TB is going with the conventional wisdom staying with Geno as the #2 ONLY because of Geno's prior real game experience. No issue with that but lets just call it what it is. Geno was annointed the #2 but he did not outplay or outperform Petty. I think the real reason why we didn't see Petty in with the 1's and/or 2's is that TB didn't want Petty showing up Geno and lighting the Qb controversy bonfire in the press. It was simply convenient to anoint Geno the #2 using the "experience" explanation then pray to God we never have to use him. Also stabilizes Geno's minimal trade value. Petty makes guys better (Studfield/Anderson). Geno does not.
Let be real here. Did Geno outplay Petty in preseason games? Maybe not but IMO Fitz didn't outplay Petty either.
But... Fitz has NFL gameday experience. So does Geno so if one wants to make the logical decision, Petty has to be #3 unless he comes in as the second coming of the GOAT. It mattered more to Petty simply to showcase what he can do and how much progress in his game has been made. Don't think TB and Mac didn't take notice either. TB has already said, they "know" Geno. Even though Geno is #2, he didn't exactly play his way into that spot. He's the default option until Petty shows what he can do with the starters. That comes either due to injury to Geno after the injury to Fitz OR next preseason when either Fitz or Geno or both are gone. That's why Petty was kept off the IR and the PS. The Jets already have a good idea of what Petty can become with time and guidance. They already know what Geno can do and what Fitz is and isn't capable of. The last question left to answer is how fast Mac's pet project can develop. Mac has more invested in Hack than Petty so that bears watching over the next several years.
