Lots of good posts in this thread.

imo, for those saying "It's this or that," it's both. If we didn't have this unusual Petty/Geno situation, of course Hack would be getting live snaps.

    And they would be ugly.

They can't play Hack.. His mechanics are being rebuilt from the ground up by Chan. When ARod came out and fell in the draft his mechanics were also terrible. Remember how he use to hold the ball all up high and weird... That took YEARS to fix.. Hacks accuracy and footwork will take years as well. The kid has it between the ears and has a great attitude but playing him now is useless for us and him.

Plus they have a serious qb competition for #2 and need to make sure Petty can be the guy if they cut Geno...

So in a nutshell Hack isn't ready and the #2 competition is a priority.

I agree but who does that but the Jets drafting a QB that high and not even playing him first 2 games. We had a few positions that needed to be addressed in the draft and they took Hackenberg.

It will be hard to sell keeping 4 QB's if one of them never plays.

He is not in their immediate plans at all. He is a developmental QB. Him not playing the first 3 preseason games mean less than nothing.

I have no problem with the team keeping him in moth balls for the entire season. Watch, listen, practice and be ready. Next season he will get a chance.

Part of me agrees with you, another part has a vomitous convulsion at the memories of Sanchez and Smith being thrown into the fire when they weren't even close to ready.

I know that reality should fall somewhere in the middle, but I'm still not sure if I'm confident or scared of this current FO.

Seriously? So Hack is already a wasted pick? OMG some of you guys are too much. QBs are infinitely more valuable and important that OL. QBs with prototypical size, a cannon for an arm, and a football IQ that's off the charts don't come along every day. So he has some accuracy issues. If he's coachable at all, those can be fixed with proper mechanics. It will take some time to fix those mechanics, but if the Jets are patient and work with him on those mechanics, they could have their franchise QB for the next 15 years.

Hack is only 21. His mechanics could get fixed during the offseason and he could win the starting QB job next summer.

Mac's player evaluation skills are the best we've had around here since the days of Weeb. If he thinks Hack can be the real deal and is a better prospect than Prescott, then I certainly trust him more than I do posters on a fan site.

Oh no. You don't understand. If he's not perfect and ready to play from the get-go, he's a wasted pick and a bust. Get with the Jets fan program. ;)

I'll say this: I'd rather Hackenberg not play than see him look like Goff looks right now. Yikes.

Protected? You must be joking. He hasn't played because he is the farthest away of the four QB's on our team, of being an NFL starter. The only reason he was drafted, was because the front office didn't know if we would get Fitz back or not. He hasn't played because he is our worst QB, not because of the common delusion that he is being broken in slowly to protect him.
Protect him from what? Sucking in the future? He may not be here after the pre-season. He isn't better than Petty. He doesn't have 1/4 of the experience of Geno. Just because he was a 2nd round pick, doesn't put him in front of Petty. Who knows, if Petty was in this QB draft class, he may have went 1st round.
Again, this idea of growing and molding players slowly is overblown.
You can either play now or you can't, some never will.
Geno sucks, Nacho sucked, and they didn't get that way from playing too soon. 1-2years at the most to learn the system and build chemistry with team mates, and a pro QB should be ready to play. If not, why is he a pro in the first place? The idea of some 3-5 year plan is a stupid idea, that holds a team back by costing money, and causing a log jam of indecisiveness at a position.
    IMO

I'm sorry, but I don't get this argument... isn't a preseaspn game the place where you'd like to see if a QB can sustain mechanically changes made during the offseason? I don't remember that stopping the Jets from getting Petty live reps last season. They can rebuild his footwork all they want, but countless QBS have abandoned their mechanical tweaking in live game action... a series or two in preseason game won't hurt. Does Bryce Petty really have to play five series against third stringers?

The guy was a top fifty pick,,, get him so reps in live action. The way this is going I won't be suprised if they spend another top fifty pick on a QB next draft.

I'd prefer to see the Jets not hide the QB they took with a top fifty pick... let him take his licks and wounds.

Man, you sure you didn't mean to post in "The Drunk Tank"?
You think they drafted Hackenberg because they didn't know if they would get Fitz back?
You think they may cut a 2nd round QB pick after the preseason?
Sure you make some true statements, like he is currently the worst of the 4 QBs, way to go out there on a limb with that proclamation.
Not sure where you came up with a 3-5 year plan, don't remember anyone suggesting up to 5 years to groom a QB. I mean Rodgers didn't start until year 4 but that was because he had a HOF QB in front of him.

Dude you lost me with the "QB being more important than OL" debacle.
In any level of football, the game is won and lost where? QB's? I don't think so, EVER!

So on draft day, did you talk to Fitz?
Wasn't he signed a few weeks ago, and the draft was when? I'm the drunk one?

Does Hack have a HOF QB anywhere in front of him?
So why doesn't it jump out at you why he hasn't even taken a pre-season snap? Wow dude

Hack isn't playing because it doesn't matter. We have to decide on Petty/Geno. We are really working Petty right now.

All the success in the world in pre-season doesn't mean a damn for Hack. It doesn't hurt him sitting. He is either gonna have it or he's not.

He won't be called upon for another 2-3 years. Our situation doesn't call for him playing right now. We have the best QB situation this team has ever had and people are still b****ing.
