The other night I was "thinking" (stoned) that Hack needs 2 years to come into his own i.e. 2018 season. And Brady is heading towards a slowdown and will certainly be on the downslope for the 2018 season...

I'm just saying, I can't wait till the rest of the league hates us and Hack as much as they do the pats and Brady.

    In Mac I trust

The key to this potentially happy scenario is keeping Hackenberg on the bench until he's ready to go. Not looking good compared to the other options but actually good to go against live NFL competition. If somebody is stuck out there sucking next year the last person you want it to be is Hackenberg if you have any plans for him to be the guy of the future.

I'd rebuild the offensive line over the next two years and draft a WR up high somewhere and then let Hackenberg play with the new toys. That's the most likely path to him not being another failed QB.

We know how to flunk a decent QB prospect already and Hackenberg has more questions coming out of college than the last 3 guys (Clemens, Sanchez and Geno).

We haven't screwed up Petty yet.

    Give us a chance.

Petty is not in the same class as the other guys in the conversation. We spent a 4th round pick on him and the expectation is that he's going to be a backup QB in the NFL. It's up to him to change that expectation or on everybody else in front of him to fail and force the Jets to give him a chance anyway.

The irrational love for Petty on this board is due to the fact that the Jets do not have a QB. If the Jets had a QB in place nobody would be talking about Petty as anything but a backup on the depth chart.

Starting QB's appear in the top 36 picks in the draft or materialize out of thin-air when all else fails. Russell Wilson is the obvious exception to the rule, since he started as a rookie, but it's clear that he was a good QB stuck in a 5'11" body. He was the Steve Smith/Wayne Chrebet exception of a guy who outplays his physical limitations by a lot.

This whole board is full of Geno haters....but if Fitz signs for the minimum wage....they will turn on him too..when the team is 0-5, that's the funny part..

That's just plain stupid!!! Teams do not draft backups QBs!!! You can get those of the street for peanuts...show me a Gm that drafts backups and I'll show you an unemployed GM.

Don't listen, Brad is a QB hater.

Thinks Teddy sucks and Carr is a career journeyman.

He thought we got fleeced by trading up one spot to steal Petty from the Dolphins.

Every team drafts backup QB's. By definition this includes any QB drafted after the 36th pick, or 4th pick of the 2nd round, whichever is earlier.

The proof in the statement can be deduced by how many QB's drafted after pick 36 go on to be starting QB's and how many don't. Further, good backup QB's aren't cheap. Good backup QB's on their second contract make more than starters at most other positions and about 4x more than backups at most positions.

teams draft backup QBs all the time. Scouting departments will put a projection, long term, on a QB and if its a backup that doesn't have any impetus for or against the pick, depending on the round. 4th round and below, that's where backup QBs are drafted.

Its very possible they selected Petty with the belief that he is a long-term developmental QB, possibly as a backup, gravy if he turns into a starter. After a year of seeing him everyday in practice they very easily could've determined that being a consistent starter isn't likely in the cards for him long term and that's why they took Hackenberg- who knows. But there is nothing wrong with that. Homegrown backup QBs are very valuable in this league

This made me laugh. It's not your fault for not knowing this because not everyone checks the board religiously during the offseason, but this video was posted independently so many times in the Hackenberg draft thread that people started to repost it as a joke. Still a good video, thanks for sharing it before he makes his debut (presumably) tonight, it was a good refresher.

By the way, does anyone have the link to the Gruden camp with Hackenberg?

He's definitely a "brain" at the QB position. Great understanding of the X's & O's aspects of the game. Very high football I.Q. Able to absorb lots in terms of mental preparation. Experience within a pro style offense and also has the ability to read defenses.

I absolutely love the fact that Bill O'Brien got his hands on Hackenberg during his Freshman season while with Penn State. At the age of only 18 was running and comprehending N.E's offensive philosophy (which is very complex). Looks a lot like Tom Brady at the L.O.S in terms of alerts & pre-snap adjustments.

Smart, smart kid. Really anxious to see the kid rookie take the field @ Washington tonight.

I'm interested to watch Hack tonight against his "hometown" team. I personally don't see it in him but for the team's sake, I hope he pans out.
