I think Geno's confidence is the direct reason why he's not visualizing plays. It appears to me that he's rushing his reads, as though his mental clock is sped up. He seems afraid to make a mistake. A stark difference between him and Petty right now is that Petty is attacking vertically while Geno is looking for safe dump options. I'm completely speculating but I think Geno is so nervous about making mistakes that the mistakes are coming naturally as a result. He needs to loosen up and let rip with that arm of his.
I believe bolded is exactly what's going on. Geno had phenomenal games in the past, like that perfect Dolphins game. There is one common denominator for the good games: they were meaningless and he was undisputed starter. Meaning he plays well when he plays without worry, when he has no pressure, nothing on the line. Conversely pressure means mistakes. This is a sign of emotional vulnerability, the same trait he showed back in the draft when he fell to the 2nd round. At the time I didn't think it was a big deal, but now it's apparent that Geno simply can't handle the pressure, it's in his nature. Unfortunately, this is not something you can teach and no amount of physical talent will cover it.
I think you hit the nail on the head. NFL QB's need to be mentally tough. Geno always comes off as thin skinned. From his draft day to cursing out abusive fans to his strange tweets claiming how tough he is or how hard he works to the argument with the flight attendant. It just seems like things easily get under his skin and he's not able to focus on the important things.
You guys might be right...he just seems "off" right now He has a great arm but he's not slinging it around like Petty is....He just looks tight right now and playing scared almost I still believe in his talent but if he really is one of those pressure guys, he may never be anything more than a backup despite the physical tools He also could be one of those guys that bounces around and finally matures and plays well, who knows Point is he needs to change his ways real quick or he may be somewhere else real soon....Might be a good thing for Geno really
If I were Bowles, I would play Fitz 3 quarters next week and let Hack take the 4th. Then Week 4 would feature Geno and Petty each for one half. If Geno outplays Petty, I keep 4 QBs. If Petty outplays Geno, Geno's gone.
I would normally agree with this...but after Sanchize and Pennington preseasons...nope. 2q + 1Drive (maybe 2) for Fitz Petty then Geno Final game Petty Geno 1q each then the Hack Attack crack smack!
The Jets would save over $1 million against the cap if they cut Geno according to overthecap.com. http://overthecap.com/player/geno-smith/2249/ He should start packing his shit because he's a goner.
I'm always amazed by the number of quotes like this. His only chance to play is in pre-season. If he can't show you he has improved now, he never can. Pre-season is not the regular season but its simply absurd to stick your head in the sand and act like the play on the field doesn't mean anything. Its an evaluation period - and it matters.
You're right I foreshadowed the Washington game. Your boy will be robbing hubcaps in West Virginia / Florida next week.
Geno is regressing from being below average to awful, I thought it would be a good idea to have 4 QBs for security but Geno is making himself look really bad. I give it one more preseason game, but I doubt anything will change. Time to get rid of Catpiss Smith
Fitz played like he should be on the bench too last night. Perhaps some credit belongs to Washington? Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
I know a woods next to the Deleware River that would be perfect for him.Split the cab fee?He will love it there
The thing is, how may awesome Brooks Bollinger moments has the pre-season had, to have them only turn out to be false alarms? I remember the year we went 5-0 in pre-season and 4-12 in the regular season (1992). Browning Nagle was great that year in the pre-season, and was still not an NFL quarterback. That being said, I should have re-phrased that, which is my bad. My point was that the preseason results often don't matter because it is too easy to take them out of context and assume that performance playing with the 2s/3s against someone else's 2s/3s means something about how that same guy with play with the 1s against someone else's 1s, when it rarely does. All I'm looking for in pre-season is that the guys look competent, confident, and physically ready to play in the NFL. Does he know the playbook, is he hitting guys when they're open, or throwing behind them, etc. The scores, the individual stats, etc. are largely meaningless. You can say the two are related, but Fitz's pre-season last year was unremarkable (limited action, 3 games, only played well or long in 1 of them), his regular season was great (or, 15 games of it, anyway). If player X is playing well or not is interesting. What their numbers were, etc. is not. When I said I didn't care about the pre-season, that was the part I was talking about. Again, my bad on the phrasing. So, there's a lot more downside that worries me in pre-season (Geno last night) than there is upside I believe in (Petty) just based off of these few, somewhat synthetic performances. You're playing against base defenses, you're playing with people who are new and/or don't always play together a lot, you've go coaches trying out personnel today they are going to cut tomorrow....there are just too many variables to read into that often turn out to be ghosts.
