I'm thinking if a guy like Mike Williams or Schuster is on the board we'd have to consider it with Brandon Marshall in his final years. I like Anderson/Peake/Marshall but not as WR1-2 types. I'd go WR over RB all day if they have first round grades.
OK, thanks. Yeah, I definitely wouldn't want to use the 1st round pick on a RB, but unless a stud WR falls in our lap, think OT must be the #1 priority. Hopefully, we get a guy that can start at RT next year, and then replace Clady in a year or two at LT. Then are able to grab another OT in the 2nd or 3rd round, and an OG in the 3rd or 4th.
Considering the strength of our DL, I personally see it as incredibly unlikely we add a pass-rusher or DL player in the first round. Granted, I just saw us sack Andy Dalton 7 times (without Sheldon Richardson) and still lose the game. It's possible, but I only see it happening if the draft plays out in a very strange manner. I'm mainly looking on the offensive side of the ball, simply because that's where I see both value (in the pick 10-25 range) and need. That said, I can also see us grabbing a defensive back. We have a dominant defensive front but for it to be really effective we need to continue to eliminate deep-options, and Revis is on the decline. Tackles: Cam Robinson (yes, issues), Roderick Johnson G: Pat Eilfein WR: Mike Williams, Juju Smith-Schuster RB: Fournette, McAffery, Cook, Chubb. CB: Jalen Tabor, Marlon Humphrey I see the RB choice as unlikely unless we find ourselves looking at truly excellent value at the position; simply because there are going to be guys like Royce Freeman available in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Interior OL in the first is a pretty rare move but if we do very well this year (or trade-back) Pat Eilfein is a monster interior lineman who'd be great value in the late-20's. This is the guy who opened silly-wide rushing lanes for Elliot all last year, also a team captain, high-character guy, etc, which coaches love, with PFF's highest grade for all Power-5 lineman last year. He could also possibly transition to center to replace Mangold at some point.
Good writeup about Dorian Johnson OL at Pitt. 6-5 315 beast senior 3rd full season as a starter. TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline believes Pittsburgh senior G Dorian Johnson has put himself in the position to possibly be a Rd. 1 pick this spring. Johnson acquitted himself well over the weekend in Pittsburgh's win over Penn State. The Panthers had 341 yards rushing on the day. "Johnson dominated Penn State defenders on the line of scrimmage and looked surprisingly effective as a pulling guard or blocking straight ahead on the second level," Pauline wrote. "Initially graded as a potential second round pick, Johnson continues to impress next level decision makers and could break into the draft’s top 32 selections." So i think were good at WRs guys like potentially maybe scary good one day, Marshall 32, Decker 29, Enunwa 24, Smith 24, J.Marshall 21, Anderson 23, Peake 23. This checks one position group off our needs because suddenly we went from having 2 to like 7 overnight. What we do need however bad is a CB. Revis has fallen off, we were spoiled he was beyond great now he's better than average maybe still top 10-15 even but at the very bottom.
A guy like Ethan Pocic LSU could be a guy to look at, or possibly Pat Elfein Ohio State. After Spriggs came off the board last year when the Packers traded up I was looking at Nick Martin but Houston traded up ahead of us. A guy who could play Guard for a year or two then replace Mangold at Center. Pocic and Elfein are predicted to be just as versatile as Martin with a first and second round grade so far, plus they come from solid programs. I'll be keeping an eye on them.
No first round OGs or Cs. It's wasting the pick. Thankfully, Mac agrees. The second round or lower, OK. The first round pick has to go to OT or CB if at all possible.
Yeah Mangold was such a wasted pick. Former first round pro bowler who has held down the position for the last decade.... Waste of a pick. And no one knows their draft slot yet I'm just saying I'm keeping an eye on them
Don't be ridiculous. I didn't say that Mangold was a wasted pick. Obviously, he's been a great player, but one doesn't need a Pro Bowler at C or OG. It's nice, but a luxury. It's better to have Pro Bowlers at more important play-making, impact positions like QB, LT, CB, OLB, RB, and WR. Very good Cs and OGs can be found in the 2nd round and lower. You seem to have forgotten how the Jets had few, if any, playmakers at all on their team because they had so much cap space and high draft picks tied up on their OL.
Forrest Lamp shut down the Alabama front 7, then proceeded to get injured. I'd still take a shot at him.
Its funny you say running back..... Maybe you have been spoiled the last decade by exceptional center play, someone who can maul in the run game and call protections at a probowl level. Finding an exceptional interior lineman in the late first round is always a good pick, which is hopefully where we will be picking. Its honestly one of the best value picks you could make. If you don't agree that's silly. Plus we already have a ton of assets (picks/cap space) allocated to QB, LT, CB, RB, WR and one could argue two third round picks at OLB is a lot too. We have much less invested in the O-line it would be wise to spread the wealth. Also I'm not arguing that they can't be found later, but if the value is there you take it. Obviously a lot has to be determined between now and draft day we will see where the value lies then.
I don't agree with your bolded sentences at all. There's nothing silly about it at all. I think you're flat out wrong. There's better value at about any position other than FB, P, K and LS. IMO value with interior OL is NOT in the 1st round. IMO the only possible exception to that is if an interior lineman is rated much higher, but drops to the bottom of the round for some reason. In the end, it doesn't matter what you or I think, but what Mac thinks. Thankfully, he sees things much as I do.
I think some team is going to draft Pocic early and try to convert him into a tackle. He was projected to be LSU's starting LT this season, but he hurt his hip and wasn't able to practice as much during the offseason.
Our secondary has been so bad, - we might have to consider a CB in the 1st or 2nd round. Jalen Tabor 6-0 191 Florida Adoree' Jackson 5-11 190 USC Cordrea Tankersley 6-1 195 Clemson Desmond King 5-11 200 Iowa
Another guy I like is Chidobe Awuzie later on, while Oregon's Arrion Springs has been statistically good, I haven't watched the Ducks secondary that much.
