I like Foles and he's my favorite of the "available" quarterbacks. However, he's not a great fit for the Jets or Gailey. We don't have a deep threat, unless Smith shows something, and Foles isn't too great with the quick release dink n' dunk stuff that Fitz was adept at.
Rank our last 5 QB situations entering training camp based on ridiculousness. Here's mine: 1). 2013: Geno/Sanchez. Rex turns sideways at a press conference after a preseason game when reporters keep asking him about naming a starter. He then puts Sanchez into the 4th quarter of a preseason game where he suffers a season ending injury behind the 3rd string line, forcing Geno into action when he clearly wasn't ready. Rex defended his actions by saying he wanted to win the Snoopy Trophy. 2). 2015: Fitz/Geno. Chan Gailey proclaims that "barring injury", Geno was the week 1 starter. Bowles was clearly not on the same page, never acknowledging this publicly and always saying that it was an open competition. Geno then gets punched in the face by a teammate over a $600 debt to a 3rd string linebacker making Fitz the season long starter. 3). 2012: Sanchez/Tebow. Media circus all throughout training camp. Neither led a touchdown drive in the preseason. Tebow ran shirtless in the rain in front of reporters. Wildcat, lots of Wildcat (but no reporting formations during practice!!!). McElroy entered this conversation later in the regular season. 4). 2016: Geno/Fitz looming. One of the weirdest contract standoffs I can remember. Bowles and Maccagnan repeatedly say in public that Fitz is the starter, even though he isn't under contract. They then go 5 months playing a game of chicken that looks like it'll go unresolved into training camp. 5). 2014: Geno/Vick. The year of the "open competition". Rex refused to acknowledge a "starting quarterback" even into the regular season. He only named Geno the starter on a week to week basis. Ah, memories. Ridiculous that this has happened 5 years in a row. I'd love to know our starting quarterback going into August just once, but you know we're in store for another one of these with Hackenberg waiting in the wings next year.
At this point I'm starting to think that's what's happening, that's the only 'plan' that even makes a modicum of sense considering he's turning down $24 million here for zero elsewhere. I thought all along this was just Fitz dragging his feet and signing just before camp so he didn't have to go through two-a-days and minicamp but either way you would think they would want to end the charade circus one way or another before camp. Not to compare the two players but rather the situations, Emmitt Smith held out early into the season after the Cowboys won the SB. They went 0-2 without him and suddenly he finally got what he wanted.
Except there are no 2 a days anymore. Theres like 2 hours of practice and some classroom and workout time. And if he is trying to skip training camp what kind of leader is that?
Really is amazing....It would be crazy to have 5 normal QB competitions in a row but the Jets found a way to go above and beyond that, somehow. Some of the weirdest situations you couldn't even think of and it just keeps happening Simply unreal
The Jets suck at handling the position. That's what makes Fitz valuable. He doesn't need a babysitter.
When you lay it out like that (and it goes beyond the last 5 years) the Jets look like the Cleveland Browns.
Yeah, and considering those recent photos of him, he could use the work. I posed a similar theory earlier as well but it really seems illogical.
The Jets should just rescind the offer and then see what happens. He isn't going anywhere else except as a backup, when he decides he want to play offer him 7-8M at most to come back.
At this point I really font care if Fitz signs or not as I do not have high expectations for this season. We do not have an answer at qb,and I don't want to pay Fitz a big sum that only will hurt us in future years cap wise. At this point I would make Fitz and his agent aware that everyday he remains unsigned the offer and incentives get reduced! With our schedule and a qb with arm strength limitations ( Fitz ) we are not going far into the playoffs if at all,,,do not over pay Fitz ,some of us really like the guy but his chance at a big payday went out the window in Buffalo last year .
here is the difference: taking a clue from panther's gm gettlemen, i pull the offer to fitz off the table right now, and say goodbye. paying insane money to a hold-the-fort guy makes no sense. 10 wins , no playoffs, last year was his upside. think long term for once.
