It's hard to blame any HC for not going for it, the Bengals had just stopped them on second down and pushed the oline into the backfield to stop Forte, Fitz was not making good reads in the redzone. I'm sure he is aware of what he is working with, he also chased points in 2 games last year and it cost them both games. This was for the lead, the offense did their job at that point and gave the lead to the defense. In my opinion m, Nick folk failed this team today, period!
I just had a hard time with putting the game on Nick's foot. Matt would have got us the yards and eat up the clock. But I see your point.
I think you have to take into account the game when making decisions, and the context of this game indicated we were very unlikely to keep them out of FG range. Yes, the kick was for the lead but not the win. I was arguing with friends while watching that they had to go for it on 4th and what I said would happen did happen. The coach can't be deluded by optimism that his defense would keep them from moving the ball. He has to be realistic and I thought realism indicated a 2 point lead wasn't any different than going for it on 4th down and missing on it. We should have been playing for the win not simply the lead because it was a short lived lead and there was no indication that it wouldn't be.
It was a combination of things that blew this game for us , coaching included . I hope it's not a "respect" thing with Bowles still leaving Revis to man the island alone because this is 2 games in a row , counting last season's loss to the Bills, and still no adjustment. Last year Bowles let the team go 4 games on a 5 game losing streak before he put his foot down. Soft spoken, nice presser skills but so what....? His soft defense is useless...we have a multi million $ defense that he is pusseying around with. Had a lot of sacks yes but OMG those big plays killed us!!!!!! We lost by a point to a perennial playoff team but our Coach plays not to lose...good points raised here and I thought this year he is done with that?? As I have posted before Mr Revis is on the decline ,,,got something in the tank but rethink how you will be using him going forward Bowles needs to morph more into a Gruden/Bellichek type of Coach or the players will just be cashing checks and the the fans cying in their beer
Jet, no one knew what was going to happen, the personal foul penalty that gave them 15 yards was their undoing. How about giving credit to Mike Nugent? He made a 47 yard FG because the jets defense stopped their offense. The last thing I want from any HC is to shy away from taking the lead when he can because he is afraid that it might not be enough. Always take the lead and put the pressure on the opposing team to have to make plays. JMO
There wasn't a talent or coaching disparity in this game. We lost this game the same way we tend to lose a lot of the close games against NE. You makes mistakes against a good team and they make you pay. 1. Blocked FG 2. Missed PAT 3. Blown coverage that leads to a TD 4. Crucial drop Only the Jets can manage to lose a game where they pretty much dominated both sides of the line.
When your defense is playing the way ours was the FG wasn't enough. Forcing them to score a TD vs a field goal is night and day. They had over 2 mins and all 3 timeouts to go 50 yards max for a FG vs 75-80 for a TD. It's a huge difference. And it's not like it was 4th and a lot. It was inches or a yard. It was easily qb sneak area. My bigger issue is that they had the ball inside the 10 3 times and just went way too conservative each time.
Hindsight is 20/20....no one knew there would be a 15 yard penalty that would help Nugent make a 47 yard FG. The bengals did not march down the field to the jets 20 yard line the last 2 minutes of the game. In regards to the plays in the end zone, Fitz was Fitz as usual, very inconsistent, he almost got Marshal killed on a pass that should have been in his stomach for a TD. That in itself was not a conservative play. I find it very difficult to accept that this board would be ok with TB going for it when a FG gives his team the lead. The Bengals had already proven they could push back the oline on a running play, so I don't think TB was going to run the ball again. Fitz already threw an erratic pass to the corner where decker was his only option. TB is probably thinking of what happened with the bills last year. The only option he had which in my opinion was the correct one was to take the lead. Going for a TD when 3 points gives you the lead on 4th down is not good football strategy, that's college football thinking not professional. This board would have shut down if TB went for a TD instead of the FG and they did not convert. The fire TB banners would have been out on Wednesday if he did that. It's JMO, I respect your opinion on this, we will have to agree to disagree. Let's hope that Thursday we will be having a positive interchange if ideas after the jets win against Buffalo
We lost because Chan Gailey decided to have a shitty called game. We lost because Nick Folk missed the PAT and chip shot field goal. We lost because our secondary was garbage. We lost because because Brandon Marshall was virtually non existent.
