Yeah, they're on the team already. The hope was that he could play above the guys we have, it's disappointing in that he was a draft pick with the potential for that. He's the first draft pick of this regime to go....unless he lands on the PS
At this point in the preseason, here is my expectation for the final 53 man roster: QB: Fitzpatrick, Smith*, Petty, Hackenberg HB: Forte, Powell, Robinson FB: Bohannon* WR: Marshall, Decker, Enunwa, Peake, Anderson, Marshall TE: Davis, Amaro, Sudfeld* OT: Clady, Qvale, Ijalana*, Shell OG: Carpenter, Winters, Johnson* C: Mangold DE: Wilkerson, Richardson, Williams, Jenkins DT: McLendon, Harris*, Simon* OLB: Mauldin, Jenkins, Catapano, Reilly*, Stanford* ILB: Harris, Henderson, Lee, Carter CB: Revis, Skrine, Williams, Burris, Milliner* FS: Gilchrist, Martin* SS: Pryor, Miles K: Folk P: Edwards LS: Purdum PUP: Smith, Giacomini IR: Pierce I've got 11 guys with a * indicating I'm not so sure about them. If not final cuts, then through free agency maneuvers after the league has finished their cuts. Also guys I haven't listed that I think have a shot are: Dozier, Bishop, T. Jones, Middleton, Thompkins, Ross Dozier in particular I think is a waste and the Jets would be better off searching FA for a replacement.
Deion Barnes, Linebacker: While he drew rave reviews early on at OTAs he was not making plays at practice or in games Helva Matungulu, Defensive End Unfortunately for him he was always little more than a camp body • Jesse Davis, Offensive Lineman Unfortunately for him he was always little more than a camp body • Terry Williams, Running Back Unfortunately for him he was always little more than a camp body • Ross Martin, Kicker: Martin struggled in the Jets first two preseason games and lost the battle at that stage • Jason Vander Laan, Tight End: A college quarterback, Vander Laan flashed several times for the Jets in training camp but was very raw as he tried to transition to TE. He's considered a practice squad candidate, NJ Advance Media was told. • Kyle Friend, Center Unfortunately for him he was always little more than a camp body • Jarvis Harrison, Guard: A fifth-round pick by the Jets in 2015 whose attitude and love of the game meant he fell further than his ability would have merited. He struggled as a rookie, and failed to impress the coaches this summer and had not any positive reports • Lache Seastrunk, Running back Unfortunately for him he was always little more than a camp body • Shelby Harris, Defensive Line Find this a little odd as he flashed in the first two preseason games and looked decent enough to warrant a place on PS • Kyle Williams, Receiver: Unfortunately for him he was always little more than a camp body and struggled to get into pads
At this point, whether most teams do it or not, the correct move would be to keep four quarterbacks. If Hack or Petty go to the practice squad they're as good as gone. For a franchise that's been as quarterback deprived as any in the league that's not the Browns or Rams (post-Warner) we need to hedge our bet in keeping as many possible options around as we can. Cut Bohanon and only keep two tightends. They don't contribute anyway so I'd rather keep the potential of pulling a franchise quarterback out of one of these guys than some shitty fullback who can't block with 17 career receptions/20 career rushes in 3 irrelevant seasons. It'd be different if the fullbacks/tightends could at least formidably block, but they can't and Gailey doesn't put shitty options on the field. They're a waste of a roster spot.
+100 on most...But TE is glaring error...To me its a no brainer that Sudfeld eaned his job and Amaro, Davis are gone Last wr spot will b between Ross and Marshall Dee Milliner is history Otherwise I think you nailed it
While I'd like for you to be right about the TE, I think they'll keep Amaro for his "potential" and Davis because he's the only TE on the team that can block, so he fills a niche that no one else does. He's got some value in goal line and short yardage situations. For the most part he's terrible but that's the logic. Sudfeld is like Amaro but without Amaro's "potential". If anything, I expect Sudfeld is the one in real danger of losing his spot. Milliner keeps his spot because the Jets don't save any money on the cap by cutting him. If they're going to pay him, may as well make him earn it. I could totally see Ross making the team but not at the expense of Marshall. I think if they keep Ross, it means someone like Sudfeld is out. I'm already down one pick with Shelby Harris so maybe I'll move that prediction to him.
Am surprised about Harris, but the CS obviously wasn't as impressed as we were. He may not have been PS eligible. They are probably just doing the right thing and giving him a chance to catch on somewhere else.
I think Bishop has a better shot than Reilly or Stanford of making the roster. Reilly is way down the depth chart and has done nothing in TC. I may be mistaken, but isn't Stanford and ILB, rather than OLB? I'd be shocked if the Jets keep 3 TEs. IMO both Middleton and Ross deserve a roster spot more than Sudfeld. Bohanon may make the team as Bowles seems to like him, but for the life of me, I can't see why. I think he's a wasted roster spot. He's not that good a blocker and isn't a very good ball carrier. He's a pretty good receiver, but the Jets already have 3 RBs who can catch the ball. He's not needed.
` Reilly has done nothing because he's been injured. He literally isn't playing right now. Willie Colon on a Jets Nation recently said that from his time with the team, he felt that Reilly was better than Mauldin because of his power. I don't know for sure but I expect they'll keep him around. I like Bishop but he's exactly the kind of player you can stash on the practice squad and not worry that the player will be swept away by another team. Stanford is an OLB technically but I believe he's capable of playing inside or outside. His value to this team is on special teams anyway. The Jets would have to be totally decimated with injuries for him to see any playing time with the starting defense. I'm not sure the Jets will keep 3 TEs either. I'm not sold on Sudfeld providing much (if any) value. The only reason I can see them keeping him around is if Amaro is still hurt and they want another option. Bohannon is useful in specific situations and formations as a blocker, which is why he'll earn a spot.
