asked to make the peel back block on the D-lineman that runs free. Sometimes it works and sometimes the TE is too slow and it gets stuffed. That's usually when we curse Kellen Davis' name. watch it sunday. either way, the TE is the most valuable player on one of Gailey's bread and butter plays. Its crazy to me to suggest that he doesn't care about the position. if he doesn't then he sure doesnt show it!!! Thereby they could absolutely use an upgrade
great post. look at the snap counts this year as well. with dreadful options, he's still putting a TE not named Enunwa on the field quite a bit. might as well be one who can actually do something.
Those aren't "facts." They are your interpretation of what Gailey has done at his various coaching spots, with little but your own interpretation or reading, without any knowledge whatsoever of what Gailey thought or wanted, or what went on or was said behind the scenes on those teams. With the exception of Scott Chandler and Gonzalez, he's never really had even a decent TE to work with. It's little wonder that he hasn't focused on them. He'd have to have been an idiot to focus on players who were crap. OCs don't draft players. The Bills teams where he was HC were pretty awful. They had a lot more needs than TE. He'd have been cutting his nose off to spite his face to push for a TE when he needed about everything else and many positions are more important than TE. In addition, you don't know that he didn't ask his HC or GM for a better TE, and they turned him down. So don't pretend like you know what's happened on every one of teams where he's been an OC or HC. You yourself alluded to the approach that Gailey has always used. He works with what is there. He tailors his offense to work with the players that he has. An OC like that doesn't have a system where he has to have a certain type player in order to succeed. Some coordinators only run one system and they are the ones who always insist that they have to have certain players or certain positions in order for their system to work. Coordinators like Gailey are the best. They take the talent on hand and tailor their system or use a different system that will work with the talent they have rather than sit around and publicly whine about what they don't have.
Poor Chan never had a chance with the TE's he's been given. If only coaches had input into the draft and FA. /neurotic homer
Jets coach Todd Bowles laid out his expectations while meeting with Seferian-Jenkins, who surely will be gone quickly if he screws up again. "We sat down and we talked about it," Bowles said. "We have a clear understanding of what I expect. And he has a clear understanding of what he's going to get from me and the rest of the team. We'll just go from there." What were Bowles' impressions of Seferian-Jenkins, who turned 24 on Thursday? "Of course, anybody coming in is going to say all the right things," Bowles said. "But your actions speak louder than your words. So he's got a clean slate with us, and going forward, we'll see what he does. What he does going forward will determine what we do."
Like the move. Tons of potential to a position that can be easily improved. Kid is a big body.......just his run blocking will be a much needed addition. Mac is amazingly quick in getting us players. Love how fast our general manager gets us players. B Marshall, Clady, Forte, Fitzpatrick and now.....ASJenkins.
I don't think anyone came even close to insinuating this. God for bid you took the time to actually read what people were saying or, gasp, do your own research and you'd probably be able to write an informative post rather than being passive aggressive and dropping the ultimate sign of insecurity, the "homer" label.
The last time a team took a chance on a malcontent locker room cancer that no team wanted the Pats set an NFL record for TDs in a season. Not saying Jenkins (or anyone) is Randy Moss but it shows that taking a flyer on top talent with off field issues can SOMETIMES pay off in spades.
The guys is obviously well spoken and knows his place in the locker room right now. I expect to see a guy that is motivated to clear his name. Drinking is a huge epidemic issue in our society right now. I would estimate that 40-50% of TGG members have an issue with alcohol. ASJ could reall stretch the seam and make the corner rout to Marshall a huge rout. If ASJ and BMarsh are on the strong side together, that safety will have to really be on his game. Could be an enormous pick up
Exactly. Bingo. You got it, hit the nail on the head. He'll work with what's there. He doesn't go into the season worrying about whether he's got a great TE to throw the ball to for his offense to function. That was my point the entire time. That's why I said I don't think ASJ is worth the trouble. We don't need him. The offense is going to function just fine. It has been unstoppable last season, the passing attack at least. Chan does not care for TE's, his offense is not built around TE's, or for TE's to get involved in the passing game. He doesn't need them. That was the point I made. Can he work with ASJ? Of course he can. Any moron could. It's up to ASJ to get the job done on the field. Something he wasn't able to do in Tampa. Our offense was fine without ASJ, we're not going to get to some next level now that ASJ is on our team. Therefore I don't think it's worth the trouble. He's been a shithead in the past. One more DUI and you have people question whether Mac is the man for the job, signing a guy like that out of desperation knowing full well the issues he has off the field, that no other team bothered to pick him up and stayed away from him. Bowles losing the locker room. You know the NY media, the Mehta's, they'll have a field day with this and they're just waiting for ASJ to get popped for DUI again, they'll monitor every single thing he does on the field. He starts cussing once, making a gesture towards Fitz or Bowles and it's on. Just one little slip. I get that some people try to stick up for him because he's a Jet now, but I'm trying to figure out where those people where when guys like Sheldon or Aboushi slipped.
This entire post is predicated on you believing there is any risk involved with this signing when in reality there is none at all.
