Holy moly....so now the GM would face a media bath for cutting Geno f'n Smith if Fitz got hurt and Petty stunk up the joint kinda like Geno has for going on 3 seasons now? That's priceless. How about the media firestorm if Mac cut/traded Petty and kept Geno f'n Smith this year and Petty reaches his potential which is still unknown after he clearly outplayed Geno all preseason? Hindsight is always 20-20.
I think they want hack to be able to compete for starting QB next year. That cannot happen if they IR him. He needs to be getting reps and seeing defenses. I think the most likely scenario remains geno getting cut/traded before cutdowns.
Considering we were dead by end of week 12, you've essentially shown how awesome Geno can be when we are playing pointless, almost pre-season football. If you take the same 6 game sample size of when we were playing with some hope/expectation of maybe perhaps having some success he's.... 92/173 (53.18%), 973yds, 5TD-8INT's. Average QB rating of 51.25 That's why his chances at catching on somewhere else are limited. When the pressure to perform is on, he shits the bed. He's not even close to EJ over at Rexland and it says something when we were considering Brian Hoyer as a desirable acquistion during the Fitz holdout.
This business about how we have to keep Geno because he is the only backup QB who has played in the league is just a bunch of nonsense. How many games did Marcus Mariota have to start in previous seasons before he became a starter? So what if Fitz goes down, somebody has to play and it might as well be someone we haven't seen yet. If a healthy Fitz could lead us to 10-6 again against this schedule, do you really think Geno would lead us to that record if Fitz got hurt? It's only media idiots who believe that nonsense. In 2013 the Bills had EJ Manuel as the starter, backed up by Thaddeus Lewis and Jeff Tuel. They went 6-10. In 2014 they had Kyle Orton backed up by EJ Manuel, they went 9-7. In 2015 they had Tyrod Taylor backed up by EJ Manuel, they went 8-8. The Pats have had Brady backed up by Ryan Mallet, who never started, for 3 years, followed by Garoppolo, who has never started, I don't need to tell you their record the last five years. They started 2008 with Brady and Matt Cassel, who never even started in college, yet they COACHED HIM UP and went 11-5 that year. The point is, if you don't have a QB, it doesn't matter who your backups are, and if you do and have a coaching staff, it also doesn't matter who your backup is. The question is, do you want to keep Geno to fill the EJ Manuel mold, or do you want to give Petty and Hackenberg a chance to fill in, start, get reps or whatever to find out if you have a QB. I know what I would do. Ron
Doesn't seem like they seem to be interested in getting game reps right now I still think we roll with 4 QBs or Hack is IR'ed....unless someone offers something decent for Geno Doubt we cut a backup QB making peanuts with game experience and playmaking ability (Most backups are bad NFL QBs before you guys freak out)
It's one thing to be airing it out all over 3rd string defenses playing vanilla but Petty is very much unproven against real NFL defenses that will be throwing the kitchen sink at him...It's literally night and day Geno, while not very good, and particularly bad last game, can atleast hold the fort and make some plays.....It can be much much worse than him. Not saying Petty would be worse and he might even be great one day, but its a huge gamble Maybe the coaches know more than the fans do here? It's great to see Petty doing well but so did Brett Ratliff, Brooks Bollinger, Matt Simms, Eric Ainge, and the list goes on in similar situations
The worry is that those plays he makes are going to be INT's, fumbles and drive killers and what do we learn from that..........nothing. It's just Geno being Geno before his contract runs out. If its Bryce who's thrown in and kills drives then at least we can see him in live action make an assessment of him and know wheter he has the potential to start next year with a steady vet at #2 or wheter we'll be looking for a serviceable starter to bridge the gap to Hack.
Fitz is a much bigger injury risk....I didn't even think that far ahead yet. I was actually hoping we signed Foles as the backup or someone like him if Fitz wasn't happening
Well if Geno is destroying our chances to win as the backup it would be a quick hook scenario where we would be forced to sink or swim with Petty I just think it's a huge risk....let's see who the coaching staff agrees with I wouldn't be shocked at anything they do
I guess if you're a big Geno Smith fan it's a huge risk to not have him on the roster. For anyone else it's a step in the right direction. Dude sucks.
He's not gonna compete for anything until he gets his mechanics fixed. He's not gonna play this year, and there will be little or no snaps for him even if he isn't IR'd. 3rd string QBs get little or no reps during the season. Hack doesn't need any reps during the season. He doesn't need to furth ingrain his poor mechanics. The few reps he would get won't do bubkis towards developing him. Your saying that he needs reps doesn't make it so. He can study film to see defenses and begin focusing on his footwork. I get that unless you're a coach, teacher, have been a baseball pitcher, or taken a lot of golf or tennis lessons, it's very difficult to understand just how hard it is to change body mechanics and the isolated, focused work that it takes. But believe me, it does. Taking a bunch of reps would slow down Hack's progress, not help him or speed it up. It would make it harder for him to change his mechanics in the offseason. I don't think they will IR a QB, but if they do, it will be Hack. IRing Petty makes zero sense.
Hopefully it never comes to needing the backup.....That would mean Fitz is healthy and playing well I understand you're all frustrated with the possible backup QB and Petty is coming off a huge game but snap decisions can be costly If it ends up being Petty as the backup that would prove that he's made huge progress in other areas behind the scenes and at practice.........not just because he lit up a bunch of arena football players that aren't blitzing I trust them to make the right call here....Petty is looking promising which I love to see but it's really not the greatest evaluation
I have trouble understanding those who place/confer so much preferential status on Geno simply by virtue of his starting experience when he has basically stunk (and continues stinking) despite all the time and experience he's had as an NFL starter and trying to develop his game into something even remotely resembling consistency, smart decision making and leadership ability. Petty has displayed more growth and development in one year than Smith has over his entire career.
The media will bitch about anything. Nowadays Jets FO gives them nothing to chew on, not for free. The days of making a living by sticking a mic into fat HC's face are over. So they will be trying to create an opinion piece from anything. What I absolutely love about this FO is the silence. They'll do what's right and fuck the media.
yea, Petty is unproven against NFl defenses, but Geno is proven to be shit against those same defenses! You have to start comparing Petty to Geno, not Petty against some theoretical opposition. As of right now, 2 games into PS, Petty is better than Geno. If you have to play a BU, you play the better one. That's it, end of story.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Petty didn't look good his first 2 series. To be honest I think as fans we should be worried about the 1st string QB. Fitz hasnt looked good at all.
Give them nothing, ever. They're nothing but trouble. Some of them are downright ratty.Taking some of their analysis seriously is a fucking joke. There's a few story lines, mainly the QB's, and there's a few people on here that are more concerned about what the press are saying than what is actually happening on the field. They actually think the FO policy should be conducted with consideration to what the media is saying. They buy into the first negative thing written or spoken by some turd looking for attention. So when somebody says something negative about Darron Lee for instance, fans dive right in to the deep water with it and can't even begin to consider or perceive another perspective. They're convinced it's a fucking catastrophe or some shit, lol. Maybe a hangover from the previous years side show bs?