I hated the setting up for that last field goal....we were gashing them and then ran the ball, threw a pass to Marshall for a few yards and then ran it up the middle to seemingly set up for a field goal to go ahead by 2 Our defense wasn't playing very well so I didn't understand not playing for a TD there and then kicking the fg as a last resort I could understand if the field goal would have put us up 3 but playing for a 2 point lead is not smart at all I get kicking it on 4th but we shouldn't have tried to set up for just that....we should have been aiming for the TD and we didn't even really try
Red zone failures is what ultimately cost us this game. If those field goals and attempts were td this game would have been a blowout. The bengals are a strong team and legit super bowl contender, the mistakes are fixable. Have to win in buffalo though this week.
players are going to miss, sometimes often... that cant excuse coaching from not putting the team i position to win. i mean if fitz threw a pick and turned it over 3 times not much you can do. but why are we leaving all 3 timeouts in our pockets to end the half? why arent we going for it up 2 on 4th down in the redzone? maybe we still lose, but the coaches didnt give us the best chance to win this one.
TB for all his flaws is not stupid, he knows he he does not have a game changing QB under center, he remembers what happened last year when Fitz threw the Int in the end zone against the bills. He cost the jets 2 games last year because he chased points. He had to kick the FG and give the team the lead. This is not college football, no need to chase points, you build points slowly at this level, Nick failed the jets and it cost them. I said it in another post, it was a 47 yard FG, the face mask penalty on Williams is what put the Bengals in good field position. The Jets still did a good job of stopping the Bengals. Do the jets need a better QB? Absolutely, this team with a good QB could be a wrecking machine, very few teams could go toe to toe with them, unfortunately Mac probably listened to Casserly one time too many and gave in to Fitz demands. We are stuck!
It's frustrating to see a winnable game slip through your fingertips, our fans know that with a better QB, this team as it is built, can compete for a playoff spot. I understand the frustration.
So do I. I'm extremely frustrated. But it's still annoying to see the doom and gloom scenarios spread across 7 different threads all saying the same thing over and over and over.
The play calling on that 1st and goal in the 1st qtr was atrocious. You never throw 3 times in a row from the 4 yard line. EVER. Especially with how well Forte and Bilal were running the ball. Just pathetic.
It's not a matter of "knowing" what will happen, but understanding the events of the game and making decisions for what is likely to happen based on what has happened leading up to this point. I'm sure you recall the Pats/Colts game from 8 or 9 years ago where, with the lead and deep in their own territory, Belichik went for it on 4th and short? Why? Because Indy had been moving up and down the field on them, and he believed, not that he knew, that punting to the Colts and giving them the ball back would likely have the same outcome as going for it on 4th and not getting it -- that the Colts would score regardless. Belichik believed his best chance to win the game was to get the first down and not give Indy the chance to score. That's the kind of strategic decision making that was needed at the point of the game yesterday, but we have Bowles making those decisions not a 4 time winning SB coach. Going up by two was meaningless based on the time left in the game and all Cincy needing to do to take the lead. If kicking the FG and missing on it on 4th down have the same outcome -- Cincy being in the lead, the most sound decision is to go for it on 4th down because getting the first gives you a chance at a different outcome. We can argue Bowles believed his D would make the stop, but believing that despite how Cincy moved the ball makes him a deluded idiot. Belichik didn't hope his D would make the stop, he believed it was less likely that they would because he was honest about the situation and game, and believed giving his offense the opportunity to secure the game was the best decision, despite traditional football reason. But we have Todd Bowles.
