More former Jets released.. Antonio Allen yesterday, (which shocked me) Dalton Freeman, Stevan Ridley, Shaq Evans, Kenrick Ellis.
According to Spotrac we still have around $3 million in cap space. A couple of restructures can possibly get Sitton in here which adds much needed stability to the right side of the offensive line and finally adds some depth in the form of Brian Winters. I'd cut Giacomini in a heartbeat to upgrade the right guard spot, which instantly makes the right tackle spot better. Get it done Mac! www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/cap/ What's a little confusing to me is why Brick has a dead cap hit? I thought players forefeited that money when they retire? In any case, my understanding of the cap is that dead money does not count against the actual salary cap but just comes out of the owners pocket. Kind of funny to see we owe a guy named Quenton Bundrage $333 though. Good for that guy. A sum Geno definitely wouldn't pay.
We still have to sign a practice squad. Doesn't this say we are over by 2M? Est. Cap Space (All):$-2,217,179 http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/cap/
The minimum they make is roughly $110,000 so subtract about a million and we still have $2 million to work with.
Not much, 1.5 mil...what killed us is cutting Milliner today, that's 4M in dead money plus what it costs for the guy that replaced him..like I said earlier he must have really pissed a lot of people off.
Totally agree about cutting Breno. Could sign Sitton and bring on a better blocking TE with that savings (i believe 4.375M caps savings by cutting Breno).. definitely would improve our pass pro. i wouldn't mind a right side of Sitton and Qvale. I actually like how Winters has come on, but would prefer that steady vet next to the unproven Qvale.
Brian Winters simply has not improved since being drafted. I'm not sure of our salary cap but he would be a great addition 3 time Pro Bowl player. He could be just as great as Alan Faneca.
Every team in the league is gonna try to sign this guy. He certainly would look good in green, though.
Another player I like as an FA addition would be Eric Kush (I actually liked him before he was featured on Hard Knocks). He may not be the brightest candle on the cake, but he can play C and OG, is still relatively young (26 years old), would play for small money and is certainly better than anything we have at RG (Winters, Dozier,...). In contrast, however, another OG a lot of people here are talking about is completely done: Jahri Evans. He once was the best OG in the league, but after I saw him playing in the preseason I'm convinced his career is coming to an end (and I'm not the only one who sees it this way: "Astute Seahawks analyst Rob Rang of CBS Sports observed that Evans was "done" after watching him in the preseason, and the Seahawks ostensibly agree.")
Like others have mentioned, our Jets don't have the salary cap needed in order to pursue a big name offensive lineman, such as Josh Sitton. I'm guessing at least 10-15 teams will inquire about his services. He would've been ideal for the Jets of 2016 too. He's only 30 years of age when compared to Jahri Evans who's 33. And Winters would've then gave value as added depth at Guard. Unfortunate.
I went to a Packers forum to try and figure out the why. Most fans were surprised, some upset, one guy said this: I also read a quote from Sitton himself about the release and he was professional about it and seemed like he still wants to play. The Packers are an outstanding organization and I agree, there MUST be a good reason for this release. Still - I hope the Jets are at the very least investigating the situation.
From NFL.com He's been a second-team All-Pro three seasons running and finished 2015 as the league's fifth-rated guard, per Pro Football Focus. So I think he has a lot left in the tank...he was due 6.5 million and I think the Packers had someone in house that could be a worthy option while saving that much money...
