Why would we do that? That just makes no sense imo. You don't keep 4 QBs on your roster to start the season unless your starter is injured, or you plan to do so for the entire season. Third string QBs get very few snaps anyway outside of Scout Team reps. Hack doesn't need reps with the offense. He needs to focus on fixing his mechanics.

The reason they kept Geno to begin with is to be the backup. They wouldn't get rid of him then unless he got injured or continually looked lost/unprepared in practice. They're not gonna cut Petty or Hack. Either would immediately be grabbed by another team.

IMO the only way they'd trim to 3 QBs is if Fitz suffers a season-ending injury in the first 6 games. Be careful what you wish for, it may just come true! Then you'll be watching Geno start.

LOL says who? teams alter their rosters every week and the Jets will do so as they please. They are going with 4 QBs week 1 but that doesn't say anything about the rest of the season nor should it.

and if I have to hear about how Christian Hackenberg is like no other QB ever in the history of the game and doesn't need to take reps in practice I'm gonna bash my head against the wall

It is short term: Geno is on the final year of his contract, and the odds that he's impressive enough to earn a new contract from the Jets are somewhere in the territory of being struck by lightning.

Next year the Jets go into the offseason with 2 QBs under contract that are young, very talented, and have another year of seasoning under their belts.

Looking past the needs of today, that's a good flexible position to be in.

Maybe they kept Geno because Petty just got his throwing shoulder smashed into the turf and isn't healthy? I'm sure Hack would benefit with taking snaps as any developmental QB would.

The one thing i real like about petty is that he will take shots down field. I can't find the article at the moment, but it discussed how the top NFL Qbs throw downfield more frequently. So it's a good trait. If someone can find the article that'd be great.

That's funny! You come on here and from your first post have been attacking others and their opinions. I called you no names, just made a statement.

I've never attacked another poster, nor will I ever do so.

Question their logic or football acumen? Yes, perhaps.

But personally attacked the, or hoped they would go away? Not my style. I have too much class for that sort of nonsense.

I'm not sure how injured Petty might be but Hack should get some extra reps as far as that goes. The whole keeping 4QB bit seems like a gambit against both Fitz killing himself again and contract talks with him next season. If they'd gotten him on a 2-3 yr deal Geno would have already been jettisoned. Based on the handling of Amaro I don't think they are going to suffer fools and non performers for very long.

I don't see how Geno would help with Fitz contract talks next season when he's also a FA.

See how things shape up with the season and the young guys. If the kids don't make progress or things don't look good with Fitz(he gets hurt, reverts or wants something like 18-20 mil off the season) then Geno becomes the priority signing on the cheap.

Geno would then end up in a camp battle with Petty to start (my money is on Petty at this point). In this scenario Hack is the still the 3rd QB and they don't draft/sign another QB.

Of course they could let both Fitz and Geno go in addition to signing somebody else to start/challenge Petty. If this is what the brain trust is thinking they should probably go ahead and get rid of Geno as soon as Petty is healthy. Like you pointed and I failed to consider, having all 4 is going to eat into reps and both Petty and Hack could use them.

He needs to learn to do some of it on his own. To be honest, watching Fitz's escapability in the pocket will be good for him. Fitz had a lot of pressure from the outside last season and he steps up as well as any QB I know. Hopefully Hack watches and learns.

I'm not one to give up on a guy based on 4 preseason games and limited practice reps. With that said, the guy doesn't look like he's close to what an NFL qb needs to be.

I read a lot about how he worked on his mechanics leading up to and after the draft, but the real evidence would come game time... Well so far he looks like the exact same guy as he was in college.

Can he improve? Sure... but nothing he has done so far has translated to helping him on the field, and it's extremely frustrating watching him right now. Especially when the guy we all wanted Paxton Lynch has shown things you simply can't teach - stronger and more accurate arm, more athleticism, pocket awareness and confidence (cockiness)...

Nobody was going to take him day two, it was a bad reach. His bust potential was very high and so far he looks fucking awful. Meanwhile Vernon Adams is the closest we've seen to a next Russell Wilson went undrafted and is in the CFL.

Yes, that will come with time, experience, watching Fitz, other QBs, some coaching, and instincts honed by knowing and trusting his OL. When a QB is having to run for his life all the time, it's hard for him to learn anything.

Your bolded phrase is patently untrue. I didn't want Lynch and I knew many others who didn't as well.

What they're showing right now doesn't really matter. What counts is when both are playing. Then we'll see who the better QB is. Lynch could wind up having better accuracy in the long run but Hack could wind up being the better QB in terms of reading Ds, changing plays at the LOS, and running an offense. Lynch wasn't running an NFL offense at 18 at a high level and reading Ds like Hack was. If Hack doesn't develop, so be it, but if I were a gambling man, I'd bet that he will and will be well worth the wait.