He may be injured now, but according to reports I've read, he has done nothing since OTAs when he was healthy. I disagree about Bishop being able to be stashed on the PS. Pass rushers are at a premium and some team would snatch him up. Reilly's only real value is STs and maybe vs the run. He's too slow, and is not able to generate any pressure on opposing QBs or cover receivers. In addition, he's older (28). We're in agreement regarding Sudfeld.
As was I oh well ... semms like Lawrence Thomas is a lock to make the 53 ... well at least for one week until Sheldon returns ...
Reilly doesn't seem to have the burst off the edge at all to be any sort of factor in passing situations. He has been relentless when given the chance in preseason and limited regular season action which is always a good sign for a pass rusher. He's a quality depth signing especially because he's a good special teamer, something that remains to be seen with Bishop and Catapano (although it's not impossible to see it happening if they're put into that role). Every time I see Bohanon try to setup a linebacker with an I-Form iso block he gets blown up or beat to the spot. Fullbacks seem to be a dime a dozen and somehow we got stuck with the shittiest one in the league. Just my opinion though.
And the last 3 cuts this week were all waived with an injured designation running back Romar Morris, defensive lineman Jake Ceresna, and safety Dion Bailey so if unclaimed the Jets can put on IR. Romar Morris made a few plays in the second preseason game and seemed to be ready to get a run as others were injured but then R Miles "clocked" him in a practice session and he did not return. Worth stashing on IR to let him have a crack at the final RB spot next season. Ceresna was a very late addition to the squad - replaced the disappearing Bilukidi - so I did not see any reports one way or the other. Given he was on the street and available in early August I was surprised he was not in the original batch and I do not see him making IR unless he impressed the CS with his ability to pick up the D. Dion Bailey had a reasonable camp but suffered a few times when he was unable to practice due to injuries and also was the guy who got frustrated with a lack of opportunities. He had a few nice plays and picked Hack off twice in one session so again he is young and the FO like him having brought him over from Seattle last year so another they stash on IR. Getting down to the serious end of the decision making and 21 more guys will be on the street next week. It is possible they try to get 1 or 2 of the first round of cuts onto the PS - depends on the vets who fall by the wayside next week.
Let’s assume the Jets keep 4 QBs – then to get to 53 they need cut 21 more - as Sheldon is suspended week 1 we dodge a cut Tier 4 RB Dominuque Williams, Julian Howsare, Antone Smith (3) Both Williams and Howsare are PS candidates given the lack of depth at RB on the roster - only 3 RBs kept but if one gets hurt then we need to move Williams up Tier 4 WR Jeremy Ross, Chandler Worthy (5) Ross will feel hard done by here and it is between him and J Marshall – if it is Marshall who gets cut look for him to be a candidate for the PS Tier 4 OL Craig Watts, Dahon Taylor, Mike Liedtke (8) Watts has done well and has run with the second team and is likely to be a PS candidate, they could put Breno on PUP with Devin Smith. This would allow them evaluate Qvale and Ijalana if they feel it is worth the risk but not needed in the scenario here but it would give them an additional player elsewhere but would mean another year lost for D Smith . Tier 3 TE Wes Saxton, Brandon Bostick, Tier 4 TE Jerome Cunningham, (11) This is a tough call but Bostick is cut (he has teams value) as the Jets retain K Davis for his blocking, Amaro for his potential. Saxton had a very quiet camp and may not get a look for the PS this time around Tier 4 DL Claude Pelon, Tarow Barney, (13) Pelon is a PS candidate as is Thomas (not listed as Sheldon has to sit for week 1) This is where it gets really interesting as none of the OLB’s has really distanced themselves and some of those who had an early lead entering OTAs had poor camps Tier 3 LB Taiwan Jones, Trevor Reilly, Tier 4 LB Julian Stanford, Josh Martin (17) Both Stanford and Martin have outside shots at a spot but more likely they move onto the PS while Jones also looks like a PS candidate Tier 4 CB Kevin Short, Daryl Morris, Bryson Keeton (20) Daryl Morris could beat McDougle out but only if McDougle fails to convince CS he can get healthy. Many gave Morris a shot but he was awful late on against the Giants. May have done enough to lock up the 9th PS place assigned here Final cut is tough and it is UDFA Doug Middleton who did nothing wrong butg lost momentum when he got injured and takes the final PS place. This assumes Mac does not tinker at the bottom of the roster like he did last year - if J Marshall makes the final 53 then there is a PS place for grabs and I would look at VanDerLann who they like but is too raw and Harris (assuming he has eligibility)
Will, I have to disagree with some of your rankings. Ross a Tier 4? How in the world do you come up with that? He's probably more likely to make the team than Jalin Marshall, unless Bowles opts for upside and speed over experience. Similarly, I don't see Chandler Worthy as a Tier 5. If Ross is waived and Marshall makes the team, Ross will likely get signed elsewhere. The Jets would need Worthy as a backup in case Marshall struggles or has problems with fumbles or drops. The same goes if Ross makes the team and Jalin Marshall is cut. He will most likely get scooped up by someone and again the Jets would need Worthy on the PS as insurance. I also don't see how you claim Trevor Reilly is a Tier 3 candidate. He was at the bottom of the Jets depth chart at OLB. He is slow and 28 or 29. He is one-dimensional vs the run and has some STs value. I think Stanford and possibly Martin are better prospects to stick, unless it his STs play that saves Reilly a spot on the roster. Finally, I am really puzzled how you have Darryl Morris as a Tier Candidate with the likes of Short and Keeton, both of whom are flat out awful. Morris had a good camp and played pretty well in the first 2 preseason games. He could easily beat out McDougle for the last CB spot on the team.
