In 2014, Geno Smith had an INT% of 3.5. In 2015, Ryan Fitzpatrick had an INT% of 2.7 In 2014, Geno Smith was sacked 28 times, a sack% of 7.1 In 2015, Ryan Fitzpatrick was sacked 19 times, a sack% of 3.3. In 2014, Geno Smith fumbled 8 times. In 2015, Ryan Fitzpatrick fumbled the ball 5 times (in more pass attempts) More goes into stats than sheer volume. When accounting for them as a percentage of snaps taken, Fitz is significantly better.
Fitz had easier competition, a better coaching staff, and a WR seriously playing at close to an MVP level as well. I don't think comparing stats between the two guys in different situations tells us much of anything though. Especially since they shouldn't be directly compared because one is going to cost a lot more than the other $$$. Makes more sense to compare Ryan Fitzpatrick to Ryan Fitzpatrick. He's got 11 years on his resume and they all tell the same story: A guy who is an average to below average starter outside of a few stretches and has difficulties delivering physically. That guy is asking for $12+ million.
Fixed. Quarterbacks don't win games, teams win games. Drew Brees is one of the best quarterbacks of all time, the only guy to pass for over 5,000 yards twice. "He" has gone 7-9 in 3 of the last 4 seasons. "Top 5" QB Philip Rivers engineered an impressive 4-12 season for the Chargers this year. 2 time Super Bowl MVP, future HOF Eli Manning hasn't had a winning season since 2012. Andrew Luck and Joe Flacco's teams both had losing records before their injuries last year. Because their teams all sucked. Meanwhile, perennial average Alex Smith won 11 games, the Texans won their division despite starting Brian Hoyer, TJ Yates, Ryan Mallet and Brandon Weeden in games. Andy Dalton has won 10+ games 4 years in a row. Ryan Fitzpatrick went from a .375 career winning percentage (average of 6 wins per year) to 10-6. Because their rosters were all really good. The perfect counterpoint is the fact that the Broncos just won the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning was 34th out of 35th qualified QBs in passer rating and he trailed the NFL interception leader by 1 despite missing 7 games. They won the Super Bowl because of an all time great defense and good playmakers on offense. Football is the ultimate team game, with offense, defense and special teams working as one to score points. The "quarterback is the only important position" is a media-driven narrative that I can't stand. QB wins is a stupid argument that needs to die a painful death.
C'mon guy, you're better than this. Look at the difference in the rosters, in the coaching staffs and FOs. There's a world of difference. I'm also not sure about the teams the Jets played in 2014, but they had a very easy schedule last year. You can't even compare the two. "Cool story" is a stupid, moronic expression. Please let it die. It's contaminated this board long enough.
Yes, more goes into stats than sheer volume. So you are beaten by your own words. There's no comparing the Jets' roster, coaching staffs or FOs of 2014 and 2015. That has to be taken into consideration when looking at the stats. Besides. even without that, the only stat where Fitz is "significantly" better is in sack %.
I'm not denying who had a better situation at all. But if I see a post stating that Geno Smith in 2014 was less turnover prone than Fitzpatrick in 2015, I am certainly going to bring the facts to everyone's attention. Fitzpatrick was better in 2015 than Geno was in 2014 in virtually every metric available. In a vacuum, Fitzpatrick is a better player. However, you are correct, in a salary capped league, once money is brought into play everything gets a bit cloudier.
The point is all the NY Media talk about how bringing in a young late round pick as your QB1 would be foolish is currently being dis-proven by the Broncos. Maybe the Jets are not increasing Fitz' offer because they feel OK with Petty or even Hack if/when Gino craps the bed. Noone has seen Petty take a snap since last pre-season. He could be further along than we think.
Great post. The only problem is that the haters aren't listening. Their small minds are already made up and locked tight. They think Geno sucks. He could start and throw 40 TDs this year and only 5 interceptions and lead the Jets deep into the playoffs, and they'd find a way to try to justify that he still sucked and shouldn't be re-signed. One can't educate or open an ignorant mind that doesn't want to be opened or learn.
I was responding to a post that virtually said, Geno in 2014 was less turnover prone than Fitz in 2015. That was not the case, at all. Fitz had a better situation for sure, I never denied that, so I'm not sure why you brought it up. There was a post that stated that Geno was less turnover prone than Fitz, I presented facts to show that is not neccessarily the case. And arguing over "significant" is semantics. I consider 2.7 and 3.5 to be fairly significant. But that doesnt really matter.
I hope you're right about both Hack and Petty. To me the thing is that I actually moderately confident that this FO will do at least OK job with QBs. So if they are not too worried about signing Fitz, I won't loose my head over this either.
fitz is 0-9 vs rex as a starter, here are his numbers ... 143/280 (51%) for 1627 yards (5.81 YPA) with 14 TDs and 11 INTs ... that equals a passer rating of 69.15 starting this dude in 2016 pretty much means that the jets already have two losses in the division
Blatant statement like "We already know he sucks, now and forever" are irritating, but I doubt they will continue if Geno will post 40/5 + PO.
Thanks for that. I've been meaning to look that up as I figured it would read something like that. Rex always had his number when he was here. It's not a trend I'm looking forward to seeing continuing.
I'M delusional? We kick the starting QB for the defending SB Champs off our team so we can spend the next 4 yrs running his replacement out of town. Yup. I'M delusional.
Where are all these younger vets with more upside than Fitz (for the next 1-3 yrs)???? Did I miss something? If that were even remotely true, one of these younger vets with more upside than Fitz would have been in camp 6 months ago.

Last week Brandon Marshall was alarmed when he said the free agent bearded quarterback stopped responding to his texts, but on Monday night the receiver posted an Instagram photo of him and Fitzpatrick (along with two of Fitzpatrick’s children) in Chicago. “My boy and his boys stopped in #chicago to say hello,” Marshall wrote. Fitzpatrick may be Marshall’s “boy,” but at the moment, Geno Smith is his quarterback. That’s because, despite the wishes of many of the players, the team has yet to work out a deal to re-sign Fitzpatrick after months of negotiation have yielded no results. Jets have given Fitzpatrick multiple contract offers to pick from The Jets offered Fitzpatrick a three-year, $24 million contract with $15 million in guarantees, but the Daily News reported earlier Monday that the team actually has made multiple offers to the veteran quarterback. The entire situation could come to a head soon as Jets players report to training camp at the team’s Florham Park facility on Wednesday, with practice starting on Thursday. Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a 10-win season last year but failed to earn the final victory needed for a playoff berth. He threw a franchise record 31 touchdown passes in the 10-6 campaign.
As much as I loved watching Fitzpatrick this past year, I am about done with this standoff. I want whoever is going to be the starting QB to be here for training camp. Like I said yesterday, I am trusting the coaching staff on this one. If they are comfortable with Geno, so am I. I'd prefer Fitz, but if the staff thinks he isnt worth as much as he is asking, I'm ready to roll with Geno.
