I strongly disagree. Winning 3 road games before making the Super Bowl is just too difficult for an NFL team to accomplish (just ask the 2009 & 2010 Jet teams. It all starts with winning the division. 2015: Denver Broncos. 2014: New England Patriots. 2013: Seattle Seahawks. 2012: Baltimore Ravens. 2011: New York Giants. 2009: New Orleans Saints. 2008: Pittsburgh Steelers. 2006: Indianapolis Colts. 2004: New England Patriots. 2003: New England Patriots. 2002: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 2001: New England Patriots. As you can see (since the start of the 2000's) 12 of the previous 16 Super Bowl Winners (.750%) were also divisional champions. These Jets of 2016 not only have a fighting chance of stealing the East division from N.E with Brady missing 4 games (plus a potential rust factor upon return) but a real chance of securing a top two spot of the AFC Conference and a bye week. If the goal is a top two seed, game one at home against Cincinnati is a must win because the Bengals could very well compete for a top two seed as well. Take care of Cincinnati opening day and the sky becomes the limit.
I think our surprise win out of that early stretch is vs Seattle. They're already a completely different team on the road. Then you have to consider that they have what's universally considered to be the worst offensive line in the NFL. I think we bully them up front all day and hold them to something like 6 or 7 points. Then we get hyped up by the national media only to lay an egg in Pittsburgh the next week.
That's what we do. Or did. I really hope that our new regime can alter that modus operandi. That's Latin for "same old shit".
doubtful... even if they go 0-4 with garrapollo and brady struggles early they are probably still looking at 8-9 wins at the least brady going 8-4 8-8 is probably our ceiling, with a more likely 6-10 type season
In 2008, it was the year for the Dolphins. How did that work out for them? I stopped wondering if it was the year years ago. When the Jets have the better team, then it'll matter.
IMO that one of the big things that must change under this regime. One, they need to stop "spitting the bit" (to quote Steinbrenner) every time they start to taste success and have expectations placed on them. Two, they need to stop losing to effing Pittsburgh and Baltimore. I'm sick of losing to those two damned teams. Both teams draft well for the most part and have stable leadership. If we want to claim any kind of respectability and being an "elite" or top team, we have to start consistently beating teams like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, KC, Green Bay, Seattle.
I thought that way during the winter and spring. Now, I'm starting to get much more optimistic. It all hinges on Fitz. If he stays healthy and plays like last year, with improved STs, greater depth, greater speed on D, another year in both systems, and with some excellent new offensive talent, I definitely think we're capable of winning 10-11 games, maybe more. If he gets injured or plays like he has this preseason and/or like most of his career, we could only win 6-8 games. I don't think we can be any worse than that because of our D and improved STs.
I said it's more important to finish better than them in the postseason than the regular season. u strongly disagree with that? really? knocking them out in the postseason is obviously more important than having a better regular season record than them. i don't understand you guys sometimes...
I'm personally concerned about the lack of depth at every position except DL and S. I'm hoping we're in most games like last year and play good fundamental ball.
But if you go back one more year, you have the wild card Baltimore Ravens as the champs. Which undercuts your point. Over the last 17 years (rather than 16), 66.6% of all playoff teams (8 of 12 every year) were division winners, but remarkably, only 70.5% (12 of 17) of Supe winners won their division. So the difference is negligible. In other words, it certainly SEEMS like winning the division would give you a tremendous advantage, but in fact the numbers don't actually support this.
What team are you speaking of, because it certainly isn't the Jets. The Jets have the best depth at WR that they've had in a long time, maybe ever. They have good depth at RB and LB and it's better at CB than it's been in a while. The only positions where there isn't good depth is QB, OL and TE.
3 rookies, Thompkins and Enunwa is depth at WR? Sorry man, we have 2 entirely different perspectives here and the gap is too large to close. If this is good depth, what would you call Arizona WR corp with JJ nelson at #4? Same with your LB statement--Erin Henderson and a rookie starting with a 2nd year unproven Maudlin. Who's the depth--Catapano and another rookie? If you want to actually engage in this conversation, how about stating the players you are referring to and how they can be considered good depth. Otherwise you're just trolling. Good luck.
At the end of the day the biggest factor in the NFL is injuries. If we can stay healthy we have a great shot. A key injury on the oline or to Fitz or Marshall it can be a long season.
Yes. Name better depth at WR the Jets have had at any time during the last 5-10 years. It certainly isn't the likes of David Nelson, Greg Salas, Stephen Hill, and/or Jeremy Kerley. I didn't say it was the best in the NFL or even top 10, I just said it was the best the Jets have had in a long time. It's certainly better than the ridiculously negative, cynical and bleak perspective you have. Erin Henderson is an experienced pro. He was very good in Minny before his career got derailed with substance abuse. He played very well last year. Bruce Carter and Lee are better depth at ILB than the Jets have had in at least 10 years. So what if Jenkins is a rookie and Mauldin's a 2nd year player? They have more speed, coverage ability than anyone the Jets have started at OLB in 10-20 years. I'd rather have Catapano and Bishop than Bellore, Enemkpali, or the other stiffs the Jets have had as backups over the last 10 years or so. Have you even watched the Jets during the last 20 years or paid any attention to who the depth was? You couldn't have and make the ridiculous statement you did.
Man, I sure hope so. The sad thing is that if Brady were suspended last year as originally planned, the Jets likely win the division as NE probably starts 0-2. The Jets have a tougher schedule this year, but the division is definitely up for grabs, provided the Jets can survive the early part of the schedule.
By that logic Denver, who had shit QB play last year and still win the Super Bowl, or the Baltimore Ravens who have never had a great QB should never have won SuperBowls either...... You don't necessarily need the best QB.....
I didn't even mention the QB position. I said the best team. And that also includes coaching staff and FO. Cheating scandals aside, they have proven year in and year out that they are the better team. I hate it, but it's true.
We better win it all this year, unless you think Petty or Hack can win it all for us next year.....this is our year!!!
