Could be the case, it definitely hasn't worked. He's had all the opportunity to seize the job. Gailey and the Jets have him a chance these past 2 seasons and Geno has blown it. He has 1 or 2 more preseason games left to prove his worth
Maybe. But either way he was going express support for Geno. If what you're saying is true it would support my point that Gailey's public support for Geno was meant for the media. And because they didn't trust Geno, or imo, even knew already they didn't want him to start, they just plain wanted Fitz back this year for the team to compete on the field. If Fitz signed somewhere else Gailey would have had to have supported Geno all along.
Have a question? I already know of the replys. But if Geno looks great in the next game? Petty looks like shit? Then what do u say? Yes I like Geno but he did look like shit against the Skins and Petty looked good. But it was his first game he looked good in.
Even if petty looks great we really have to temper our expectations of the kid. It's nice to see him progress - really nice. But there's a world of difference between facing guys who will be bagging groceries in September playing in a vanilla scheme and playing against actual nfl caliber talents who have had a week to game plan. If we cut Geno and Fitz gets hurt for any length of time our season is going straight to the shitter. Some might argue that would be the same result if Geno is forced to start. But there's at least a sliver of a hope that Gailey can get enough out of Geno to be in the playoff hunt. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Geno has flashed 'great' in the past (fins game) but I don't think even his most optimistic supporter sees Eugene on our roster next year so it's really a case (for me) of how Petty plays and wheter he is acceptable as back-up to Fitz and therefore wheter we are forced to go with 4 QB's or the standard 3. I can't see us getting anything for Geno in a trade as he's simply not a quantitive step-up in value over other current #2's to justify a loss of pick. At best I see him being picked up as a third stringer with potential development into a back-up role depending on his ability to pick up the playbook and impress in practice. Bryce might get us a pick from another team who sees the same 4th round potential in him that we did with the additional bonus of knowing that we did the development work for them plus the extra time and lower cost of his contract in comparison to Geno.
Why does that sliver of hope not exist for Petty? I mean you're absolutely right that Petty is facing lower than starter level competition in preseason but so is Geno and he's out playing Geno. Geno is in year four and still has major issues as a QB. I don't see any reason to be hopeful about an extended period of Geno Smith starting. With Petty there's hope that he can grow into a guy that can be good against the starters.
I have no hope that Petty can keep us in any sort of hunt for the playoffs. He was drafted raw and still has a lot to learn. If we are forced to start Petty I personally feel that it will eliminate any chance of winning this year and possibly stunt his growth. I'm no coach or scout. I don't see him practice. That's just my gut feeling about where he should be based on his lack of pro refinement coming out of college. I don't see carrying 4 QBs as that big of a detriment that I would want to expose him too soon. Let's carry 4. If Fitz gets hurt - play Geno until we are eliminated from playoff contention. Then hand the keys over to Petty. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Yea well Petty has been playing Madden, so he's probably got the pro game down now. Carrying four hurts the roster and it hurts the development of Petty & Hack because they lose out on snaps. I see an outside shot of keeping for 4 QB's for a short period - maybe while Devon Smith is still PUP'd.
Petty can outplay Geno 10 to 1 in PS and Mac would be insane to cut Geno. HUGE risk. Mac took the gamble last year when Fitz was out for thumb surgery and no one knew when he'd be back, and it paid off. But if Mac cuts Geno and Fitz goes down, we will lose however many games we play with Petty under center. 1? 2? 3? 4? 5? 6? EVERYONE (owner, media, team, fans) will be second guessing Mac's decision to cut Geno. Especially if we were doing good before Fitz went down and only needed to win a few more games to make the POs. If Mac DOES cut Geno, he definitely has a vet in mind he can bring in quickly if need be.
See this is what I don't get. Why are games considered losses with Petty but not with Geno? Like Geno is good? He's not. If Petty was out there in preseason looking lost, uncomfortable or unable to run the offense I'd get it but he's not. He looks very comfortable, is going through his progressions and making plays. He's not doing everything right but he's doing enough right to make me think there wouldn't be much of a drop off from Geno to him, if any.

I was just saying that IF 1) Geno gets cut, and 2) Fitz gets hurt, and 3) Petty is forced to start and 4) it ruins our season, THEN there will be a ton of second guessers....ESPN, Daily News, Woddy's friends on the golf course, TGG, fellow GMs, on and on. The question will be "Why did MacCagnan cut his only back up QB with NFL experience just to hold onto a fringe player at the very bottom of the roster?????". I'm not saying Mac WON'T cut Geno, just that this would be a nightmare scenario if he DOES cut Geno.
At some point our GM has to put on his big boy pants, take a chance and try to field a QB of the future. It's not Fitz or Geno and it won't be anyone with starting experience. I hope Mac doesn't run this team with a shriveled up dick.
Is there another team in the NFL that will go anywhere with their back up QB? Of course you want the best guy you can find, but let's not act like Geno is a world beater. He's got experience, that's it. Experience alone doesn't make him the best choice. We've seen in this preseason what Geno has been his entire time in the NFL. Meh. We have to move on from the past, might as well bite the bullet now. See what we have in these two kids.
then there are those that think if fitz is hurt it makes not difference who is the back up qb is with this schedule we wont be going far
Huh? The nightmare is the ruined season, not what people say about it. When you start making decisions based on what ESPN might say if things go sour, your life is over.
Time for him to face a higher level of competition in training camp and preseason games. I like Petty's progression so far this off-season, but I want to see that against 1st and 2nd string players too. Would like to see him be the 2nd QB off the bench in the Giants game. Even if he doesn't light the world up, to show some command of the huddle is encouraging.
